Obviously Donna lent lots to this song, and by Europe '72 I would call it "fully mature." In fact, if you have access to the Europe set pay close attention to the version from Bickershaw, particularly Garcia's solo and the 2nd pass through verse two after the solo. Beyond epic.

Agreed.

The drawl on Garcia's vocal when he's explaining the protagonist telling the choir about a song his momma sang....holy crapcakes.

I'm really not sure how a man can become the song like Mr. Garcia can become the song, but this version is dripping with grease.

You gotta turn it up REAL loud for moments like these though.

Or you're just doing a big disservice to music in general.

one of the many things that hooked me long ago was BLASTING "make my old memories......" he made songs personal like nobody before or since

just tried to listen to the Bickershaw Sing me back home..

and apparently all of the europe 72 shows have been completely disabled on the archive. can't even stream them.. AARRGGH! Hope you box set owners are happy :P

Also, please substitute 'protagonist' for antagonist (I always picture Merle himself).
