Guest L~Cat
jerry garcia band shows are on sugarmegs.com to stream and they are on the bittorrent sites for download, but why are they not on the archive? There is actually one JGB show on there if you dig enough http://www.archive.o...93-11-05Buffalo also- what I noticed was that if you do stream a show on sugarmegs, the URL pops up is actually an archive.org URL. Forum MVP Teacher Matt Posted December 8, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted December 8, 2011 Isn't there some issue with the estate of Jerry Garcia and releasing his material if I am not mistaken ?
Guest L~Cat
well yea- but the thing is, many shows ARE up for streaming and download, just not on archive.....you would think if they were being held in the estate, they wouldn't be available ANYWHERE..... and yes, there are still shows that have yet to make it out l
Advisory Board Herdygerdy Posted December 9, 2011 Advisory Board Report Share Posted December 9, 2011 Just like The Grateful Dead stopped allowing SBD shows to be traded on archive, The Jerry Garcia estate stopped allowing ANY JGB show from being traded on archive... or so I believe... Two words... Deb Koons One word.... Devil

JenL1125
I wish I knew what you guys were talking about! Technology is just not my bag. I don't even understand the words you all are writing. I'm stuck in the land of my old bootlegs, dick's picks, and whatever I can scrape up on itunes (I just got my 1st ipod!). I'm pretty sure I'm missing out on some good stuff here, so if anyone has the patience or the interest to clue me in one day, I'm all ears - but I'm a slow learner:)
Forum MVP anddave Posted December 9, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted December 9, 2011 Exactly. So they are downloadable on bittorrent but not on archive just doesn't seem to make much sense. Here's how it makes sense. Bittorrent does not host the content. It only hosts a traders' index of what's out there in the hands of individuals. When you get a show via bittorrent you are using a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing tool to get the show from other P2P file sharing users who have it, not from a central source. Archive, however, actually hosts the content which exposes it to being told not to do so by the owner/estate. For the same reason there is an endless supply of Phish via P2P but not on archive. For the user, the archive is generallly considered a safer source of download files than P2P networks because P2P tools can contain a wide variety of exploitable vulnerabilities not to mention that individuals can seed anything they want into a P2P network and there's no guarantee its contents are what they claim to be. Forum MVP anddave Posted December 9, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted December 9, 2011 Good question I'm not sure about sugarmegs. I bet you are on target that it's consdered streaming only. Shhhh don't tell anyone your clever download secret. And whatever you do don't try to use that kind of thinking to download the mp3s of sbd shows from the archive cuz that would be bad, mmm kay? I don't think its a secret because it has a link to "download" next to each show....unless that just really means stream. I just don't see a difference in streaming from sugarmegs vs stream only on archive. I just prefer archive for streaming. I have many of the shows on my hard drive but I need to take some serious time to convert them, figure out which ones are of good quality, etc.
