So... I've had "The Grateful Dead Bible" for a while, and i'm now going through the Jerry Garcia Band section, cause it's a complete clusterfuck of a mess (organization wise) and there are multiple copies of the same show... there's an audience (.aud.) version, a soundboard (.sbd.) version, and something called a .fob... anyone know what the hell that means?? I've racked my brain (didn't take to long), and came up with nothing...

help?

Thanks!

I believe it is front of board

I actually thought of that, but whats the difference between 'Front of Board' and 'Audience'?? Usually the tapers are in front (next to, or behind) of the soundboard anyway..

??

Yes, it's Front Of Board.

Tapers weren't always afforded the luxury of setting up there. Once it was generally accepted that tapers would tape, a special taping section was set up for them, but it wasn't always the coveted FOB section. But it seems pretty much standard anymore, seeing as how it is often, of course, the best place for sound. (And soundmen will occasionally allow folks to patch in to the SB.) There were issue at (other bands' concerts) where drunken tapers had accidentally unplugged SB equipment, and so FOB is often discouraged by other bands.

I am going by what's in my brain, and some facts may be slightly inaccurate, and I am crap with dates, but I do know that there is pretty much a timeline as to the progression of taping/allowing to tape/taping FOB/patching in.

That's just one of the many things that made the GOGD what they were (are) to us!

Actually, I don't believe there was a single instance when an officially sanctioned taper's section was front of board. That's an irony of the "taper's section". After its establishment (at BCT Fall '84) the quality of recordings got worse. Tapes became more ubiquitous certainly, but of poorer quality. And by the late 80s, the section was not only behind the board but often not directly behind it. At the Oakland Coliseum, for example, they had to leave the area of the floor behind the board for Bill Graham's volleyball games!

I am not certain of this but this is how I would take it.

FOB means front of house board. That means the patch was taken from the front of house mixing board. ...meaning the mix going to the audience.

SBD means it was mixed on a soundboard but that doesn't necessarily mean it was the live sound going to the audience. It was mixed for the tape. Betty Boards are a perfect example. She mixed for the tape but not for the live audience. Dan mixed for the audience and sometimes these mixes are where the recordings you are referencing are from.

We do the same thing. Our official releases are mixed for a recording not for the live audience and they are done from the stage monitor soundboard. Cotter also records a mix for himself from the front of house position. You have to remember he is not mixing for the tape. He is mixing for the audience.
