while i may have seen them in passing at gratefulfest, it wasn't until i moved to CA around this time last year that I really saw them. from my first run last year i was HOOKED. it wasn't just the spinning older dude that whispered "this is the real furthur" in the midsts of a monstrous second set jam or the space instantly cleared and held for dancers OR the fact they TAUGHT ME TO SPIN....... it was ALL of it and it saved my soul when DSO was far away and I was lonesome and a long way from......

but I was taken HOME last night!

now i can not only take setlist mostly accurately but I anticipate the songs coming! someone said "teenage wedding" and i was soooo happy i was down in front, not in the booth (Winky, you are awesome for working through this maddening joy every night, that is HARD!) but knew i only had a few songs before i had to go back and be responsible. i KNEW they would play free mexican air force and when mookie whipped out his accordion i was elated and it was on and i aeroplaned my little self all over right back up to shakedown to watch the birdseye view for the rest of the set.

from this vantage point on the third level i could see the band and everyone enjoying them. seasons was so magical (the WRS fill in)..... which brings me to the point of mentioning how cool grateful dead "cousin" music is.... same journey, diff songs! fuck yes!

oh babe it ain't no lie proved that they were now playing songs as i desired or thought of them and I melted into a new heaven but it was the LAZY RIVER ROAD sang by pete that REALLY got me for the WHOLE night (until mission).... living here on river road along the lazy russian river and hearing that tender reminded about the uselessness of careless love melted my face right outta my unicorn hat (this is the only other band I wear it for!)

Wizards son always gets everyone at DNB going and the close out with rag mama rag was super fun.

this was one of my favorite second sets i have EVER seen. starting with any naked eye, which has the "seems like a good idea at the time" chorus made me leave everyone at the booth and run/float to the front where I was accommodated. i am glad this band enjoys laughing at me as much as I enjoy begin redeemed by them! THEN DEEEEEEEEP ELEM holy moses oh yes please this was when I KNEW THIS WAS THE SET i have been dreaming of the last few weeks! i even tried to escape by the last lines but back at the booth the girls had it covered and they were playing Suite at the Mission and after being forced to dance with that bitch to this song in her enslavement last year and getting to freely spin and cry to it this year cleansed my souls of stains i didn't know had been there so long. THANK YOU. I LIVED TO TELL!!!!!

When Hand Jive started I started hand jiving and no one else was there yet but by the time they caught up we were ALL giggles and doing that crazy hand jive with ecstatic joy that few other songs can bring out! snakebite was seductive and heavy just to give us CUMBERLAND to end the night with THANK YOU!

this was a show I will not soon forget, and I had most of it memorized leaving the venue.

I get two more nights and then most of next week and I am dragging Mango, Noah and Riley to what I can (DSO spoiled them and they have trouble anywhere else, i know every time I go see DNB and talk about DSO they are like, "oh silly little girl", but each time a few more of them COME to DSO so this APRIL is gonna be IT!)

all this after my first WINERY TOUR with Mango and it was sooooo cool! I LOVE SONOMA! we are gonna be happy here for a long time!
