stlblues
The Grateful Dead is back in select movie theaters nationwide for only one night on Thursday, April 19 at 7:00PM (local time) for the second annual Grateful Dead Meet-Up At The Movies. This year Fathom Events and Rhino Records have reached deep into the Grateful Dead vault to present the unreleased iconic concert captured at Alpine Valley Music Theatre on July 18, 1989 (the show directly following the band's famous Downhill From Here performance.) The event features the complete concert with two and a half hours of music including Touch of Grey, Bird Song, Eyes of the World and more! Fans will also get an exclusive listen of an unreleased live track from Spring 1990 and a look at rare photos of the band from that celebrated tour. www.fathomevents.com/advanceticketdetails.aspx?eve ntid=1075 Set 1 Touch Of Grey Jack Straw Jack-A-Roe New Minglewood Blues Friend Of The Devil Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again Bird Song The Promised Land Set 2 Sugar Magnolia -> Scarlet Begonias Man Smart (Woman Smarter) Eyes Of The World -> Drums -> Space -> China Doll Dear Mr. Fantasy -> Hey Jude Throwing Stones -> Sunshine Daydream Encore The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo)
michelle
wow ~ thanks for sharing the heads up I remember that show... only a little sprinkle of rain that evening .. unlike the next day (july 19) when it just... rained. Lots of people were taking turns sliding down the hill inside the venue like a big mud slip n slide... other people were just slipping and sliding everywhere it was so muddy. People used trash bags for raincoats, to make do. I saw one girl... naked and a little loony walking around ... she paused and laid on the hood of a car (nearly everyone was sitting in cars shortly before time to go in the show, trying to get some shelter from the rain). I see this guy's head pop out of the car and he says something like, "Hey, can you not lay on the hood of my car? Can you move along, please?" She keeps rolling back and forth for a bit, everyone is snickering. These two guys show up, calling her by name and trying to corral her. They get her to stand, attempting to comfort and guide her to get some clothing. She hugs one of the guys... then punches him square in the face and pretty hard. Shortly after an ambulance gave her a ride outta there. These Alpine shows were referred to (then) as one of the last legal vending shows. Then it was off to CalExpo (maybe the last legal vending show... you could sell things without being hassled, for the most part, sometimes camp at the venue, etc). Things were different then (before the downhill from here era). People seemed more respectful and more lowkey, subtle. Camp at the lot and wake up to get blueberry and banana pancakes (usually at one of the many busses on tour), enjoy the day and wait for showtime. Very few officers. Heck, the Deer Creek show, a few days before on July 15, I only saw one officer at the show and he was talking to a head working the concession stand. He smiled at everyone and had a great time. I wonder if it will be acceptable to dance during the movie
redeyedbert
My 3rd show, and the night it all came together for me. This night launched my love affair. Camping in the lot was so much fun.
sudds94
Fun time this whole tour. Met my future(at that time) and now current husband at the Buffalo show 7/4 and he luckily gave me some extra shirts, jackets for the rest of tour and they ended up being my only dry clothes after Alpine. So muddy there that we needed a tractor to help pull our van out of the field. Lots of fun and muddy memories!!
Forum MVP Ammagamalin Crew Posted March 17, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 17, 2012 Three dead shows followed by three who shows gave us a week at Alpine in '89, unfortunately for the who shows we had to leave the lot each night. man my tent was soaked by the end of that week. but that finallyshow of the tour morning dew made it all "matter after all" Glad to see their putting out a full show from this Alpine series, was alittle discouraged when 'down hill" had pieces of different nights. Jerry was all smiles .... bring on the 19th!

stlblues
"I wonder if it will be acceptable to dance during the movie" That notion crossed my mind too. I plan on finding out... I saw a couple heads dancing in the side aisle at the movie theater in St. Louis for "The Grateful Dead Movie" showing a couple years ago. No one from the theater's staff stopped them from dancing. There was only like a dozen peeps there to see the GD Movie, though.

But, it's always good to see other Heads and Jerry. some of these shows have to be seen/heard dozens of times before they reveal themselves. I thought Blossom '85 was an average show, until about the seventh listening

Forum MVP Ammagamalin Crew Posted April 20, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 20, 2012 Wow! as Roger Waters phrased: "It all makes perfect sense" couldn't get my eye off the tail of the tiger, then that second set opener guitar? very personal and friendly, unfortunately the theatre was almost empty, we did burn sage tho http://archive.org/details/gd1989-07-18.119772.nak.boedicker.flac16

My numbers and sentiment exactly. There certainly was plenty of room. But being able to watch them on a big screen and with the sound cranked thanks to a very kind assistant manager - mighty nice! Forum MVP found Posted April 20, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 20, 2012 Really good turn out at my theatre. Probably about 80% sold out. A few dancers here and there but I just stayed in my seat because I fell in love with 50 foot Jerry. Volume was pretty low at first but got cranked up a few songs in, followed by some roaring applause. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

sudds94
Full house at mine, but only a few of us dancing. The music just won't ever let me sit. Wished it could have been louder, but great seeing on the big screen.

Seeing it is much different than listening and then listening again after seeing, understanding now how much Jerry was all set up for a lead when his guitar went out in DMF, they all took the set serious, but JG seems to be so encouraging throughout this whole Alpine run with his smiles and jam temptations. TJed
My 2 cents: Somewhat sheepishly and reluctantly I entered the movie theater last night, knowing that I was going to see an 89 show and supporting the Dead post-Jerry money machine. Cool seeing Jerry up on the bigscreen with more than a touch of grey. Reasonably well-produced considering the technology that was available 23 years ago. First set really was perfectly respectable for the era, solid 3 stars, with a fewhighlights (Minglewood and FOTD). Second set Sugar Mag opener was a treat and watching/listening to Jerry sing Scarlet Begonias was worth the price of admission. No post-1995 singer quite hits the vocals as well as Garcia, IMHO. Totally disappointing to get Women are Smarter rather than the Fire and the Eyes was a bit perfunctory. Left right at the drums/space. Overall band vibe was flat with Jerry smiling the most. No transcendent highlights but plenty of solid enough playing. In sum, an 89 Grateful Dead show pales in comparison to some if not most of our DSO shows. Crazy, huh? Crazy, huh? no, not crazy... thought the same thing and found myself missing certain ways that DSO plays songs like Birdsong, women r smarter, even Minglewood, among others that just get me flying.
