Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted May 30, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 30, 2012 04/23/77 Springfield Civic Center - Springfield, MA Set 1: Sugaree Cassidy Loser New Minglewood Blues Row Jimmy Me And My Uncle Ramble On Rose It's All Over Now Scarlet Begonias Fire On The Mountain Set 2: (METS theme sung by girls in crowd played by Barraco after checking score/win status) Estimated Prophet Bertha The Music Never Stopped Help On The Way> Slipknot!> Franklin's Tower> Around And Around> Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad> Not Fade Away Encore: One More Saturday Night Filler: Sisters and Brothers Wonderful in so many ways. Sugaree grabbed the crowd from the start and I dare say Jeff made playthings of everyones brains on this fine eve. Really strong first set and the transition from scarlet to fire was very special. Prophet to start second was just what everyone didn't know they wanted but needed and the Bertha and Music continued the Mattson onslaught. Monstrous help>slip>franklin's and I must say I almost shed a tear or two as Jeff hit the notes to signify we were indeed gdtrfb and I thought to myself I really am going where the water tastes like wine and really, well, I am already here. Thanks for the sisters and brothers, I made peace and more with the females on either side of me by the end of the show that had kind of irritated me in the beginning. Just goes to show. LOTS of check ins tonight from those at their first DSO show and a few that have been coming back again and again after seeing Furthur.... Mattson is on everyone's mind in this community it seems Love it. Says so much when people come one night and then just keep coming back because they just can't help it..... that's the stuff. Forum MVP found Posted May 30, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 30, 2012 Great show. Can't beat a scarlet fire and a help slip franklins in the same show. Also should be noted that last nights performance was dedicated to doc Watson. Love Brooklyn bowl but that place was wayyyy too packed. Tomorrow brings my tour to close. See you all at the peak. Forum MVP August West Posted May 31, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 31, 2012 Show of the tour for me, hands down. Just killer. I actually found way more space near the rail during the second set., than at the board where I spent the first set. I felt bad for Cotter as people were disrespecting his space, placing drinks in his area, and moving his ropes and stuff. Did the best I could but by the break I had, had enough. I would surmise there was no ballad by design, as you couldn't really obtain quiet moments with pins being scattered. Really great HD video screens all around. I never saw that many people in that place ever. It was definetely oversold, but for the band a homerun. Still love that venue, and the food is yummy, as is the selection of IPA'S. I can see them doing a run there for sure. Have fun presenting testimony in court Vegas, You can come back and be America's guest anytime buddy, it was a pleasure having you. Me, I'm on the road heading for another joint. And yes Lisacat, You Win Again. I met your brother Mike at the CC yesterday in Wilmington. Super nice guy. Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted May 31, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 31, 2012 Welcome back, Stout. I figured it was just a matter of time. I know how much steely determination you both have, but the outcome was a foregone conclusion. We always did feel the same...
Forum MVP Mango Posted May 31, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 31, 2012 The best venues, in my not so humble opinion, are ones that separate drinkers from non-drinkers. I'm becoming increasingly annoyed with people and their drinks, and really drinking in general. While I haven't hardly consumed any alcohol recently(in a health effort) I was never one to carry a drink around on the dance floor when I was drinking at shows. And I certainly never threw my cup on the ground when i was done. The other night in Brooklyn people were carrying pitchers of beer into the crowd and then just dropping them on the floor when they were finished. Disgusting. By setbreak that place was so littered with cups and pitchers that I felt the need to carry an armful to the bar...of course its impossible to move through a crowd in NYC, no one cares about anyone else and most people are completely drunk(at the expense of those around them). I don't have a problem with the consumption of alcohol but I've really seen some sad shit on this tour and it makes me sad. It makes me sad at how pathetic and unhappy people are, and how that comes out in disruptive and disrespectful ways. Its sad to me that this is how venues make money, and really the whole thing is fucked up. It's pretty frustrating when you travel all over the country for the love of the music(and particularly this band) and then you just find yourself surrounded by obnoxious morons who want to talk through the entire show but then clap when the song is over like they were enjoying it the whole time. Fucking NE....i'm done with this coast. I guess once you go west you can't go back....I love my dso family out here but this place sucks people. If you don't think so then there is probably a pretty good chance that you are one of these assholes. and don't even get me started on the nitrous sales right outside of the venue...I've seen the same assholes in NH as NJ and I wish they would just go away...but more than that I wish that my peers would stop purchasing their cheap high, because if ya'll weren't such big suckers then these guys wouldn't come around. But everyone else is doing it so its ok, right? ok, rant over... I thought this show was magnificently played, from the very start and all the way through. Jeff's solos in Sugaree absolutely soared and 10 minutes or so in I couldn't believe it was still the first song of the show. The transition from scarlet to fire was very special, especially since I had been thinking for the whole set that we were witnessing a 76 show(found said the same thing but Steph claims that she thought otherwise;>). Jeff may have sung the last verse first but it's all good with me....very jerry-esque. Second set was smokin and once August West came and cleared they way we had plenty of room to dance(thanks greg and mary). Sisters and brothers was oh so appropriate for this typically obnoxious NY crowd. One more night for us....Penn's Peak, one of my favorites. Looking forward to a good time tonight and then back home to cali for a break until the Colo shows. It's been a fantastically fun ride, thanks to all who were involved. sonomajon
Mango...You would have loved touring in the 70's...I don't remember any alcohol at venues in 76-80 or so...Never any at the college venues...no bottled water, only water fountains, and no cell phones! Anyone remember when booze started being sold? I saw the 80' Radio City shows but really wasn't into drinking at the time maybe someone else remembers ? Forum MVP found Posted May 31, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 31, 2012 Mango, I am a little disappointed with myself. I should have known this show being that it's the only 77 show with Scarlet Fire and a Help Slip Franklins. Could have swore it was 76 until that Fire had hit us. Doh! Now you got me thinking though... Am I one of those disgusting, Jersey, alcohol-consumed curmudgeons? Stop making me so self conscious with your hippie ways! Disgusting. By setbreak that place was so littered with cups and pitchers that I felt the need to carry an armful to the bar... The Bill Graham Civic (yeah, sadly a WEST coast venue) is a gross place to see a show on the main floor. They sell beer, and in wide rimmed cups. By set break, the floor (which started out only as cold, hard cement) is sticky and, in places, drenched. You're lucky if you aren't in a puddle of beer when the lights come on. I'm a newb but I don't go around saying 76 is my fave year because I've never heard it and would like to, I say that because I listen to it obsessively cause NONE OF YOU OTHER PEOPLE ever put on 76 shows you always go for your 77/78 or your pre hiatus preference or even Brent deliciousness but ya'll NEVER put on 76 so I always do and I KNOW a 76 setlist when I hear it and this one was much too "normal" feeling set wise in the first set so by scarlet I knew there would be a fire, but no one asks me and I don't tell. anyways, this was def one of my fave shows as well and now that it is all over til CO I am just a little sad that the unicorn hat has to go on a peg again for a minute...... onto my Penns Peak review, just had to settle the score with Mr Mango Star and Mr Founder than Thou (hehehehehe) cause I DID KNOW

Forum MVP found Posted June 1, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 1, 2012 There are some aspects about 76 that really draw me in. The help slip franklins tend to be bigger and spacier. The playin sandwiches are humongous. A lot of the material is fresh and new. It's really cool to hear those songs shape and mold through out the year. I find it to be very rambunctious and boisterous yet very deep and spacey at the same time. The way the set lists flow is very very interesting to me.
