Wakarusa Festival

I just got the most delightful call from a good friend who is at Wakarusa.... and he just showed so much enthusiasm for seeing DSO at his first festival (he's seen DSO before, but never been to a fest) that I had to post. He called, Jon answered, and I watched Jon begin laughing as our buddy explained that he was at Waka, and DSO played last night, and he was there, and it was AMAZING. He was saying something about them playing Johnny B. Goode twice (indicating that he quite definitely had his face stolen) and that it started out as a 71 show, and then was a 76 (also, presumably, indicating that he was having trouble realizing who, where and when he was) but that he had the best time of his life and he understands now why we don't wanna do anything but see this band play. He was so excited, Jon handed the phone to me so I could hear his rambling good vibes, and it was freaking awesome.

So, thanks, guys, for blowing my friend's head into another universe so that he could call us and share the love. If he couldn't relate reliable details, at least he could relate the infectiously energized atmosphere ya'll carry 'round.

Reliable real-time sources led me to believe it was 11 11 71 Atlanta Municipal Auditorium.

Filler: Easy Wind

I hope DSO played out this show for a bit longer than Jerry and the boys did this nite in 1971. The original was for the most part doomed before it started. It appears that the police presence was overwhelming and that vibe made its way to the band right from the get-go. Having listened to this original before, it was evident that the band tried to move on through this at a break-neck pace (not one song crossed the 10-minute mark!?!). Too bad really because the band was really feelin it around this time. Just ask the folks that took in the shows at TCU and Austin a few nites later and the Harding Theatre show a few days prior (11/7). These were some of the best 1971 had to offer.

From the limited accounts it looks like DSO brought their usual heat to the delight of many. Here is the original setlist:

Bertha, Me & My Uncle, Sugaree, Playin' In The Band, Tennessee Jed, Jack Straw, Casey Jones, Me And Bobby McGee, Big Railroad Blues, Mexicali Blues, One More Saturday Night, Truckin', Sugar Magnolia, Not Fade Away-> Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad-> Not Fade Away, E: Johnny B. Goode

Those of you lucky enough to see the Rocky Mountain Grateful Dead Revue on 6/10 + 6/11 are in for some good stuff and no doubt, good times.

I'm gonna guess my friend felt the Johnny B. Goode vibe during OMSN... totally wish we'd been there!

Our buddy called now that he is home to tell us DSO was the best act of the weekend (along with STS9, because I think that's who he went to see) and that all he wants to do is go to festivals now and go see DSO as much as possible. So after a brief discussion after hanging up, we called him back and told him about Gratefulfest (we find ourselves being VERY selective about who we even say the name of this festival to, because it's the best and it is that way because people treat it that way) and when he heard it was DSO for three nights, with the unbeatable price tag, he said he would call his mom right away to arrange his other summer plans around it..........

DSO, you hook people for life everywhere you go!!!! THANK YOU! You always help us and our friends help ourselves :)

THREE WEEKS TIL WE ROLL INTO THE LEDGES (and its gonna take a series of miracles for this to happen, but since it is the ONLY festival we will NEVER miss, we are jubilant knowing it is nearly upon us, though the path there is still a bit hazy). Can't wait to pack the car for the road again, we've been at home tooooo long.

MISS YA'LL!!!!!!!!

Filler: Easy Wind

Actually, the filler was Easy Wind ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Mr. Charlie ; Ramble On Rose ; Greatest Story Ever Told ; Hard To Handle ; Let It Rock ; Cumberland Blues We had a lot of extra time. Originally we were told a 3 hour set and it is why we picked this particular show(being Rob K couldn't be there) It was big fun!! RB

Holy Third-Set, Batman!! Well done!

Also, with the exception of Let it Rock, nice way to keep that third set in the pre 72 area as well!! Love me some Mattson Let it Rock, too!! :)

I heard STS9 covered "Shakedown".

I've never seen them live...not sure if it's my cup of 'tea'

Wish I coulda seen the band I gave so much money to before I liked the Dead because of DSO play Shakedown at Waka!!! I wouldn't be so sad at them. It's prolly not your cup of tea. The music is good sometimes, but the crowd is just AWFUL. Gangsta ravers, but the girls dress hot :)
