redeyedbert
Yep. Special night. I'm having troubles gathering my thoughts. I was kind of hoping when they walked off after tangled up in blue that they wouldn't play an encore. They had already given so much. Oh, and Kevin seemed extra animated last night. Kevin made me smile. We were stuffed in there, and the night was not without incident but the crowd was rowdy in a good way. The crowd was engaged. Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted November 17, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted November 17, 2012 Wow. Lisa had me at a stand still during chimes. Bert couldn't be more right about kevin appearing animated and engaged. The whole band seemed to be really enjoying themselves. I will give full review when at a computer but def well worth the trek to buffalo. Always feels like a special move for me as head. Could be bc of the official release of truckin up to buffalo. Maybe i am given to cliche but buffalo will always be special. I have my reasons. Im sure some can guess the strongest ones. This band really seems to get better and better. I think that was the original attraction for me to dso in 2004. I have rarely if ever saw a show i didn't feel was quality with growth in the musical conversation of kindred spirits. The connection from stage to crowd and on stage felt amongst people at a dso show and i have a feeling some older heads wld say this about dead shows; fills my heart w so much joy and emotion that i almost burst. Im gonna stop now. Feel i am rambling and i can't really collect my thoughts to truly share my experience. Hope it comes to me. I AM SO GRATEFUL!!!! TerrapinJen
The dead nor dso had never played the bird song>let it grow>bird song sandwich. A first for those in attendance and it was pretty sweet. the first set was magical and seemed to go on forever. I couldnt believe I had a whole other set left to dance to! there was a magic energy in the room that night and the band played like they were possessed by the spirit of the grateful dead. I really love the electives.. I feel they take more risks and get really out there in their jams and feel wild and free enough to do and go wherever they want. the raw power that came from Lisa for chimes of freedom was inspirational and I can feel her voice in my body and spirit. how does she do it!!! Hands down best chimes I've ever heard. the terrapin was great and had some really cool jams tucked in there. drums and space was super spacey alien liftoff space sounds with a touch of African tribal. crowd loved it I think the hey Jude was played to perfection and had the perfect blend of quiet soulful moments and loud crescendos of in your face joy. tangled was a real dancer and I agree bert.. the tangled would have been a great place to end. there was so much energy and musical power filling up that crowded room and I think that box of rain kinda fizzled out and didnt match the level of playing they had achieved all evening. just my opinion. but by far my favorite show of buffalo. the band was on fire and seemed to be greedy to soak up the energy the crowd was throwing their way. also... um hello KEVIN!!! I've never heard so many Kevin bombs in my life!!! Kevin did you eat your wheaties that morning!?!! it was an inspiration to see him so into the tune and bouncing around the stage. also also.. nick has been testing out new equipment to record and stream the show live to folks that couldn't be there. Its called nickstage and the ill try to get the link up here. its a work in progress and testing stages but it was cool to go home after the show and listen to some of the show again. I'm sure we will hear more info from band and crew later but I'm really excited about the prospect! ok enough rambling for now

Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted December 3, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted December 3, 2012 I have had time to collect my thoughts and flush out my thoughts and feelings about the shows I caught during a short run for me back on the East Coast. I caught both nights buffalo, northampton, burlington, and penns peak. All of those show had their highlights and in some cases, some drawbacks, but the overall experience was top-notch as a DSO experience always seems to be. I am glad I was able to get back East for some pre-Thanksgiving DSO fun. This was my favorite show of the run. I hadn't slept a lick since the Phil and Friends (I got a sweet poster for my attendance; DSO needs more posters; I love em) show I caught the night before and for those that know, this can put you in a very unique head space. The show opened strong with two songs that both serve as solid openers to any show. The show felt like an elective from the start, but the highlight of the set and the clincher that we were indeed witnessing an elective had to be the chimes of freedom. I don't care that you could have stated as soon as Lisa took stage after Stranger was played it had to be an elective. That would be true but for the less educated, chimes should have sealed it. Chimes was by far the first set highlight for me. DSO has only performed this a hand full of times with the first appearance in Birmingham, AL. I have been fortunate enough to catch a few and this was by far the strongest version. Lisa had the place at a standstill. With the energy peaking during Chimes, the band carried that energy into a frenzied Let it Grow into a very subdued and moving Bird song back into the frenzy of light it grow. Jen and I learned later that this was the very first time DSO or the Dead had done that transition. Powerful stuff. I have to say that Buffalo gets crowded. Lots of good young and older heads and a few misplaced party animals can create a very hot and stuffy scene. It was great to meet a new member to these boards cosmicmike. I saw him several times on this run and I am sure our paths will cross again. The 2nd set was great. China Rider got the energy pumped right back up. I've noticed people, myself included, really get worked up during the transition from china into rider. Tonight was no different. The band was proclaiming and the crowd was agreeing and strengthening the notion that we would indeed miss you when your done. Truckin seemed a little predictable being buffalo and all, but what the hell, I did truck it up to Buffalo and I am proud to have done it a few times. Great heads in the Buffalo area. Not my favorite tune but it sure kept us moving. The 2nd set segment of hey jude thru tangled was some incredible stuff. Maybe the best hey jude I've heard barroco do and the Standing on the Moon and Uncle Johns - repeats from the Phil show the night before - affirmed my decision to leave nyc and head up to buffalo to see my favorite band. I enjoyed the songs both nights but for those that appreciate the debate and want comparisons; I will continue to assert that for me, there isn't really a comparison; DSO all the way. The Box closer always touches my heart. Knowing the origins of the song, it always make me think of my father and although tough at times, I find it healthy and positive to remember and remind myself just how much that man meant to me. The greatest man I will ever know. Despite having limited dance space - I would do a lot better the next night - I managed to hold down some space upfront by Baracco for most of the night. It was a great party and the music moved me - maybe more so than on other nights. Def seemed to have the most impact on my emotions out of all the shows played. Emotions can be confusing, but their great to feel and work your way through. This night epitomized the GD/DSO experience for me. An emotional rollercoaster of a night then ends with tears, laughs, and memories to last a life time. It just doesn't get any better than that. Proofreading to come later. redeyedbert
I was just thinking back on this show. What a show. So many powerful moments of music this night. I've never had a bad DSO show. Any review I write about DSO is always favorable. There are "those nights" though. Special nights and this was one of them. Here were some of my highlights. Half Step/Feel Like a Stranger to open. High energy, amazing solos, and Lisa so we knew this is an original setlist. Unbroken chain confirmed this and we were off with a bang. I wasn't familiar with chimes of freedom. I knew it was a Dylan song and Lisa had sung it. So, it starts and it's good. Im bummed for my wife who loves Lisa and doesn't know the song. Again at this point, I like the song but I'm figuring I will probably need to learn it so I'm more familiar for next time. 2nd to last verse starts, to a song I don't know or care about……. yet. And then Lisa just went off. Didn't care to huge fan somewhere in the 2nd to last verse. Bird Song- Let it Grow- Bird Song- The bird song was in a 71,72 style. I like that about original set lists. Some originals seem to be in a specific year style. This original setlist was all over the map in its sound. I can't really remember exactly where they cut the bird song, but I knew instantly when I heard Let it Grow what they were up to. I thought I was such a genius but in hindsight it makes sense they were gonna finish bird song. 2nd set The heart of this amazing show to me was Hey Jude>Uncle Johns>Standing on the Moon>Tangled up in Blue to finish out the set. Hey Jude was beautiful. 90s style. Then early 70s style Uncle Johns Band!!!! It was just exactly perfect. Standing on the Moon!?!?!? Its almost to much. Powerful version. Sung perfectly by Jeff. Style of Tangled up in Blue? I don't know. Its probably from some early 80's show and Jerry is coked out of his mind cause thats how they played it. Super Fast. Jeff went off. Again high energy. Band and Crowd. I had said earlier that I thought they should have turned the lights on after Tangled Up in Blue but thats cause I was just spent. I felt they had given so much, and the crowd seemed to give it back, that it would have been cool to just end it right there. They didn't and it was a great version of Box of Rain to send us on our way. Oh yea. Lets not forget that during all this amazing playing and singing and dancing, Kevin was a beast throughout the night.
