Forum MVP Tea Posted September 14, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 14, 2011 The best Bertha ever thread spawned this one - I hope I do not create 'Best Ever' fatigue for any of you. There are so many good ones but I will throw a few out there that are on my radar (Remember Best Franlikns NOT tied to Help>Slip): Alligator Alley Gymnasium, U of Florida on 1980-11-29 http://www.archive.org/details/gd80-11-29.wise.sacks.2409.sbeok.shnf The Shakedown>Franklins is epic Lindley Meadows - Golden Gate Park on 1975-09-28 http://www.archive.org/details/gd1975-09-28.fob.menke-falanga.motb-0069.91770.flac24 Raw Power Here Winterland Arena on 1977-03-19 http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-03-19.sbd.chinacat.255.sbeok.shnf Eyes Of The World-> Dancin' In The Streets-> Wharf Rat-> Franklin's Tower-> Sugar Magnolia....EEEEK! Red Rocks Amphitheatre on 1978-07-08 http://www.archive.org/details/gd78-07-08.sbd.unknown.294.sbeok.shnf Similar combo to Winterland above....sooooo good. The Spectrum on 1987-03-31 http://www.archive.org/details/gd87-03-31.fm.miller.21267.sbeok.shnf Jack Straw>Franklins in pure energy. Sentimental Entry. Hampton Coliseum on 1988-03-28 http://www.archive.org/details/gd1988-03-28.sbd.miller.91233.sbeok.flac16 Another Sentimental Entry I look forward to some other suggestions so I can go and find those - Not opposed to more 81-89, I just love these. Did the GD do a stand-alone Franklins after 89-90? Would love to zero-in on any shows where this occurred.
Forum MVP John A Posted September 14, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 14, 2011 Cape Cod 10/27/79 is a barn burner (out of Dancin'). I also love Baltimore 4/19/82, but perhaps more for the greatness of the Stranger->Franklin's combo than the Franklin's itself. Love that transition. Oh how could I have forgotten the Cape Cod show.....DUH! That one is sweetness. I think that 4/19/82 show was the one with 'The Raven' Space, right? Screwball Stuff....they were feelin it that nite. Forum MVP John A Posted September 15, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 15, 2011 Here's another trivia quesiton... What version stands as the longest Franks of all times? I have no clue, but I recall Buffalo '77 being pretty chunky. But the answer could well be something from '94-'95, where certain songs were really extended in length. Mind you, nothing of interest happened in most of these later day marathons, just endless Garcia meandering. Although I'm thinking more of stuff like Eyes and Fire. I mean, '94/5 could deliver a close to 30 minute Eyes where nothing interesting took place whatsoever.

'94 had some of the longest Deals ever I think--that 4/27/94 show with the big Dew had a real long Deal...not sure if it was the longest but it's up there. But the longest Franklins came in the year where the best of 'em came, which is just how it should be. 11/2/79 Buffalo....a 1/2 Step>Franks to open the show. We've timed them to the second. Forum MVP Tea Posted September 15, 2011 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 15, 2011 Does anyone know when the last stand-alone Franklins was ever played played by the GD? I don't have a deadbase, but I would venture to guess it was Fall or Winter of 1989. I would love to find one later than this if it exists. Whoose got the knowledge? Forum MVP John A Posted September 15, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 15, 2011 When Help->Slip came back at the Hampton Warlocks they never played a stand alone Franklin's again. I hadn't realized that. So the last one was at Shoreline out of Stranger. 9/29/89. Same show as the Death Don't bust out.

Yeah...when they brought it back for the second time at Hampton, Franks was always after the Help>Slip. The only exception was the Help>Slip>Fire at Boston Garden in 1991 (9/20?). Everyone wonders when it would have gone away again.

Forum MVP Tea Posted September 16, 2011 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 16, 2011 4.10.78 preceding the best Peter ever 4.10.78 is rip roarin fun. Legendary Franklins, a sweet Pete to be sure, and a trainwreck MNS that gave the band quite a chuckle. The band was in freaking overdrive for Spring 78. I remember those 78' shows being hinged upon whether Keith was gonna show up or not...BUT when he did the shows rocked because the rest of the band was generally having a good time and playing well...It's amazing how loosey goosey they had become in comparison to 76'.... Forum MVP John A Posted September 18, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 18, 2011 I remember those 78' shows being hinged upon whether Keith was gonna show up or not... As I work my way through the Europe '72 tour, I'll note this was NOT a problem then. Wow was Keith awesome! Was the turning point as '77 worked its way into '78? Was the turning point as '77 worked its way into '78? I think that is fair to say...He was more consistently good in 77' but he definitely was on the decline...and 78' was truly hit or miss with Keith...but in my mind all the great 78 shows were when Keith was on...There are some embarrassing moments for sure where he would be a full measure ahead or behind the rest of the band and took way too long to figure out...or he just flat out was barely playing...Still my favorite GD keys player...He was flat out amazing from 72-74! Try to get to the point where you are getting it right on the first try or at the very worst...the second.

I just knew I was paying the price for being a lazy fuck, but now I have quantitative proof rather than mere anecdotal evidence. I feel better about my inadequacies already! Forum MVP John A Posted September 19, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 19, 2011 Uhh, you know your on the internet, right?? http://www.deadbase.com/ True, but the online version would not provide an easy answer to Tea's original query - i.e. when was the last stand alone Franklin's. For that you need the print edition.

Just be thankful you don't have to live with me. I saw shows during that time (or some such time). The print edition comes in very handy, since the self-induced Alzheimers is getting advanced.
