Guest Papaphunk
1/21/79, Masonic Temple, Detroit MI ( back to Back ) Liked the first nite a lil better but great show as well. The first night kept me thinking with the Loser Estimated Other One........thought it was Buffalo 79' which I have a great recording of .. and one you wouldn't forget..awesome show.....even a bilnd squirrel gets a nut every once in a while :-) Thanks to the many friends of the weekend and to my golfing buddies as well...That was a great course ( Baywood Greens ) My wife and I were down at Bethany Beach this past week for vacation, scouted around and looky looky, DSO is playing 2 nites at the tail end of our week just up the road......As we have 2 kids, my wife took the first nite out, then we swapped and I got nite 2. As the set started there was word being spread around us that nite 2 might be an interpretation of the Epic Englishtown 77 show.....I got settled in around BIODTL (which I later found out to be halfway through the first set....and also not englishtown 77 lol)......but took in the vibe of the crowd, open air scene of this space and the many bars surrounding the perimeter. Scored a nice spot in the middle of the floor, and enjoyed the looks like rain tremoundously, knowing this was going to be a very fun nite ! Music never stopped was a nice rocking version that went places, thinking the set would end then....but no, up pops Deal to close things out. As I was solo, duing setbreak I bounced around the insides, and outside of the cork (great chill re-entry policy) and made some new friends along the way......Second set featured a very nice triple combo to set things off....Powerful skin play opening of the Samson got the crowd grooving.....then terrapin (always, one of my favs....) Inspiration.....everyone's hands in the air singing along..........into the most spaced out ambient Playing jam I've ever been a witness too, it went out there.....and kept going. Funny this venue draws a lot of shall we say muscular dudes from the beach, as well as a healthy mix of true heads that were spinning freely during playing, quite a scene. The version of Stella Blue the band performed post drums and space was truely otherworldly, it almost brought me to tears. I closed my eyes and was transported from a meat market bar off the beach, to a place far away and I liked it. US Blues encore got everyone worked up into a nice fun frenzy, and the 4 song filler selections (Mr. Charlie, and older pair of tunes I had never heard before, and I thought I'd heard them all, St. Stephen !!!!!!!!, and Brothers and Sisters) was a very fine topping to the nite. Vibes were great, band was rocking and having a good time, and the audience was really into it. Nice of the band to bring the promised land sandwich full circle from the opener the nite before, to take me to the promised land, we've got to love one another. Nice way to bring things full circle. I hear DSO tries to play here on the weekend in Dewey beach on the weekend every year, so next year we may actually plan for it ! (only bummer is, there is absolutley no parking around the cork. Wife and I both came home with a $30 parking ticket each, as all the permit parking meters around the venue run until midnite). But besides that, it was a blast !!!!
