vbf3
LI and Huntington rocks! Without a doubt one of those shows when you knew from the first bars of the opening song the band was on and the music was gonna be great. The Sugaree was unbelievable, as was Lazy Lightening/Supplication. The Scarlet/Fire was also great, and from the way Mattson played you could tell he had had some carbs for extra energy during the set break. Sorry I cannot be there tonite!! Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted January 1, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 1, 2013 Glad the forums are working again, I love how during the exciting times we are all trying so hard to see what's happening the lines cross and we get nothing then it always comes back just as we enter desperation. I have been watching videos (thanks Steve and others) of shows gone by and dancing in the basement. Also flipping through his old DSO fan fliers and photos. Even found an article from his high school student paper from 2000 about the kids touring DSO "these days" and it makes me super grateful for all of you who have kept the faith in this world of trouble. The shows this run look delicious in every way! My heart is w each and every one of you tonight and I know 2013 will be a year of magic manifesting in all our lives because anything watered with that much love will be a paradise indeed..... No more waiting
Forum MVP Mango Posted January 2, 2013 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 2, 2013 I need to hear this sugaree again because to my ears it blew away the one w/ Chimenti. Second set here was one of the best I've ever seen, and there has been a lot of good ones this year but this one was just a notch above the rest. Samson>Estimated was absolutely blistering and I thought to myself that if they went into Eyes that the whole building might spontaneously combust...fortunately it didn't and instead we were treated to one of the most triumphant He's Gone's I've ever witnessed. A lot of times I think of this song as a downer, especially out of Estimated, but after this one I'll never feel this way again. For the first time I saw He's Gone as a true second set Jam. Truckin was hot. Not my favorite song by any means but they slammed this one, hitting every corner and crevice...just exactly Perfect. A brief drums led us smoothly into a powerful Terrapin Station. Around and Around brought us back to earth and man that place was reeling and a rockin!! Wow.

Cosmic Mike
No thanks to my napping tendencies, I fell asleep in the hotel and woke up at 8. Sadly didn't make it into the show until Brown Eyed Women, but what I did hear was great. I've come to notice DSO really likes playing 76 and 77 shows, or maybe that is just coincidentally what I seem to witness most often, but there is nothing wrong with that because 76 and 77 are awesome years. I thought they really nailed the Lazy Lightning>Supplication. The Sugaree was really good, and I mean realllllly good! Jeff and Rob both did an incredible job soloing during the song. The Music Never Stopped was great, and every time I've heard DSO play it, the song has been excellent, although this is one song that I haven't heard a DSO version that comes close to some of the Dead's best versions (e.g. Dick's Picks 18). If anyone knows of any really killer The Music Never Stopped, I'd love to check them out. Second set straight through was excellent. The whole band was playing excellent through and through and Jeff did a phenomenal job on that Fire. Can't say I have any particular favorites from the show. I thought everything I heard was played very well overall, no complaints.
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted January 11, 2013 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 11, 2013 This was just another stellar show. I really don't remember a 4 show stretch of shows played at such a high level maybe ever in my tenure seeing DSO. Maybe the 3 Jubilee shows with the last one I saw before those shows. Yes, I am sucker for 77 set lists. I love creative electives with some rarities. I can't get enough Lisa and 4 straight nights of Lisa felt like a blessing. She really brings it all together wit her dancing energy and vocal power, which can simply be overwhelming at times. I loved this venue. I was a little unsure of this whole NYC/LI new years excursion. I hate the price of food and drinks in and around NYC. Out of my group of friends, I was one of a few that visited the Paramount for DSO's first visit back in May, I believe. Despite great sound, I had a run in with a fan or two that I found less than desirable. I distinctly remember being called bad energy after I politely asked a young lady to quiet down. I retreated and she proceeded to get louder to prove a point. Maybe I was wrong to say something, but I feel she could have handled the situation with a little bit more class. I also must understand that maybe it wasn't me and we are all entitled to bad days. That being said, I strongly believe that if she would have shut up and listened to the music she could have released any negative energies more positively. I also couldn't dance on the floor and had to retreat all the way up to the top balcony. That is where this little altercation occurred. Despite my doubts, the venue pleasantly surprised me. On this night, my only complaint would be the long will call line getting in which caused me to miss a good part of the first song, which alerted me that I needed to arrive earlier the next night. Due to the previous experience, I ran straight up to the balcony and the stop I had previously found. I also let some friends know where I would be. Fortunately for CosmicMike, I feel he made it into the show right as the first set truly started to take off. The Cassidy and Dire Wolf were both very strong and the LLR pulled at the heartstrings as that song always does, but the energy really picked up with the Brown-eyed women and stayed high through the end with a smoking Music. Never stop never stop. In the meantime, we were treated to a blissful and wonderful sugaree. Not always my favorite tune but tonight the energy was high and the tune was very very danceable. I may be in the minority but I love lazy lightning supplication. I can't get enough of it. Would you come closer if I asked you to? I stayed and danced with a great group of friends for most of the show in the balcony spot in the rafters I found in May. This would be home base for both nights shows. It must be noted that the sound is fantastic in this place. Absolutely beautiful venue and since we took over that balcony space, I didn't have any unwanted interactions with any other show goers. Set break proved to shed light on just how much fun the Paramount was cool with this new yrs. I already knew you could enjoy yourself outside, but on this night, they would let us enjoy ourselves inside as well. This was a sigh of relief and a pleasant surprise for a venue in the Northeast. They provided a great place for us to dance and laugh in a safe environment. I want to thank the venue security of the Paramount, including the prick from the next night. He gave us a hard time, but he wasn't good enough at his job to stop me from doing what I wanted to do; thus, no hard feelings. Can't believe he threw away some fun, but come on guys, this was a venue in the Northeast. We should've been ejected for the way they let us behave. Samson openers are always very powerful for me. It helps me release frustration with the call that "I would tear this whole building down." I love scarlett-fire. Scarlett with the playful word play around the pick up or the rejection is fantastic. Who doesn't love to think of "picking up the matches" and "closing the door." Just a fantastic Garcia tune, very danceable and romantic while at the same time playful and a just a bit overconfident. However, the real treat is always the fire. This band has been killing fire with JM. One of the first, wow moment for me and DSO w JM happened in Huntingdon, WV during fire. They absolutely blew me away that may still be the greatest fire I have ever experience, but tonight's was up there. Very very strong. Fire like Samson helps me release frustration and better persevere through life's struggles. The alarming cry of "there's a fire, there's a fire on the mountain," to me means so much more than a natural disaster. It alarms my senses to any of my own personal struggles and to any possible social or political struggles of the world. Who knows if this was intended, but it is what happens. I love dancing to fire. Estimated was good, but He's Gone was fantastic. Absolutely moving stuff with great contributions musically from all members of the band. Tremendous music. The Terrapin Station was the culmination of a fantastic show. It is my lady's favorite song and one of my favorites as I am sure it is a favorite of many around here. I consider the next two songs to be danceable throwaways. Nothing special, but definitely worth a good twirl and a smile. This night, even more so than the next night, would be the after party for me. So many great friends showed up to hang out in RM 240. We laughed, shared stories, and even thanks to Greyhead got to watch some of the previous nights show. For many of us dancers, it was the first time, despite attending the show in Philly, we got to see the JM windmill. The hotel, like the venue, allowed us to enjoy ourselves. Thank you Looky for finding us a hotel that would not only give us a group rate, but also let us have fun. I am so glad I got to see and spend time with so many of you. New Years can be really great for all the friends and family that make it out to show. Just a special time. Good friends with great music always equals a great time. A special thanks to DSO band and crew and the music of the GD for bringing us together. I feel truly blessed to be apart of this community.
