Guest crazy digits
I shared this on my facebook page and thought I would copy it hear. This was the best year of the 3 for me. It gets better every year. I would LOVE to see DSO on the boat again as it felt weird without them...I met Billy K. this year and he seems to love it and hangs with the crowd....peace. Jam Cruise attendees are known as Jamily. The festival on seas can be described in so many ways. It is hard to imagine something/anything as festive as Jam Cruise?? This was my third year in the past 5, having skipped 09' and 11'. Each year it gets better in many ways. What I have come to love is the costuming as each night has both official themes and unofficial themes in which people take very seriously! My favorite theme night is Zebra for sure. Just so happens, the MSC Poesia has a lounge named Zebra. Well, let me tell ya...the lounge has it! All of it and then some. DAZZELing as some would say;) I have never been much up of a dresser upper but it adds to one's experience, for sure..Sparkles, Green, Zebra, Alice and Wonderland, Masquerade and Yacht Club for 2012's ideas..I say ideas because people do what they feel like..no rules....or looking down at folks who might not want to dress. Each year, the costuming gets more elaborate...so cool. There are no taxis to catch, no bar closing, no schedule except for the music schedule...speaking of music, music starts at approx 11 am each days ( except when we were mooring in port ) and doesn't stop until 5 am for those who feel so indulged. The music is INCREDIBLE...the best musical thing I've ever been to, bar none!! That's why we go! Everything that surrounds the music makes the experience EVEN better...Jamily...This was the first year I decided to go when DSO wasn't playing....Here is what I came away with...go see other music...Jam Cruise is a danceathon...amazing music, horns, jazz, rock, folk, bluegrass, you name it, it showed up through all of these talented players...my next door neighbor's were the Dirty Dozen Brass band, a lot of New Orlean's influence on the boat this year...these guys were the nicest guys and players...That's another thing, the musicians, most of them, like to sit in with other bands which makes it so much fun that way. They eat with you in the restaurants, cafeteria ( foods just ok-not picky myself but people complain ), sleep next door, come down to the Jam Room late late night so everyone plays together to include Jam Cruise attendees bring their guitars, banjos, horns to sit in as well...a lot of great players on boat :-) it's all about the music...3000 folks on board..Jam Cruise sells out quickly every year and its easy to understand why...I have always decided last minute to jump aboard this boat last minute to enjoy all of this fun...last minute Jam Cruisers end up with new friends as they normally have a roommate they do not know. My roommate this year was Mike who deserves a big thanks from me for allowing me to join him as his roommate for this year. THANKS MIKE!! The one drawback for me this year was the stops Jam Cruise made ( Haiti and Jamaica ) With Haiti's concerns, we were relegated to a compound for out excursions and such which may include ziplining, snorkeling etc. Jamaica , not my favorite either...I like to go to places where you can do what you want and feel safe, explore the countryside etc; Never mind though because that is not what you're coming for..it's the music! The band The New Mastersounds were without a doubt my most favorite aboard this year and it is mighty difficult picking out the best music. They are from England but do a lot of touring in the states. They are funny ( talk to the crowd a bit ) and very detailed...During their second show ( each band usually plays twice ), Ivan Neville sat in with the New Mastersounds along with Anders Osborne, at different times...awesome!!! BTW, Jamily is the paid attendees AND the musicians! One big happy Jamily....a great event and which I may do again next year...which would be my first back to back Jam Cruises.....anyone want to come along? Saw Anders Osborne at a festival in Minnesota ... DSO at the same festival ... goodness it must have been 10 plus years ago .... I would have to check the setlist page for that one ....
