Filler was Midnight Moonlight with Lisa. Show was originally played on Heather's 9th birthday. If you could only get your hands on one show from DSO this year I'd have to say this is the show to have. There is a jam during Althea that made me tingle. The musicianship from Sugaree, Lost Sailer into Saint then Comes a Time into a SMOKING Other One was the stuff of legend. There was a section of Lost Sailor where we looked over and saw the facial expressions on some of our female friends.....they had the looks of deep satisfaction ;?) I do find it interesting that in a venue where there was plenty of room to dance....all through out the first set it seemed like every drunk douchbag found there way right in front of us. 2nd set we snagged the rail in front of the sound board and protected it like prime grazing land.

Great to see so many old friends in the audience. Tonight is fixing to be fun fun fun.

DSO is playing fantastic don't miss em.

gonna have to look for my jawbone when I get back to the venue tonight because I think I forgot to pick it up after DSO dropped it right out of my head, despite my space pony chin strap holding it in, sometime in the first set, prolly during let it grow. good freakin' grief!

there will NEVER be a show that opens with alabama getaway that I don't love, since that was the first song I ever heard these guys play and was my first true introduction to Grateful Dead, but holy crap, it was smokin right into promised land so I just KNEW that this night was ON! the entire band was glowing with joyous energy (and I was sober!) and it radiated around the entire room from the very beginning. when Eaton dropped a line in el paso (this show was building to break neck speed at this point) he cursed into the mike, before a swift recovery and that was a great moment. love it when the music gets them all wrapped up and you can tell they are barely hanging on themselves as the music explodes thru them. by let it grow i considered strapping my chin it, because they were already stealing my face, but i persevered and held out until second set, only able to keep it together because I knew I would need the help so much more 2nd set if this was the first one. I called my man during althea cause I could tell Jeff was about to really start getting deep into it, and neither of us were disappointed. oh my, and he did that wonderful Jerry growl during this song, that REALLY got me!

I was totally ready for the stranger when they came back on the stage, after telling a girl during set break that the show they were playing seemed too early to have touch of grey in it (which was the 2nd day in a row I had to feel like the bearer of bad news over the same song, when really, the news was GREAT! they can play me anything they feel like playin and I'll be so happy! lol). so I went ahead and strapped my face in just in time for sugaree to start, which Jeff has always blown my mind with... but, um, when he got to that slow part at the end, I swear I could feel the room shifting into paradise. WOW! soooooooo beautiful!

during sailor>saint we were all firmly transported to another world, I love when the do this, and it was particularly tasty. haha, but by the end of saint, these awful rolling kids behind us decided to start trying to spin into our space while doing, um, dubstep dance moves?!?! the one kid is told not to, but then his friend decided to show off and "get the spot" from us for them, so he just jumped in there with his hands up like he was listening to a bassnectar remix of tupac and it was pretty embarrassing to watch. but they were too gone to keep it, so we got the spot back, just to have them dancing on top of us from behind.

that embarrassment for these kids that were obviously way too messed up and not in their element at all QUICKLY turned to HORROR when the band slipped into comes a time, (which I know I am not alone in having a particular affinity for) and as I almost CRIED in joy and confirmation of all that is beautiful to be found in life just before Jeff stepped up to the mike, the second kid that had been trying to show off leans his face between us and screams right at the band as loud as possible "PICK UP THE SPEED ALREADY, GUYS!" and all of us in front turned and looked in outrage and horror, catching each others glances as we turned back to the stage shaking our heads, and all had a special smile after that.... talking during freakin ballads INDEED! The one kid HUGGED his buddy and high fived him when he said this!!! OH MY GOD! lol but it didn't ruin comes a time, the kids shut up because I think they finally noticed some of us were having spiritual communion. mmmmm so amazingly played. called my man for this one, too, since it was this song Friday at Gratefulfest that made us both decide that we were gonna tour DSO asap together. this second set is almost unbelievable in how good it sounded (but not completely because it IS DSO, after all). the other one was dirty and growling and spinning and excitement, so great! wonderful jams from drums into black peter, during which Jeff sounded EXACTLY like Jerry and I danced with my eyes closed, trying hard to keep opening them to watch, sometimes I had to stop dancing and just stare at him because he was just freaking TAKING ME THERE, man!

I will always love around and around (after the show one of the kids behind us said something about the place being rocking and I said "was it going round and round" and he didn't get it, lol) because it is so much fun to dance to, but I flat lost by breath during johnny b goode dancing so hard. gotta love don't ease, was such a good way to bring all our minds back around to some semblance of reality :)

when Lisa came out and they started the filler, I got really stoked cause I've had this song in my head all week and it was the best I've ever heard it played by anyone. (which was the case with many sections of this show!)

oh my, and tonight is just gonna be better? what!?!?! def gonna be prepared tonight :)

BOOM......! Thanks so much for the temporary transport to the show. Your great description also helped me also construct a visual of what it must have looked like in addition to how it obviously felt. BTW - What was the filler they played?

You are gonna get liftoff 2nite and enjoy every second of it.......I can't wait for my turn(s) :)

I posted my first DSO review about 11 years ago when there was a page for DSO in the "Other Bands" section of dead.net. It was Mishawaka up the Poudre river outside of Ft Collins. I believe I used the phrase "I had to take a knee" it was so damn good. Since then I've lost track of how many reviews and how many DSO shows I've seen. So it's 11 years later, some of the faces on stage have changed, but the music, OMFG the music. Jeff Mattson.........(cue Wayne's World theme) I'M NOT WORTHY!! Wholly shit batman can you pick!!! I had 5 that's right 5 laugh out loud moments during the 1st night it was THAT good. There is chemistry in this band and there is something special between Eaton and Mattson it's EEEELECTRIC. Kevin Rosen, his new bass, and a big animated smile. LOVE YOU KEVIN. Rob Barraco...someone get him new keys because he melted them all off in Boulder!!!! What a Drums on Friday as good any by Billy and Mickey. I should say that Aura is showing a propensity for the drums.... Lisa Mackey WHAT PIPES!!! Need I say more?

My only complaint is that DSO doesn't get to Colorado as much as they used to, hope that changes.

Hope to see you sooner rather than later

It's been crazy to witness to sea change regarding DSO on all the message boards. It started out as kind of a sinister hatred from those people who had never seen them...just the concept combined with the rave reviews from others actually seemed to make lots of people irate. It was kind of a barometer for me of sorts...those people who said they hadn't seen them and therefore couldn't speak to what they were like and those people (who seemed in the majority) who hadn't seen them, but loved to talk shit about their musical abilities. There are just so many fools in the world and therefore it makes sense you would find that on the music internet boards.

It's been a long and bumpy ride but DSO is finally being talked about with the respect they deserve on the GD internet boards and a lot of those foolish people who once talked about them with a seeming hatred, now can't stop their praises, and the reason is because they've actually seen them. God damn it's taken a long time and in that time this band has reached a lot of people and it's only due to every member who's ever played with DSO that much of the Internet now regards them as a talented and important band.

I know most people like you Looky, probably could have cared less about what lots of those folks thought, because it was their loss, but I imagine it must have been a little frustrating at times too.

It must be pretty great for someone like you who's been defending them on the internet for 11 years to see this change.

It used to piss me off to no end. Some of the "deals" I've had to make off-line with flamers will not allow me to mention their names (they're probably lurking just waiting for me to break our truce) and for years couldn't even post on Dean.net without the flame of "DSO Shill" I just wanted to introduce, IMO, the best band touring to those who either never saw the Grateful Dead, or those who felt uneasy about giving DSO a chance. I say now, right now, DSO is playing better than ever. I had the tingles of days past when, well, good days past indeed. I think I used to embarrass Web Ed when we'd be walking down the street in (insert city here) and I'd walk up to anyone in a tie-dye and make sure they were coming to the show. I'll say it again,(taking nothing away from everyone on stage) but Jeff Mattson YOU'RE THE SHIT!!! You really on one hell of a picker. Can't wait till you come back to Colorado.

I'll add that I really enjoyed seeing the show with Ed Holub, Foege, John Conti, save Daniella & James(where are you man) as it was the OG Colorado Starhead Contingent.

WTF how about some Colorado dates already?

(see ya maybe this summer......Mishawaka?)

Guest Lisacat

James(where are you man)

someone needs to just drive to his cabin in the woods, tranquilize him, and get him to a show before he knows what is going on. I'll lay the ground work when I'm out there in a few weeks.

Its been 2 1/2 years now since he's been to a show or even listened to Jerry! I've seen him a couple times since. My how time flies......
