Forum MVP found Posted May 6, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 I will say that last night was beyond special. Very amazing show and so happy I could be there to celebrate Dave's life and to benefit the hospice foundation. First set was spectacular. Loved the shape I'm in. SOTOTW had jeff just wailing on the guitar. To say Lisa was electirfying on Hurts me too and White Rabbit would be an understatement. Box of Rain was tight wiht lots of smiles shared by the band. Skip definitely has a more aggressive approach on the bass and it comes through real heavy. I thought he meshed real well with the band. Midnight moonlight was a great closer for the set. Felt like a good ole hoe down. Second set really really took off. China>rider was off the walls. Eaton's solo was fucking killer. Hard to Handle had a nasty rap by Barraco and a real slimey, heavy jam. Sing Me Back Home was just exactly perfect. Fantastic job by Jeff vocally. The music was so sublime. Lots of space between notes. Very gentle and soulful. The cryptical>drums>other one>cryptical>eyes>morning dew was just completely bonkers. I thought that whole passage really highlighted Skip's strong bass qualities. Very thunderous and plays well with the harmonies. He does a lot repeating of certain phrases but adds little variations that keep pushing the jams farther out and I thought the band had some really good chemistry and communication. The Other One just kept going and going. All kinds of ups and downs, highs and lows. Very, very psychedelic. Eyes of the World had that extended jam and was strong with some masterful work by both Jeff and Skip. And I don't even know what to say about that Morning Dew except wow. Jaw dropping for sure. And might I add that Rob was laying down some exceptionally awesome rhythm parts particularly on The Other One and Morning Dew It was a real intimate and emotional night. Lots of energy in that room. It was so good to see a lot of great friends. I'll see you all at Terrapin Nation. Maybe Oneonta if people can convince me that I don't need to work. So happy that tour is finally here. Greg, I think the guitar Jeff was playing was Dave's guitar but I could be totally wrong about that.

Forum MVP Evangeline Posted May 6, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 That was Jeff's new Travis Bean TB1000s making its debut last night. Loved the show and it was gratifying to see the excellent turnout to benefit Tarlowe's family. Loved Skip's bass playing--he is really fantastic! Lisa was just amazing--she really blew me away with Hurts Me Too. So many highlights in this show, and I just love that Tarlow original, Late Movie. The Dew was some very creamy icing on the cake. Obliterated the whole room! Great seeing so many friends last night too!!
Forum MVP found Posted May 6, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 Yeah. I wasn't sure if that was a new guitar or not. Looked like it already had some mileage on it. Plus, I thought I saw a picture of Dave playing that guitar. I also want to add that Dave's brother said a nice bit about his brother that ended in a resounding and deafening applause. Thanks to everyone who made last night possible.
Guest Rob Eaton
I want to thank everybody from the bottom of my heart for supporting last nights memorial Benefit for my dear friend Dave Tarlowe. We raised over $6000 dollars for the Hospice. We had a great time and it was food to play with my own band mates again.. Skip had always been the man and last night he proved it...... Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted May 6, 2012 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 I'll say it every time- I really love when Jack Straw starts the show. Standing there waiting for the music to start was almost as fun as the show itself and the ride home was equally memorable because I haven't been in the NE to see this band in nearly 2 years and nights like this are rare and precious gems created in the bowels of grateful deadology and pushed into the surface of our experience just in time to remind me that there really is a fountain that was not made by the hands of man. This is going to be the most amazing tour of my life, I can feel it. Its in the air. As the music started I felt like I barely remembered how to dance because the nostalgic feelings kept pushing in on me but then I remembered it is those feelings that make us so light so as Lisa peeled the tears from our bone marrow in hurts me too I sent every vibration in that room to my girl in cali that I left with the words "listen to hurts me too from any DSO recording or from '69 Dead if you need to remember my message in your life" and free of such blonde haired women I truly felt I was sittin on top of the world (but I MISS THE DSO DRUM DUO, there just aren't many other Drummers that can keep me grounded like they do, I'm spoiled though the change was fun of COURSE!). Skip's box of rain was gorgeous and exhilarating- his stage presence and playing REALLY impressed me and grooved me and the way he played with Eaton at the beginning and then SO MUCH with Jeff by the end was just CLASSIC even though I've never seen it before! GOOD feelings! GREAT job with the song and then the interlude into border legion land had everyone in the room really rocking and smiling at the new energies being presented and the fun the band was having tackling and winding through the songs. I really enjoyed let it rain a whole lot for some reason- it just felt really good. Finally got my Lisa white rabbit that I've been waiting for YAY THANK YOU and I could just feel the midnight moonlight coming after it and wasn't disapointed although I WAS VERY SAD mr joseph wasn't there cause he talks bout white rabbit all the time and he always gives a nice girl in the front 2 nickles or a dime in mnml and he wasn't there to do so only times since my first 3 shows that he wasn't there while seeing most of DSO... wow. the china rider was very bouncy and fun but that hard to handle indeed WAS as it lived up to its name and I think a lot of space cleared around the dancers in the crowd because everyone got really big and dirty and silly in their dancing and I think it was at the end of this song that I noticed some girl like REALLY staring me down (sweetly but in a dude it might have creeped me out...?) and she was standing by the door and started filming me with her phone by greatest story or something and that was really really weird cause she was too far away to stop and it wasn't exactly invasive but was slightly soul stealing.... hmmmm, hope she enjoys. anyways, that HARD TO HANDLE ladies and gentleman! YES! the BEW was really special and sweet and the greatest story made the room get all electric and colorfully spinalicious just in time for a body melt of swirling sound that sing me back home became as sorrow and the days of yesteryear became one soulful voice in Mattson and his new guitar really found definition in the room as it sang through our souls. thank you. i have been wanting that one quite a lot. next time you see me pretty much made me fall over myself with joy and hilarity of being here on the east coast (was in the beginning of my first show down south in ATL) again in such diff circumstances than before and the band was relentless with the hard hitting swinging. that final string there at the end of cryptical thru dew was just exactly what EVERYONE in that room had been waiting for and needed. I felt like there were even people who were tired and wanted to sit or leave but could not because it was just so delicious to behold these musicians playing together for such a beautiful cause that was manifested so carefully by so many. I like that the setlist even says '74 end on it, that's cool guys. Obviously I think most of us prefer it that way due to the tastiness and groovability. oh the Ripple in still water that sees us all along that personal highway home. and make it home we did. thank you east coast family for being so beautiful in every way. seeing everyone come out for such a special night couldn't be a better way to get the energies going for this tour. wonderful. heavenly. and the race is on! Guest Rob Eaton
The extra room was from fans and supporters who couldn't make it wanting to make a donation. I had asked folks to buy tickets to support because it served two purposes. One being less packed house 2) money gets donated .. It was a win win situation .... Trivia question.... Where did the name "border legion" come from? Correct answer gets on my guest list 2 tickets to a show of your choice?

Forum MVP August West Posted May 6, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 I thought that Lisa was off the hook as usual during her songs in the 1st set. I've heard her do White Rabbit a few times, and last night's I think was the best ever. Just utterly amazing. As was the Hurts Me Too for that matter...the harmonica playing was just simply sublime. So much soul!! She is such a talented lady. I can't wait for Ernst to load up that Let It Rain because it was tremendous, and I've always loved that song. I thought Tom added a very nice touch helping out on percussion last night, he was very good. Must be the genes. And yeah, Skip is no minor leaguer that's for sure. Just a very, very, special night with alot of love in that place. A beautiful memorial to Dave from his brother, that left us all appreciating the man that he was. Say what you want about New Jersey, but for all of that night the crowd was respectful, energy filled, and quiet. You could have heard a pin drop during the Sing Me Back Home. The sammich to close the show was outer worldly. The interplay, and chemistry between Eaton and Jeff is well.....everything you already know it is. No epiphany there. Eaton does an awful lot for us, and sacrifices many things, as does everyone in that band. I am glad that we all were able to do a little something for him. Forum MVP found Posted May 6, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 6, 2012 Border legion comes from the book of the same name by Zane Grey. In one part, A couple characters are talking about travelers coming out west to find gold and another character says that if it is time for a big gold hunt then it is also time to assemble the greatest band of all time. The band will be called border legion.

topher44
This was truly a blissful night of music and the vibe at Mexicali was so cool and relaxed... it felt at times like we were at a private party! The band was so tight, and although Rob Eaton stated that he and the other folks from DSO taking part hadn't had much time to rehearse with Skip and the two drummers, you coulda fooled me ! As was mentioned earlier, there was plenty of dancing room, and that made the night even more special. I like to think that Dave Tarlowe was with us all in spirit, and it sure felt great to be a part of this warm, uplifting tribute to Rob's dear friend. Highlights for me are hard to pinpoint, but I really got goosebumps during both "Hurts Me Too" and "White Rabbit". Lisa's incredible pipes and excellent harmonica were so soulful and heartfelft, and the crowd erupted after both tunes. The nod to Levon, by way of "Shape I'm In", was a foot-stomping affair, and the harmonies were just stellar. I especially enjoyed Skip's bass and vocal delivery on the Border Legion material, and he just appeared to be having the time of his life up there! On that note, the playfulness between all band members was so fun to watch and hear, and that feeling was mirrored by the crowd. I always love hearing "Midnight Moonlight", and a fine, danceable version this was, indeed. Jeff took the jams to spectacular heights, and the whole room responded in kind. This night, which was not only Cinco de Mayo, also happened to be one in which the moon was to be the closest it gets to earth in its eliptical orbit, and it was to appear quite large and bright right after dusk, as it was on the rise. The cloud cover in our area, however, prevented us from being able to witness this "apogee" moon, but we received an alternate gift in "Midnight Moonlight". The "China>Rider" was a powerful way to open set two, and I let myself go during this duo, thrashing about and reaching for the stars, just fortunate to not have stepped on any toes or elbowed anyone in the eye (another perk of not being in a sardine can!). The band was simply on fire throughout. I had to beg out of the party at this point, so I am grateful to read about the rest of the show from other posters. It was nothing short of a blast, and I bet Dave would have been extra proud of his former bandmates, as well as all the other folks who prepared for and brought to fruition this wonderful tribute to his life and music. Well done. Thanks to Steve for videotaping... your efforts are always much appreciated !!! Topher
