The Rock Band Draft

SeanAY

Recommended Posts

So not too long ago, I was listening to pop culture gadfly Chuck Klosterman talking about "rock band drafts" he and his friends would have, with the goal being who could come up with the "best" band based on musical ability, tour attendance/album sales, CHEMISTRY, etc. Whatever criteria you'd want to judge a band on being successful. Anyway, given the eclectic and informed crowd on this forum, I'd like to give it a shot.

The Rules:

  • You will pick your band on a round-by-round basis, and it will have no more than five members:
    • One drummer
    • One bassist
    • One guitarist
    • One vocalist
    • One wildcard (your choice: you could add another guitarist, vocalist, keyboardist, etc.)

[*]You are NOT allowed to have more than one member from any one band in yours (for example, no Jerry and Bobby, no Phil and JK, etc. Might get tough when you start considering incarnations of P&L and such, but that's what makes it fun)[*]Once someone is selected, they are off the board![*]This is a big one: the person you select for a position will ONLY perform at that position. For example, you can take Jerry as a guitarist but NOT also as a vocalist, and vice versa. You need to choose where you think they fit in better![*]Solo artists that are just singers/dancers and not part of a band not eligible (Sorry, Michael Jackson fans).[*]Per Klosterman's rule: Hendrix is off the board. No one can take Hendrix.[*]Per MY rule: Let's make it really interesting. Jerry is off the board. No one can take Jerry, because anyone with half a brain takes Jerry first overall, and then everyone else gets bummed because they didn't get Jerry. Let's make it interesting!

First seven people to respond and say they're interested get to play (in order to not make it too unwieldy). We'll commence then!

...and then we'll repackage all those bands and sell them to european investors!

sounds like fun, but why the rulse and limit? I'll pick right now:

Guitar - Mark Knopfler

Vocal - Warren Haynes

Bass - Jaco Pastorius

Drums - Joe Russo

Wildcard - Christopher Guest

:D

In order to meet all the requirements, I had to go Jazz sounding:

Guitar - Al DiMeola

Vocal - Peter Gabriel (biggest stretch in this line up, but would be cool).

Bass - Jaco Pastorius (idea borrowed from anddave but I totally agree).

Drums - Steve Gadd

Wild card - Joni Mitchell (backup female vocalist - jazz experienced)

The combo vocals of Gabriel and Mitchell would be very interesting. Gabriel had a female vocalist on a number of tours -> paula cole.

OK, guess the whole draft thing is out the window...lol...whatever, I can live with it!

This whole process is TORTURING me! I think I'm going with a kickass blues band, I don't know, it seems like it fits.

Guitarist: Dan Auerbach

Drummer: John Bonham

Bassist: Jack Casady

Vocalist: Jesse Henry

Wildcard: Keith Richards (2nd guitar)

I've got one dead guy (Bonham) and another guy from a relatively unknown band (Henry, from the Spikedrivers - coming to Gratefulfest 12!), but I'm sticking with it. I tells ya, I saw the Spikedrivers in Kalamazoo not long ago and was convinced this guy was a combination of Joe Cocker and Dr. John. He just had that "funk" to him, if you catch my drift! Check out the Spikedrivers if you get the chance!

Remembered watching Carson one night when Rich was a guest. Carson always thought he was a decent drummer. But this night Buddy took a pair of Carson's sticks, a wooden chair and made every drummer I'd heard up to then sound like damn fools.

Guitar: Derek Trucks

Bass: George Porter Jr.

Vocals: Robert Plant

Drums: Keith Moon

Wildcard: Sonny Landreth(slide guitar)

I think my band will be playing a lot of the blues. However, when George and Keith decide to get funky, its ON!!

All I KNOW is that I'm definitely going to whatever festival all these "dream" bands are playing at. Imagine the sit-ins(Bonham and Moon sitting in with Jaco and Les??). Yikes!!!!!!!!

Guitar: John Kadlecik

Vocals: Sade

Bass: Richard Bona

Drums: Bill Krueztmann (circa '70-'74... just a genius player)

Keyboard: John Medeski

Wildcard: Zakir Hussein (on percussion)

I may be breaking the rules as I have a feeling Zakir has played in a past incarnation of Rhythm Devils.

Plus you have 6 musicians.

I feel some responsibility as I broke the biggest rule.

The rule of all rules.

But I figured Anddave set the tone of this thread by just going for it in the first place.

Late to the thread but I'll throw something up here

Garcia

McCartney

Jim Keltner

Herbie Hancock

Ornette Coleman

A little eclectic but I think they would figure it out...

Guitar: Jerry

Bass: Funkybass

Drums: Fishman

Vocal: Katy Perry

Wildcard: me

Ok, so Katy is not really going to get to sing but she's really hot.

The rest is self explanatory.

I'm in. Let me know when Jerry commits and I'll set up my flight for rehearsals ;)
