Guest Lisacat
Well felt my first one today while sitting in a meeting at work! 3.8. Big enough to startle and get people out of their chairs, small enough no harm done. What is interesting is that it comes 105 years to the date after the Great 1906 Quake in San Francisco http://abclocal.go.c...tate&id=8080139 I guess the universe wanted to share in the memorial! (and this so does not have ANY thing to do with DSO but thought I'd share). Wonder if its a precurser to something bigger we will see soon....according to the predictions we were supposed to have a big one the end of last month. A word to the wise from a Bay Area native: NEVER listen to the "experts" and completely ignore their predictions. Yes, there will eventually be another large earthquake in the region. However, they have no clue as to when it will hit. I don't know what I geard more growing up, either the Russians are going to bomb us or CA is going to fall into the ocean due to an earthquake. I was going to put "predictions" in quotemarks. If they were able to predict, we wouldn't have nearly as much tragedy on our hands as we do now with Japan. With that said, even for just a 3.8 it certainly disrupted (and ended) our meeting! Now to see if my pictures are still on the shelves. I'm pretty sure they will be. Forum MVP Dstone5553 Posted April 19, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 19, 2011 I felt it while in the library and barely looked up long enough to the person in front of me, who gave me the look as if to say, "You're not on acid...I felt it too." I dwell the Northeast... the place least susceptible. I'd like to an experience a small earthquake... just to have that nice reminder that the ground under our feet is not permanent. California must reevaluate their reactors and learn from what has happened in Japan. It is inevitable that an Earthquake of that magnitude hits under the West Coast in the next few decades... Forum MVP John A Posted April 19, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 19, 2011 Didn't feel it today nor did co-workers. And we're 2nd floor on the edge of the original waterline/landfill near the Embarcadero!
Guest Lisacat
Didn't feel it today nor did co-workers. And we're 2nd floor on the edge of the original waterline/landfill near the Embarcadero! wow! funny how that works...the way we felt it I can't imagine NOT feeling it! My colleague who is a california native said she was actually surprised when she saw it was only a 3.8..... I just thought a giant file cabinet fell right above us. Then we all kind of looked at eachother and realized it was an earthquake. It was also a giveaway when our colleague on the phone who was working from home let out a little "whoa" the same time we did. and now that I think about it- its pretty funny because right before it happened her dogs started going crazy and you could hear them barking and carrying on over the phone. Animals always know before us!
redeyedbert
I came to work today, set up my ipod speakers and decided 1990. As I was scrolling through shows and I saw California Earthquake from Charlotte, 1989. I don't have the whole show on my ipod. I listened to it twice to get my day going. 2 hours later I log onto DSO forums and see this post. Wierd.
neutrino
I was working in Pacifica--essentially right on the epicenter. I definitely felt it!!! Was kind of odd, as it was mostly just one huge jolt, instead of the usual rocking for at least a few seconds. The one jolt was pretty impressive. Almost felt like a large truck had run into the building. Shortly afterwards, all the power in the city went out for a few hours.
Forum MVP FunkyBass13 Posted April 20, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 20, 2011 My experience with Bay Area earthquakes is this: 1) If it originates from southwest of SF, like this one, it typically is a big jolt. Personally, I kind of like these as they certainly get your attention. 2) If it originates from the southeast, it typically is of the "rolling" variety, like Loma Prieta in '89. These are my favorites because you can literally feel the ground act like a wave below your feet. So cool. But what I really love is being with someone as they experience their first quake. No matter what people say in advance, nothing really prepares you for it and I can certainly understand how it can be a bit scary. Trust me, in another 5 years, someone will mention a 3.8 and you will roll your eyes and say something along the lines of "that's not a quake, that's a big truck". I love earthquakes, if you couldn't tell.
Forum MVP Michael Doc Watson Posted April 20, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted April 20, 2011 ...her dogs started going crazy .... Animals always know before us! I've read eslewhere that many animals apparently can sense the earthquake before us humans are aware. There are many examples of birds, pets, farm animals, etc getting excited prior to our feeling the vibs. Here's an interesting web site that lists all sorts of data about quakes around the world. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php Peace, Love, and a Rocking Dace Floor for Al, Doc
