TJed
Wow, this one looks totally amazing! i guess it was "just" another night on the road for DSO or was this show selected to celebrate a special occasion? Regardless, hope all there enjoyed this one.
Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted July 2, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 2, 2012 Nothing to say after looking at that set list but "wow!" I imagine there have been connectivity issues out there so looking forward to some updates when folks get settled.

Forum MVP Tea Posted July 3, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 3, 2012 Oh me oh my.... That list quickens the pulse and makes my DSO itch stronger than most any salve (save for the LIVE antidote). I will impatiently await a thorough detail of the evenings events from those in attendance. Those Good Lovin and Lovelight sandies in one 'sitting' 'setting' would have stuffed me silly. You go DSO! Forum MVP Mango Posted July 4, 2012 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 4, 2012 A phenomenal piece of history, given life by the Dark Star Orchestra once again. One of the coolest things about seeing this band is when you figure out what show is being played during the show(rarely for me, but perhaps less so for those more memory inclined). The acoustic set didn't ring any bells for me(loved the frozen logger btw!) but when the second set opened with 'morning dew' I thought to myself, "this could be 6-6-70", which is actually silly because back in those days it was a lot more common of a tune(especially to open a set). The dew was strong, a powerful way to set the tone to what would be a jam-packed show. The next two tunes seemed about right for the order of the suspected show but it was at the start of Dancin that I became fairly sure of it and thought back to a post of my own and a conversation with a band member pertaining to a certain jam within this and some other jam vehicles in late 69/early 70: (taken from toads place thread from a couple months ago) "....Loved the old school dancin to get things started...but seriously guys(and I'm talking to you rob b because I know you read this shit) ya gotta take that jam out further. For reference put on 6-6-70 and check out the 'hypnotized jam'...we need that juiciness and so do y'all:)" Now for reference to what the hell i'm talking about I'll include a link: http://archive.org/details/gd1970-06-06.sbd.miller.86951.sbeok.flac16 Listen for it starting around 5:30. Now i'm not sure if I have the name right, I've seen it listed that way. Any ideas? DSTONE?? I've also heard this theme within Dark Star in late 69. The boys(dso this time) nailed it, beyond perfection. Seeing it all go down, while knowing what show we were witnessing, was a pretty special experience for me(and i'm sure anyone else with a pair of ears that was in attendance). I mean it was just unbelievable, the best shit i've ever seen, hands down. I really hope that some kind of video or audio is released because it, among other sections of the show, were groundbreaking in terms of what this band has accomplished musically. 'next time you see me' was my 100% assurance that we were seeing and hearing 6-6-70, a good version too though I must admit I missed ms. mackey's harp playing a bit considering the era and all... 'good lovin>drums>new orleans>good lovin' was a fun whirlwind of dance(rapless, but that would be taken care of later:D). 'Alligator' was absolutely huge. The jam went to many places and stretched on for a quite a while, very much to my delight. This segment is another that i'd love to be able to hear again. The transition into lovelight was totally smooth, reminded me a little of the transition from 'eleven>lovelight' from Live/Dead. As always it was fun story time with Baraccopig who reminded us the importance of his mother's advice, that being that one should keep their hands out of their pockets if they intend to pick up that sweet lady dancing beside you. He informed us that "pocket pool" was "so yesterday". He did say, however, that on certain occasions it might behove of you to keep one hand in there, for protection;) That might have been the dustiest show i've ever been to but it was damn well worth it. Forum MVP Mango Posted July 4, 2012 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 4, 2012 Listening to the alligator from the original show and i'm hearing that DSO hit on many of the same themes. They must have studied this one! Cool
Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted July 5, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 5, 2012 AHHHHH this was soooo amazing!!! my heart has started racing and my feet tapping just typing these words and beginning to pull the night out of my memory to hand it to you guys all gift wrapped like I always try to. Statebridge is one of those places. A vortex of grateful energy. Sure, the local dub step loving youngins can make it a little trashy, but its just a sign of the times. This place is so special and sweet you ALL must go, one way or another. My second year seeing them here and it knew it would be hard for them to top last year but um, this is DSO we are talking about, so of course they really just outdid themselves on every level imaginable. Favorite recreation show I think I have ever seen.... oh, for sure! I will listen to to over and over when we finally get to download it from the website hehe Asked Jeff about the Frozen Logger (he said the name after the song and Eaton only did 3 verses and said he did't remember the rest) and he said that Bobby had never remembered all 5-6 verses but that they were pretty entertaining when i asked after the set. here ya go: As I strolled out one evening within a small cafe A forty year old waitress to me these words did say I see that you are a logger and not just a common bum Because no one but a logger stirs his coffee with his thumb'' My lover was a logger but not like none today If you'd pour whiskey on it he'd eat a bale of hay My lover came to see me upon one freezing day He held me in a fond embrace which broke three vertebrae Well he kissed me when we parted so hard that he broke my jaw I could not speak to tell him that he forgot his mackinaw I saw my logger leaving sauntering through the snow Going bravely homeward at forty eight below The weather it tried to freeze him It tried its very best At a hundred degrees below zero he buttoned up his vest It froze clear down to china It froze the stars above At a gazillion degrees below zero It froze her logger love And so I lost my lover And to this cafe I come And here I wait till someone Stirs his coffee with his thumb Anyways, there was definitely no easing in, this acoustic set was roaringly stomping hopping worthy thru and thru. Candyman was extremely great and I really love Jeff's deep elem's he really just goes and flows with it lyrically and I dig it. Cumberland and new speedway were particularly tasty and we all loved waking up with little suzie. Okay, this first electric set, second set of the show was one of the best sets of music I have ever witnessed with only 2 or three other sets on the table in near comparison. As Dew called us all into the madness of the beginning of the end times I could see that even when we are all gone the energy from this music will always return and I think the band couldn't have played a better set opening Dew. uncle was like a flash of cowboy light and the despicable ones always do get their way in the end, the rest of us left dead on the side of the road (good place to hitch a ride from to the next show....) and I have NEVER gotten so into Casey Jones in my life (I have sat down for this one, I'll admit) so heck yeah I'll keep ridin' that train! Dancin'. This is the song DSO was playing the moment I 'got it' at my first show. If THIS had been my first show it would have been the same story. The jam Mango was talking about above made him say to me when they started it, "this is it!" and I knew exactly what he was talking about as it had just occurred to me as well and we both travelled through other dimensions on the hypnotized notes of music that you wouldn't think was being made anymore but it is by DARK STAR ORCHESTRA. The whole universe was smiling on these musicians in this moment. Mango told me it would be 'that show' when Next time you see me was next and it was and he was so freaking adorable in his big grin and bear overalls he has claimed from me and we got so down to it! words that always just seen to ring so true these days. the world is changing fast! I commented about this to Mango later, but I just love china>rider when my mind is all glowing with lovebows and raintrails. it always sounds so DIFFERENT (I know, that's kinda a dumb thing to say about a Dead song, but bear with me!) cause it is just one of those perfectly constructed psychedelic gems that can't help but take you to a new home every time!! from my first show until I got in Mango's car, I had been casting a spell EVERY TIME I had saw China>Rider, DSO or Furthur, because March had become such a pinnacle month of change for me (birthday month among other things) and it felt good to dance it at Statebridge just for the PURITY OF THE DANCE and not to cast healing magic. its cool how songs come and go in different ways for each of us, I watch it happening to those around me and it is why I love this band and the people I meet at the shows so much..... deep connections that know no boundaries just tying us all up in a gregorian knot.... BAM slashed through by the sword of set break and we are left alone to wonder lost without the music and just find each other in the dark until we see the shadows of the flame and then finally hear word of light outside the cave as we emerge and find that all we really needed was GOOD LOVIN'!!!!!! damn mothafreakin straight. rolling drums and ridiculously romping New Orleans.... they have more fun with this one EVERY time I see them play it and this time it was a how-fast-can-we-make-them-dance and I woulda gotten motion sickness if my own velocity wasn't speeding along at the same rate as everyone else's for I do believe there was not a single blade of grass that stood still that could have observed us to the point of realizing this kind of energy is just otherworldly. whoa. back to good lovin and then an attics like you just wouldn't believe and that they held THAT kind of dense love with their instruments and especially their voices that we could all feel cloaking us in grateful discovery of all we thought we had lost as it flew home to the dreaming heart has made me finally accept this song into my own heart as a moment of bliss like few others. Mango made chomping motions with his hand and spoiled alligator coming for me (most lovingly, of course) but it was dire wolf (who also chomps! hehe) then alligator and the dire wolf was a great set up for an alligator that really ate the rest of our face that the wolves may have left in their retreat. Barraco channeled Pig on this night in a way that I have never quite witnessed before. Something, some spirit matter, was jumping off his skin and vibrating around his aura and ya'll that weren't there I am really sorry cause even though we didn't get dark star or other one and it was a really pig heavy show THIS LOVELIGHT was one of those time transcenders for SURE! The way he came back around to why having the one hand left in the pocket worked made his rap a true piece of musical genius and his sense of the moment throughout combined with it to make is voice an instrument that the band could barely handle or keep up with. NFA all sandwiched in and EVERY transition this night was just so pristine but this one had so much energy there was a little confusion but it just added to the madly swirly good vibes and by this point the audience was beside themselves in altered states of dance ecstasy and the UJB encore was magnificent and well received by all. FILLER: Golden Road and Bid You Goodnight MY OH MY we just followed that Golden Road to all kinds of unlimited devotions and in our final devotion on our saviors breast I found myself wishing Black mountain was not so far away both in space and time because I want more music like this RIGHT NOW. wow, guys, perfect finish for such a show. wow. wow. I will always be grateful that I was AT THIS SHOW. This was one of THOSE ones. then we picked up miss brown the bunny to bring here home to CA with the other bunnies that we are about to get arranged in their happy outdoor cages and the baby chics are hardly recognizable with almost all their feathers now grown in and doubled size so you guys when DSO plays WEST COAST come have some farm fresh eggs and hang out in the fairy ring with the bunnies with us and until then we'll see those of you we don't see before then when we MEET YOU AT THE JUBILEE! Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted July 5, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 5, 2012 "Lovebows and raintrails" are one thing, but a "gregorian knot" - that's just twisted! Grate read, as usual...teach your bunnies well...
Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted July 5, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 5, 2012 the gregorian knot was for you, specifically, Chuckles, glad you received the message did i mention that Eaton looked like a schoolboy up there playing for CO folks with electric jitters and joy tumbling all around? I love seeing musicians in areas with lots of their friends and Eaton in CO is one of those not to be missed events..... fluttering joy for the whole run especially Statebridge cause it's SPECIAL! TerrapinJen
two words about this show: dust bowl. the shuffling feet of dancers was creating such a dust storm of sand and grit that i felt i had sand coming out of my pores for days afterwards. show was excellent and it was refreshing to not have cell service for two days. we camped up in the campground that night, but spent some time in the yurt with friends. aaron and steph summed up the show pretty well and other than the dusty-ness and super dry skin afterwards, i dont have much more to add. it was a great way to end the colorado run and was glad to be apart of the magic.
