redeyedbert
This is why I love the grateful dead. I used to ignore 73 and now it is one of my favorite years. I just didn't know. There is so much out there I haven't even discovered yet.
Forum MVP cm_hayden Posted December 16, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted December 16, 2011 I got on the bus in '71, and my subjective (key word) ratings are: 77>72>73>76>71>74>75.
Still Truckin
Twas a pivotal year for those of us in the Big Apple, as the Deads graduated (for better or worse) from lovely venues like the Academy of Music, Fillmore East, Capitol, Stanley, Felt Forum and Manhattan Center to the "big time - Roosevelt Stadium, MSG and the dreaded Nassau Coliseum. If someone was keeping record of where & when the most drug busts happened at Dead shows, I'd be putting my money on Nassau in '73 as No. 1. Why is the music of '73 so special? I can answer that in one word: EYES (73 also introduces Here Comes Sunshine, Wave That Flag, Row Jimmy) But what 73 really means to me is Watkins Glen - the cosmic intersection of my Rock & Roll heroes, the Band, ABB, and the Deads. My dream is to see Watkins recreated in its entirety by DSO, with the best Band and ABB tribute bands (does anyone know who those might be?) Guest L~Cat
When I first found the dead, or it found me 73 was my favorite year to listen to. Good foundation in the "greatest hits". Loved March 73, 6-10-73 classic-epic 3rd set, of course Watkins glen. Each separate year in the 70s had such a distinctive sound, it's hard for me to say I like one over the other. They are all uniquely great.

Forum MVP John A Posted December 19, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted December 19, 2011 The absolute height of Grateful Dead's powers came to a razor sharp peak on May 26th, 1972 as they capped the 4 night run at the Lyceum Theater. One could split hairs and wish that the likes of Stella and Eyes had come a bit earlier and could have been on display here, but that's just, well, splitting hairs. I'll agree that it was definitely one of their peaks. I don't think it's fair to say that it was the one, their music went in a lot of directions after this. I wish we could somehow insert pig into 73 shows...

John, It's been a while since I've been on the forum (I recently moved to Italy), but you make a good point here, as always. The show you referenced is indeed a pinnacle of GD's mucisal prowess (THE pinnacle? Who knows?), which is why DSO should seriously consider playing that one when they re-create one of the Dead's London show's from the Europe '72 tour on March 18th, 2012. I am extremely excited to hang out in London and catch this show while I'm living in Europe.
