Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Review State Bridge

Yeah. State Bridge..... what to say that can even come close to describing how amazing our weekend was, I don't know, but I will try.

The fact that I am not writing this review until Tuesday afternoon is a testament to the epically perfect weekend we had.

We wanted to go to Boulder Friday night, and started packing to go when one thing after another kept us at the house, but we got it together and left the house early Saturday morning to get to State Bridge as soon as we could. We've never been (as it just reopened and we just moved to CO) and we didn't know what to expect, so we showed up with only half the booth (still kicking myself for not bringing our rocks to soak up THAT energy!) and much too little water, expecting to only see the show and go home or at least just camp for one night.

But when we got there we fell in love immediately, made instant friends to set up shakedown with, and raged Grateful Dead at the booth the next 48 hours, whether it was playing with friends or thru sirius/mp3s. Hands down without a DOUBT our favorite place we have EVER BEEN for a show, period.

AND THEN the band took the stage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We showed up in front completely unprepared to take setlist (usually use phones, which don't work there so weren't charged) and absolutely regret it and will not show up to see the RMGDR without paper and pen ever again, and we will be there to see them anytime they play that we possibly can. The energy was phenomenal, the music blew us away, Jon had to walk away from the front just before Crazy Fingers, because the music was ripping our souls out of our faces and rearranging our mind frames to rapidly for us to handle, but we made it back by the perfectly timed Drums/Space TRAIN (mountains: check, river: check, TRAIN: HELL YEAH, CHECK!). The first set Playin sandwich with the Other One was perfectly on point and groovy. The Music Never Stopped>Sugaree>Music Never Stopped was incredibly sexy and vibrantly funky, dudes crowded into the front to get closer to the beautiful diva singing, everyone was completely floored, the girls in the front were practically ripping their clothes off, everyone could feel it. The Wharf Rat was solid and moving..... and Jon was especially pleased with the NFA>Who do you Love>NFA, especially with Eaton's Morrison reference earlier in the set that we're not sure many picked up on.... Good stuff. And as we wanted soooo badly (Eaton does the BEST Throwing Stones!), the Throwing Stones just blew State Bridge to the next dimension and when we went back to camp there was NO WAY we were gonna get any sleep, so we just played music at various fires 'til dawn and then got ready to go see the DAY SET!!!!!!!!

3 sets over 2 days for $15 ea plus $5 fee plus $10 camping, CANNOT BEAT THAT DEAL!!!!!!!!!! By the time we heard Might As Well wafting up to camp from the stage, we started running for the shuttle, and got there as they really started. The front area was empty except for some adorable kids playing in the sand, but when the shuttle let out the group of young dead fans we'd gathered over the last 24 hours rushed to the front, I think I was the ONLY ONE that noticed that we had invaded the kids play area, but MAN, there was DEAD on stage and we couldn't help ourselves! Jon was in especially fine form, dancing harder than he has in a long time there in the center of the kids sand holes, shovels, and sand piles, but what do you expect, we'd been up all night! Especially AWESOME was the Let it Rock, it had been quite a minute. And the Touch of Grey at the end sent us back to camp to go rage more Dead with exuberant smiles on our faces. Didn't have tix for Leftover Salmon, so we just listened to the '74 Atlanta Omni show on Sirius since there was NO WAY we were gonna go home yet, and Jerry and the moon, clouds, river and mountains sang/showed me the most beautiful China Doll I have ever heard, and State Bridge stole our hearts.

We didn't want to leave, we will be back as soon as possible (this is our new weekend home for the summer, aside from Gratefulfest weekend and a few others). We have never been so in love with a venue. I think we're gonna get married there.

Can't wait til August when DSO plays there, it's gonna be one of our fave shows of the summer, I can feel it! :)

Thank you State Bridge, for re-opening, thank you Eaton for playing there so we would get up off our asses and go, and thank you everyone who was there for making it exactly what such things should be.

If you had ANY DOUBT about whether you should come see this band, or if you should come see DSO at State Bridge in August, let me cast them aside and tell you to do whatever you have to to come experience quality Dead music in this cosmic venue, you won't regret it. I'm about to email the venue and Eagle County right now to get our vending license for the county and see if we can set up our rocks inside the venue whenever there is Dead playing so our rocks can soak up that energy..... wow.

Just beautiful to hear you guys got your eggs poached, deviled, srambled, and maybe a little fried by the RMGDR.

Being a previous resident of Boulder and spending more time outside than inside around that area, I have to imagine it was a perfect confluence of great surroundings, great people, great vibes, and we all know great music! You guys are some lucky duckies and I am glad you had such a wonderful time in such a wonderful place. Thanks for regailing us!
