Forum MVP Tea Posted July 20, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 DSO recreated one of the better shows in 1989. Here it is: Grateful Dead Live at Alpine Valley Music Theatre on 1989-07-18 Set 1: Touch Of Gray, Jack Straw, Jack A Roe, Minglewood Blues, Friend Of The Devil, Memphis Blues, Bird Song, Promised Land Set 2: Sugar Magnolia-> Scarlet Begonias-> Women Are Smarter-> Eyes Of The World-> Drums-> Space-> China Doll-> Dear Mr. Fantasy-> Hey Jude Reprise-> Throwing Stones-> Sunshine Daydream E: The Mighty Quinn A little help on the filler? Happy that they recreated a show from one of the best weekends of my life. Sad that I was not there to see DSO shred their interpretation... Forum MVP found Posted July 20, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 This was the 80's set selected for the new years show. I'll never forget that sugar scarlet transition. Sounded a lot like the deads original transition. So fluid, like they're playing two different songs at the same time but melded perfectly together. I'm sure this show was a smoker. Great setlist. Forum MVP Tea Posted July 20, 2012 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 Other than the dreaded "Scarlet>something else" While the original was done well, including DSO's crack at the classic, I couldn't agree more. While I am not a Women-R-Smarter hater, it is the proverbial needle off the record when it comes to its intertwining with Scarlett. Fire is obviously the perfect compliment and to take it in this different tonal direction let's the air out of the balloon for me. Sharing Sugar Mags with the great Scarlet bridge meanderinging into a groovy, silky, yet powerful Fire, is where it's at. I saw the Scarlet > Victim > Fire at Deer Creek (I think) that Bruce led and while it was good, I was really nervous that they were going to go somewhere else with it. As a fan, If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
TJed
Absolutely stellar re-creation last night at the GOTV with incredible filler: St Stephen/NFA/St Stephen/NFA So much better than the movie!
Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted July 20, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 I was thinking of the movie too, having recently seen it and not being able to make the original (damn the then marriage) or this show (damn the now reality). I had a feeling about it and appreciate the confirmation. As for Scarlet>Anything Other Than Fire When it is a Show Later than March '77, well, "interruptus" just never satisfies as much as a happy ending. But it beats some alternatives hands down, so to speak.
Forum MVP found Posted July 20, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 Obviously scarlet fire is the creme de la creme but I can really dig and appreciate something fresh, different, and unexpected such as the scarlet sugar above or a scarlet touch fire

Forum MVP Evangeline Posted July 20, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 20, 2012 And what a beautiful China Doll--absolutely gorgeous!! I was so lucky that although I couldn't ditch work to get to the Vibes I was able to hear TaperRob's stream and I was in ecstacy last night!! Even though I always prefer the live experience, I am grateful to have been able to hear. I just closed my eyes and imagined the rest!

TerrapinJen
dso always seems to knock it out of the park at the big festivals. ill be damned if they didnt pick up a ton more fans that night who were hearing them for the first time. the beginning of the first set found us down in front with tons of room to dance and move. by jack a roe i was getting jostled by young kids too fucked up to even stand up straight and talkers who didnt even seem to notice there was a band on stage. by friend of the devil, i had reached my limit of annoyance and it was interfering with my ability to enjoy the show. its annoying when i want to be close enough to see the magic happening on stage, but that means i have to put up with that crap. we moved to the back where the sound wasnt as crisp and you couldnt see anything worth a damn, but there was tons of space and dancers all around. ahh at last i was able to be free to enjoy myself and the music. bird song and the whole second set were stellar, they really seemed to find their grove. i really enjoyed the china doll/mr fantasy/throwing stones. the crowd really got into the mighty quinn, and everyones mind was blown when they seamlessly and effortlessly moved back and forth from st steven and nfa for the filler. after the show ended, i loved hearing people say to their friends that the dso show was going to be the best show of the festival. as a survivor of all four days of the festival, id have to agree. although bobby and phil were good, phil's second set especially, and mickey hart blew my mind, and they are some of the founding fathers of our culture and the reason we have festivals today, i firmly believe that dso plays the dead better and more authentically. they really tore the place down. after dso ended i made the comment that i wish dso was staying to play the other three nights, rickE reminded me that i have the jubilee to look forward to, where i will get just that. so until then i must play the waiting game
Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted August 15, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted August 15, 2012 My Return to the Vibes I hadn't been to the Vibes since 09. I am sure many of those that follow this scene and this music are aware of the tragic events that transpired in 09. I don't really care to rehash the details, but let say their was a very ugly element to the festival and some less than savory characters. I had been assured that the Vibes had cleaned up its act and at the requests of some of my friends, I decided to give the Vibes another chance. Allgood would have been the easier selection as I attended the Furthur Rochester Hills show on the Wednesday night preceding. I would have to say that the 4 hr DSO time slot vs the 1 hr and 30 min time slot was probably the true deciding factor. I am pleased to report that the Vibes has indeed cleaned up its act and given the right line-up and circumstances, I would be happy to return. They do seem to always have DSO playing the headlining slot on Thursday. DSO was hands down the show of the festival. I am partial. If you don't play JGB or GD, you probably don't have a chance. I really enjoyed Phil's 2nd set and I can't seem to get enough of the Mickey Hart Band. I especially like the song "cut the deck." I missed Billy K because I was scared of the rain. I have braved the rain many times for this music, but I have never been impressed with Billy K's bands enough to think it was necessary this time around. I'm sure with current line-up of musicians Billy has put together they put on a great show. I also enjoyed STS9 and Primus, but when it comes down to it, DSO blew everyone's sets and shows out of the water. First set highlights include Jack Straw, Minglewood, and Bird Song. After what was a low energy start (touch) for me, Jack Straw really got me moving a grooving. I was completely exhausted by this point as I had not slept since Wednesday morning, but by the end of Jack Straw, I knew the music and the energy of the night would carry me through DSO's set. Anyone that is familiar with DSO knows that they bring the heat on Jack Straw. The song gets really jammed out there, but doesn't really get too psychedelic, which makes it easy to dance to with undulating speeds and rhythms. I also find this song really gets the crowd jazzed up. In this case, being such a large crowd, maybe a little too jazzed up and it wouldn't be long before TJen and I had to retreat in proximity to the stage. Minglewood was raucous fun as the crowd a frenzied crowd scoped out the scene with a big whooping grin. Summer festival season always bring out some good looking girls. I generally prefer a slower tempo FOTD, but given my state of exhaustion, the more uptempo version was probably more fitting. We did indeed set out running, but taking our time. The set took on a lot more serious and somber tone and DSO moved through the wonderful masterpiece that is Bird Song. Some serious psychedelic and spacey jamming here. This song means a lot to me as I am sure it means a lot to many of us here. Most probably know that the song was penned in remembrance of the passing of Janis Joplin. This song always makes me think, feel, and missed loved ones that have passed away. Not always an easy experience, but definitely an experience necessary from time to time in one's life. DSO followed Bird Song with Promised Land and the end of the set had become apparent. By this time, I should have recognized the show. I def could feel a 88 or 89 vibes, but I have familiarity with this whole Alpine 89 run. I am partial to the first show. Jerry has a lyrical mishap or a dyslexic moment during Built to Last. It wasn't followed by any epic jam as this song doesn't really have it in, but overall I love the energy of that first Alpine 89 show. The first night had the last push and the return of we bid you goodnight for the first time since 78. All that being said, all 3 shows were great, and as Tea stated, DSO chose a great 89 selection. 80s shows can be snoozefests, but this one certainly does not qualify. The whole 2nd set was great. I loved the sugar > scarlett transition. I enjoyed the energy of the women are smarter and the energy stayed high pretty much throughout. The generally raucous crowd quieted during China Doll. I would have to say that was probably the overall highlight of the night for me. The song really moves me and touches me in away few others can and I lost myself in the energy of the night as I made my final push to stave off the need for sleep and dance my way through the rest of the show. Baracco always nails fantasy. Great energy and a song I feel could've been written about Jerry. I love the energy of that tune. I always seemed to get jazzed up for Throwing Stones, I find Eaton's vocal delivery to be top notch and the song to be very easy to move, jump, and prance around during. All in all, a great set and a great show. The Vibes was a great time. Although I thought the best music came on Thursday, it was great to hang with so many friends. The bigger festivals can bring a lot of ugly elements to it, but they also bring back a lot of familiar faces. A special note must be made to the great time TJen and I had with Sarah. It was great to hang with her for a whole weekend when she was working and being a DSO alumni I think we all appreciated Sarah's kindness and smile during her time working merch for DSO. She is truly a special person and provided us a special gift during her time with us. I am glad that when the job ended the friendship didn't. Love ya Sarah.
