Love the Opera House! Old wooden structure inside and out on the town center green. 50 steps to 2 eateries with easy access bars during set break. Great sound, visibility, and dancing space at the back where I was parked all night. Also, I thought closure with JK was over years ago - I wouldn't trade Jeff for anything or anyone. But the last time I was in this venue was the last time I saw JK with DSO and I felt it a bit. I was surprised by that.

Another grrrrrreat show. The only thing I see missing from the setlist is 3 second "Another Manic Monday" to open the show. lol

was it the fender or the stage piano? haven't seen the fender in a while...

The "stage piano" is a Yamaha GS-1... I think only a few hundred or so were made, so parts are EXTREMELY hard to come by... that thing is AWESOME, but needs ALOT of work... the GS-1 was only in use by The Grateful Dead during the 82-84 (or 85?) years... I believe DSO used to have Brent's backup GS-1, but was traded for another one that was supposedly in better working condition, yet unfortunatly, it was not... The GS-1 was not made for road use, so the many years of being hauled around the country back and forth dozens of times has rattled some of the guts loose... there is a GS-2 that WAS made for road use, but I think they are rarer then the GS-1...

I LOVE the sound of those GS-1's... I hope one day, they can get one that's in top working condition...

Barraco... you want to shed some light and some history on the GS-1 for us?

first off, it was Brents Fender Rhodes that was on stage with at this show.

Second, GS1 we used to have was Brents, as well. It shit the bed so we got another one thanks to Web Ed!!! Brent used it from 83-86

The one we have is in top working condition:-)

The drive up there was rather easy despite being on a two lane road. Drive back was a little too foggy for my liking but I would definitely go back to the LOH.

Being an opera house, i was expecting an "assigned seat" but it was GA (pick your own seat and ramble throughout the place.) Staff was also very nice and friendly, some even dancing! Re-entry was allowed at any time during the show. Sound was okay at the venue.

I rode the rail for the first set. GSET was a good, solid opener. Didn't go into the extended jam but the band seemed real loose and excited for barraco's last show. Althea was marvelous. I gotta say, when Jeff first joined the band, i thought this was one of his weaker songs vocally, but he absolutely nails this song (and every song) now. Jeff had some really blissed out solos that peaked and came right back down at the perfect moments. I thought I would never say this but... El Paso was actually pretty good. No vocal flubs, tightly played by the band, Jeff did his noodling thing but in the end it remains a complete afterthought. You ain't woman enough sported a strong performance by Lisa along with a nice honky tonk style solo from Barraco. Lisa of course received a rousing applause. Candyman was strong, Jeff hitthose little jerry filler riffs just right. Easy to love you was strong and the crowd showed a lot of support for Barraco. I will also add that Kevin was doing a lot of smiling and mouthing the words to himself during it. Sounds like a guilty pleasure to me. Race is on was rowdy and raucous. Then the show really took off at Cats. From that point on, i had a chesire grin plastered on my face. I thought someone had thrown gasoline on the stage and set the band on fire. That song was smokin' good. Masterpiece provided us with a nice sing-a-long and the after midnight kept the energy flowing. Mattson just kept taking it higher and higher and the band followed suit. Really left the entire crowd so pumped for the second set.

I spent the second set in the balcony. I love a good sugar>scarlet. I've seen this one a few times and DSO crushes that transition. It's just so fluid. it melds together perfectly. Lisa did some light scatting on Scarlet, which was a lot of fun. The band seemed to be really getting in the groove and communicating well. Next came an ethereal wheel that lead it's way to the centerpiece of the show. I really liked the flow of the second set. Other one was long and juicy (no sexual connotations please). Other one is such a poly-rhythmic song. It just has layers upon layers of different rhythms. This was song was the perfect example of how to navigate a jam and communicate musically. Some of the rhythms were syncopated and gave it a little bit of a jazzy feel. Kevin of course laid down the fat bass line and the drummers kept everyone dancing. But this song just kept going and going and Eaton and Jeff had some great interplay. It seemed like they both really wanted to push each other and see how far they could take it.The drums/space segment was solid (i think these guys have been doing this long enough to know what they're doing at this point in the show.) There was a nice jam back into TOO that picked up right where they left off. In fact, Jeff was doing seem deep plugging going back into TOO and they built right back into that rhythmic frenzy. Cryptical was wild, very strong as usual. The place exploded upond Jeff's delivery of THE line. Cosmic charlie is a great tune i wish we got to hear more often. Great harmonies by the band. GDTRFB nearly blew the roof off the place. The whole band was firing on all cylinders and the whole place just became one big dance machine. If a recording of this ever pops up, do yourself a favor and listen to it. Sunshine daydream was an obvious but strong closer. I am a sucker for a good sandwich like that anyway.

World to give was exactly what i needed. On the drive up I kept thinking about that song, which is one of my favorites and i was a little bummed when we didn't get that one big post-space ballad but i was absolutely blown away when the started playing it after the set closer. I don't think most of the people really understood what we were watching and hearing but i absolutely loved it. The whole band killed it and Jeff knows every little nuance of that solo and really knows how to stretch out that peak. really, really great stuff. And of course one last vocal chance for barraco to shine before he departs for the west coast. Loved it. And a very jerry christmas to you too Mr. Barraco.
