It appears that Doc Watson has suffered a very nasty fall and is currently in critical condition.

Raleigh, N.C. (AP) --

Grammy-winning folk musician Doc Watson was in critical condition Thursday at a North Carolina hospital after falling at his home in Deep Gap earlier this week.

Watson's daughter, Nancy, told The Associated Press that the 89-year-old Watson fell Monday at his home. She said he didn't break any bones but that he was "real sick."

A spokeswoman at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem said Arthel Watson — Arthel is his legal first name — was in critical condition Thursday. The blind singer and guitarist has won several Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award. He also received the National Medal of the Arts.

Watson also received the North Carolina Award, the state's highest civilian award, in 1986. He and his family received a North Carolina Heritage Award in 1986.

He's known as a master of the flatpicking style of guitar playing and for starting Merlefest, an annual gathering of musicians in North Wilkesboro named after his son, a musician who died in a tractor accident in 1985.

Doc Watson's wife of more than 60 years, RosaLee, has been in a nursing home since last year, Nancy Watson said. The two married when she was 15 and he was 23.

"She saw what little good there was in me and there was little," Doc said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."

Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said Watson takes southern Appalachian forms of music, such as ballad singing, old-time string music and bluegrass, and makes them accessible.

"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."

I've never met Doc but I have always paid attention to his posts for no better reason than we share a last name and my Dad's nickname as a child was also Doc. 89 years old?!?! Doesn't this guy still go to shows? He must be a young 89 to still go to shows, and for that I am hopeful for his recovery.

Get well Doc.

Not the Doc Watson from the DSO board > Doc Watson the bluegrass legend.

As my friend and fellow Carolina boy Tea for Texas states, Doc Watson is a legendary flat picker from Deep Gap, NC and certainly beloved in these parts. MerleFest, one of the largest and best bluegrass festivals in the US is held in honor of his son in Wilksboro, NC where youll find Doc doing a workshop and telling stories in a tent for 50 people and 30 minutes later on the main stage playin for 5000. Godspeed Doc!! We love you!

Life couldn't get any better for me.

I guess really believing that, I would think it's going to get worse...but all I can say is I don't see how it could get any better.

Hope you and the DSO gang are your normal fabulous selves Mr. Vegas (cause you guys ARE fabulous), and hope to see you in the not too distant future.

Here's me and Emmy ('scuse the grammar)

Sweet as it gets Stone - thanks for sharing! Mine are growing so fast its almost impossible to keep up :)

Don't worry about the Cubs. They were expected to have a tough year. The Tigers on the other hand were supposed to be the class of their division. Instead are sittin at 28-32. Eeeep.

Don't be a Stranger > good to see you pop up!

Yeah, I honestly can't recall a team I felt was worse than this one and I go back to a few years before the Lee Elia rant days:

My first Cub game pn TV was in '76 when I was 6 and thought my brother was pitching a game for Chicago (I have an older brother named Steve).

At least we have someone who (I hope) knows what they're doing. Most Cub fans like myself just want to see us start to have a good minor league system as a beginning to something.

Great being back here...not easy to find a thread to reply on but hey...this one was as good as any. Mr Watson will be missed.

Big hello to all the star/dead heads I know and love on this fantastic board.

(exclamation point)
