anotherjackstraw
Monterey Furthur was fun. It was like an old Grateful Dead show, old faces you had'nt seen in years popping up around every corner. Phil can still do it and was the highlight of the night (other than JOhn of course) .His bass was Fing booming and he was laying down some nasty shit! Jawdropping stuff. I cant ever hear the bass like that at a Dso show (??) John's style is changing tour to tour it would seem , he is really developing his own style and is better than ever. The songs were fresh and funky ,, with a lot of them carrying new arrangements. Bob looks like a wolf but can still play the guitar better than any rhythm guitarist alive! They have played a ton of shows in the short time they have been together and looks like will play a ton more.

You post the same topic twice just to add the line "I cant ever hear the bass like that at a Dso show (??)" Curious. Kevin is of course not Philip but if you are not hearing absolute sickness from Kevin's bass then you need to get a hearing test. You suggest to yourself in another recent post that you are not sold on JM just yet and that you should just go see more shows. Sage advice. To me, Furthur is Furthur and DSO is DSO. It's like: Do you want $1000 in 100's or 50's. Both get you paid differently.
SeanAY
I'll take the analogy one step further: they're not even the same type of band. That they both play Grateful Dead music is the only similarity. Furthur focuses on kooky, interesting arrangements, unique setlists, and more jazz-tinged jamming. But they don't always sound like the Grateful Dead. All those things are awesome, in my opinion. DSO recreates the sound of the Grateful Dead like no one else. The arrangements and tone are very, very similar to the way songs/shows were played many years ago. They have amazing energy and are all excellent musicians. All those things are awesome, in my opinion. There's no "either/or." There's "and."
