Forum MVP Supplicated Velvet Thunder Posted July 18, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 18, 2011 hmmmmm ok, so the above picture is a hat pin that I just saw on facebook for sale, and it made me puke a little bit in my mouth..... so it got me to thinking about something i've thought about before, but now i'm curious as to what the rest of you might say.... is there lot art that you remember that you REALLY LOVED or REALLY HATED? seems like sometimes artists just really get it just RIGHT, and sometimes what comes out is silly or just offensive to some people. we have friends who were very seriously threatened about certain Furthur hat pins they made, and i'm sure their experience is not unique. (we LOVED their pins lol) it seems that some of the best work lately has really blended the whole fractal, sacred geometry visuals with traditional Dead iconography, and that stuff is really beautiful. upgrades in computers have brought a whole new dimension into play as well, and I know there is a lot of competition amongst poster makers over who uses "graphics programs" and who "draws their own" and it is interesting to watch this evolve and work itself out. what are your thoughts on the evolution of lot art and some of your favorites or most despised works? after all, this is the stuff that in many ways represents each generation of concert goers and leaves a tangible mark on the history of the music. Forum MVP cm_hayden Posted July 18, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 18, 2011 The art I remember (70's) centered around T-shirts, jewelry (Robb's wings),and Mountain on the Moon clothing. Nothing outstanding comes to mind as of the moment.
Guest jazz-man
At one of the Furthur Festival shows at Shoreline I traded a ticket for a batik wall hanging of the world (ocean is blue, land is green) and I love it! I had it framed and it is the centerpiece in my house ever since.

sgrmag2564
Funny you bring this up now. In my town, Norfolk, VA, there was a guy who had a couple Graffitti artists paint his white wall with grafitti type art. The people in the neighborhood had mixed feelings about it and the man wound up painting over it. I think art is something each person views differently. I went to see a Picaso exhibit a couple months ago, and I was not too impressed. I kinda like the older impressionist stuff from the late 1800's. The "lot art" that stands out to me is in the early 80's. I remember seeing my first spiral type tie dye and thought it was just beautiful. Now you can pick them up in just about any discount clothing store, but the best ones are made individually by artists. I really liked the leatherwork too. Every show I went to I picked up some little trinket from the lot art folks, if only to support their cause. Funny, I don't know where any of those things are now. I must have lost them along the way, but I wish I had that leather steely I bought back in the 80's. It was way cool!! Peace, Joe
