Forum MVP Rude Posted March 5, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 5, 2012 So I was listening to the 5-8-77 barton show the other day on archive and I was like WOW what sound. My buddy and I were at my house and we were like why couldnt all the Dick's picks have this sound quality when they were SBD shows too. Then I read the notes and see that the show was remastered by Rob Eaton in '99. Being fairly new to DSO--1st show Chicago 1-2011, I was unfamiliar with Rob's work with the Dead. Ive downloaded many DSO shows from livedownloads and was amazed at the quality of the sound. I attibuted it to the new recording eq, but after searching Rob Eaton at Archive.org, I started listening to some 69 shows he had remastered and the sound quality was amazing, not to mention to his perfect 77 remasters. Many of the most listened to at archive are Rob's remastering of the analog SBDs and they sound amazing!!
Guest Rob Eaton
As it is I am sending David L a 24 bit master version of my 5/5, 5/7 and 5/8 masters..... Told him he can do with them as he see's fit. No money or credit for me... It's not importantme. I know what I did andthant enough. I would never do this for money... I'm a Dead Head that's all... Forum MVP John A Posted March 6, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 6, 2012 Rob, Did you remaster the DBX decoded Betty Reels of these 3 dates? Or do your recordings differentiate in some other fashion?
Guest Rob Eaton
i did the DBX Decoding myself from those three shows using the K9-122 DBX card that fit in a Dolby A rack. Mastered it all with the most state of the art equipment. The master reels never made it back to the vault but I was fortunate to get a master source to do my work. Forum MVP John A Posted March 6, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 6, 2012 Well the tapes sound great post DBX decode, that's for sure. Nice work, Rob. The original Betty transfers had wispy thin low end.

Did you do the 5/5 in '98? The one 'compiled' by Dan Stephans in '02 or did you do work on this show more recently? Was this the Johnny where Weir slammed into his mic? Guest Rob Eaton
Don't remember when I did it... And yes that 5/5/ is where slammed into the mic on Johnny B Goode. It was one of my favs... He was watching Garcia fan away and forgot he had to sing, he then jumped at the mic almost knocking it over. Garcia was just grinning... It was amazing. Forum MVP Rude Posted March 6, 2012 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 6, 2012 All those may 77 shows you did are fantastic. Did you blend an audience recording with your 5-7-77 SBD? That 77 run you did is so spacial on my surround system, it almost feels like I'm at the show, and then Phil comes in and rattles my bones with the perfect level of bass. Charlie Miller did some awesome work, but these are just a little better in my opinion.
Guest Rob Eaton
No audience matrix on the tapes I did. Quite frankly I don't like them

Forum MVP John A Posted March 7, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 7, 2012 rudedogggg, Yeah, but Charlie Miller didn't have Betty Reels to work with! That said.... Rob, I'm not much of a matrix fan either, as a general rule.
Forum MVP Dstone5553 Posted March 7, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 7, 2012 Rob, I'm not much of a matrix fan either, as a general rule. There are only a few that I like and 99% of the others...not so much. Funnily enough...the one that stands at the top of the matrix mountain is 9/18/87 MSG...mixed by guess who. Forum MVP John A Posted March 8, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 8, 2012 Thread drift, but...Is there a great audience of 9/18/87? The only '87 Garden digital recordings I know of are taper section.
Forum MVP FunkyBass13 Posted March 9, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 9, 2012 I think if I ever got my hands on a remastered recording of 9/18/87, my head would explode before I even got to the Good Lovin'. Its one show I think I am thankful that I have the matrix version of.
Guest Rob Eaton
The Matrix was actually done on the spot by Dan Healy. I've been meaning to dust off that master and do a high resolution transfer of it. We'll see.

It's not like you have anything else going on or anything That one was always one of my favorite Matrix's. It has just the right amount of crowd without too much sacrifice. Seriously > have a blast across the pond! I think you guys are going to open some eyes, drop some jaws, and melt some faces. Safe travels....
