Mason's Children

Yep, it does seem like neither rhyme nor reason to these things. I do remember a Phil and Friends show in Denver some years ago where they played it. Hearing it live was very cool after a lifetime of only on disks or tapes.

Funny this topic was offered up, as I was just last night listening to the fine elective show from 5/28/10 in Hampton Beach, which includes a great version of Mason's Children, and I was asking myself the same question. Why, oh why? The vocal harmonies can be so sweet....

I think there may actually be a discussion as to why this song was dropped in Long Strange Trip by Dennis McNally. If I can remember to do so, I'll see what I can find in the text (gotta love indices!).

one of the most underrated songs in my opinion and only played a handful of times in the earlier years... he was a friend of mine

I love Jerry's vocals on He was a Friend of Mine on anyone I've ever heard. That first solo is usually a smoker too. The song kind of reminds of the Death Don'ts of the times, a slow song that Jerry just shreds the center of.

The first time I heard He Was A Friend of Mine was last year, DSO in Covington. I had never heard the song from the Grateful Dead. I've got 3-4 versions now though I don't know exactly where they all are. Its a great song.
