The El Rey sucks .... the 3 major reasons I did not go see DSO in So Cal this weekend

1. El Rey sucks

2.and I was not on the guest list to the birthday party show 2nite (check out photos on facebook of Curfew ) ... I admit I am jealous ..

3. no 3 shows in a row .. ie Thur, Fri, Sat .... or Fri, Sat, Sun.

but who am I .... just Teacher Matt ...

Hearing the clamor for a review, here is my missive.

After making a bundle on Delilah Jones in the second race at Fairplex Park in the afternoon I made my first foray to the El Ray Friday night. Not as packed on the floor as at the Belly Up San Diego. No complaints with the venue. Overall the energy in the audience was about average, maybe slightly above, for the SoCal shows I have seen. (Disclaimer: I have only seen SoCal shows.)

Seeing Rob B miked up suggested an 80s show, which came to pass. The Sugar Mag opener was sweet, but the Sugaree that followed was the highlight of the show, taking twists and turns that left my mandible on the floor. Tons of Steel had Rob B bringing it hard, TJed was fun, and Let it Grow jammed hard, but I expected the SSDD to close the set but realized it would likely close the second set.

Touch was a fun start to Set 2, LLR had me reminiscing the GD version at the Swing Auditorium in 1979, He's Gone was beautiful, D/S Wheel pretty standard, TOO brought an incredible jam between stanzas, I always love the Wharf Rat and the SSDD was a wonderful ending, with an absolutely rocking Iko to finish the recreation.

Lisa on the harmonica on the filler (Let it Rock) helped fill the void I feel when she is not part of the main act. Wonderful way to send the crowed into the night.

Since this was their first foray to SoCal in nearly a year, I need more than two days' recovery time. Have to pass on Ventura, but looking forward to Tuesday at the recently refurbished Yost Theater in Santa Ana. The sound system at the Yost is reportedly first-rate, so-say the techno rockers. Hopefully Starheads can help support this OC show better than the woeful turnout at the oversized Grove last fall.

Overall the show was another incredible experience enjoying incredinble musicians who truly enjoy sharing their music and who interact seamlessly to present the music of the good old Grateful Dead.
