Forum MVP John A Posted September 13, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 13, 2011 Oh for the love of god - a quick spot check of "Eyes" reveals, on the list of "best versions ever", 2 from '92, 4 from '93, 6 from '94, and 1 from '95. Who knew that its glory days were post-Brent?

Who knew that its glory days were post-Brent? right. I was cracking up....I think there are probably a consistent 15 people using this and they seem to only ever mention a handful of shows. Forum MVP Dstone5553 Posted September 13, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted September 13, 2011 I remember this site from years ago...I like it. Like John said, a quick check will reveal some startling choices and glaring omissions but how cool would it be if 5 thousand serious Grateful Dead fans went through this thing for 30 minutes during some downtime at work? Then you would have something. The problem with stuff like this is that it's usually about the recordings themselves as much as the performance. That's a big reason why almost all the songs from 5/8/77 have always been ranked so high on any favorites list in the past (e.g. Deadbase I). Sure it's a great show, but it's the recording itself that has gone a long way in making it what it is. The gorgeous Betty Board combined with the stellar play made it the most owned tape in the history of tapes as well, and therefore those songs dominated all lists. Not completely fair to the other shows but now that we have archive et al. the whole favorites thing is more just. It's still prejudicial because now it's the official releases that people listen to, so versions from Dick's Picks or whatever will have the advantage that Cornell had in the olden days (you youngsters will just have to take my word for it). I guess that people listen to the GD station too but my bet is that for a lot of the time, one doesn't know or remember what show the songs they heard came from, but I could be wrong about that. But I should give this link to a serious GD download site or two to let those good people, who listen to everything, have their voices be heard. I think that would seriously professional this thing. But like I said...I like it!
