Forum MVP John A Posted March 26, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 26, 2012 At a TRI broadcast last night, Bobby apparently played this for the 1st time publicly since 1987. Really? Is this possible? He hasn't touched it in any act?

michelle
At a TRI broadcast last night, Bobby apparently played this for the 1st time publicly since 1987. Really? Is this possible? He hasn't touched it in any act? 10/3/87 was the last time he played My Brother Esau. You can check it through the Setlists site ... looks like he played it 104 times http://www.setlists.net/?search=true&venue=&city=&state=&month=&day=&year=&songs=my+brother+esau&submit=Search The Ratdog fan site song list stats indicates that he hasn't played it, as well (since '95). I'm grateful Bobby is availing these performances via the internet. I have yet to catch any Terrapin Crossroads gigs. Here's the link to Bobby's song stats since '95 on the Ratdog.org fansite http://ratdog.org/songs/
Guest L~Cat
I caught just the tail end of the TRI gig and really enjoyed it.... I know nothing about the National so wasn't sure what to expect. And I still know nothing about them but I thought it was super sweet..... heartwarming Ripple, UJB, and Brokedown Its nice to see Bob supporting so many charities and doing this type of benefit work.....there is a website you can go to to check out which celebrities support what organizations and I found Bob supports 4 different charities....and not only supports financially, but does gigs like this..... Forum MVP comesatime Posted March 26, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 26, 2012 I think I saw Bob and the GD do Brother Esau 2 or 3 times during the 80's ... I would have never guessed that Bob performed it 104 times ... sorry that I only got a couple out of that 104 ...

Forum MVP John A Posted March 28, 2012 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 28, 2012 Given that Bobby never had an overflowing abundance of material, an Esau or two per tour on going past '87 wouldn't have been the worst fate. And don't get me started on the disappearance of Weather Report and Lazy Lightnin'...
Forum MVP found Posted March 28, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 28, 2012 Love both weather report and lazy lightning/supplication. The prelude and part 1 is just part pf the package, completes the suite. And i love how jazzy that supplication jam gets. Doesnt make sense to me why bobby would ever dropped them. Bt then again not a whole lot makes sense to me. Back to the actual topic, I know Esau was played at the first 8 shows in 83. I don't know what percentage of shows they played it at in 83 is but my guess is it's over half. That's some heavy rotation for a song I'm glad got the boot in 87. Especially after the intro, bridge, and ending got developed .... I don't get the Esau slagging.

topher44
I love Esau! What about it is there not to like? Great groove, lyrics, melody, and arrangement... Especially after the intro, bridge, and ending got developed .... I don't get the Esau slagging. When the GD were in sharp, tight form and played "Esau", I really enjoyed it, too! There was something about the unusual beat, the "in your face" lyrics, and the sudden, forceful ending to this song that made it fun to dance to. I have seen DSO perform it only once, and it was a terrific version (of course!), and I have several recorded takes by DSO from both Nugs and Archive that show it to be a tune that not only Eaton loves to belt out, but also that the rest of the band digs playing. Forum MVP arm Posted March 29, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 29, 2012 StLBlues: Thanks for posting the video. I hadn't seen it. Weir introduces Esau at about 48:33, saying, "This next one...I kind of parked it for twenty or so years." Then, he describes it his typically head-scratching manner: "This one's unfortunately a tale but never tires of telling itself." Yes, it's unfortunate that it's a tale, Bod. Given what the song is about, however, he makes perfect sense. I'm a big Esau fan and have listened to almost every version the Dead did. This is a very sweet rendition. Different than how the Dead played it. This is my particular thing, but I'd prefer it without the horn. Still, this is very, very nice! P.S. I'm no StL Blues fan...but I can look past that!
