and don't forget 4 minutes of total bliss (mind left body jam):

and a wonderful segue into truckin (whistle et al), actually this is nice little 2nd set, reminds me more of '82

In listening to several tracks from this show, mostly the Jerry tunes, I am reminded how relatively quickly Jerry's lifestyle choices eroded his musical ability and sensibility. He sounds zonked to me in this show. A mere 5 years earlier, at the closing of the Winterland, he was still on top of his game. Sad.

My first show was Spring '83 (either Hartford or New Haven, I forget). I really wish I could have caught a show in the 70's.

My humble opinion, of course.

^^

It's not a smart call to pick one show and generalize anything about anything in my opinion, especially when it comes to Garcia.

I defended Dave's statement about there being more consistent shows from '77 when compared to '83 but I also mentioned something about cows.

Please listen to this post space, just two days before (and loudly).

I like 83. I like all Grateful Dead. Some of it I enjoy more than others but it's all Jerry. My personal favorite Dead is 69-78....to me, during this time span, they were at their musical peak. Always changing, evolving, and playing on the cutting edge. The early 80s come off a little sloppy, Jerry clearly using heavily, and sometimes, for parts of shows, his playing lacks a connectedness to the music. That being said there are many fire moments. And the music itself started to carry more weight as the years went by.....not as fluid and pyschedelic as a long winding other one sandwich from 73, or as tight energetic and funky as a Dancin from 77, but Powerful....like you can feel all the people getting off, the energy of the momentous occasion.

Here in Santa Cruz we hold dead dances, something I hope will spread to more places.  My experiences of dancing the shows from the 90s are no less profound than any other era.

It's easy to believe your opinion and therefore think it the truth. It's easier for all just to say 'my favorite' instead of 'the best.

dont remember seeing this thread last year...i love everything about 1983. it contains so many treats that fly under the radar. it was a year of some big moment breakouts (Help>Slip>Frank, St.Stephen), some firsts (Esau, Revolution, Bucket, WangDang), and some great development of songs (West LA, ThrowingStones, Touch)

you know the year is going to be a special one when they breakout the first Help>Slip>Franklins in 6years : -)

some goodies and rarities all over the place like the summer includes the band's first appearance at Merriweather with 2really strong shows (6.20/21) (really good Sugar Mag) then few shows later their only shows ever at Poplar Creek

the Red Rocks run this yr is great as are the preceding Hult Center shows in Eugene, first time playing there too. im glad people spoke of the Santa Fe shows, the pace of China Rider is amazing, truly one of the fastest ever.. we also have the band's only show ever played in Idaho (9.2 BSU)

the fall tour is amazing, of course the beautiful St.Stephen breakout at the garden, the 2 Hartford shows are amazing (one's a Dick's), followed by a monstrous LakePlacid show (also only time played)

and the final Stephen halloween right at home in Marin, great show

last but not least an extremely tight new years run that including this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez5oslnpc6s an awesome MLB breakout and the only Goodnight Irene they ever played

And don't forget that '83 saw the first use of digital recording by audience tapers.  Goodbye misaligned tape heads, bad Dolby implementation, misplaced tape flips, etc etc.

I can't seem to find soundboards for some select shows in 1983.  Does anyone know if a board of 6.18.83 even exists?  I'm sure the taper-types know something I don't know....
