There was a sense in the air pre-show about a 69 show on the way, but by playing a 69'er from Eugene while in Eugene kind of seemed to be like pulling out the magic wand...

Wouldn't be surprised if there were a handful of people at the McDonald that night that were actually at the original show-----lots of sweet elder energy at the Oregon shows, particularly in Eugene...

AND, not to mention, lots of GREAT young energy as well....I was inspired by what I witnessed in both Portland and Eugene in the teen to mid-twenties crowd....1)They were there. and 2)They were there dancing their asses off and the music is clearly in their bones...I'm no old-timer myself with just 25+ years of being on the bus with this music, but it really struck me how having that young crew there is part of keeping this music alive now and into the future....dancing around them gave me a lot of hope besides just being really fun....

Hell of a history lesson this show was and I must admit, I need to hit the books and tapes on a couple of those tunes ('Green, Green Grass' and 'He was a Friend') but this show was greasy old school right out of the gate....

Was hoping to get some old-school since this NW run was first chance to see Jeff in this band and he sure as hell delivered....felt really good to get right into it early with the Hard to Handle jams....ahhhhhhh

Absolutely loved Cryptical and it was just done so well and when Kevin dropped into the Other One the place ended up just getting torn up...DAMN it was good!! And then to smooth it all out again back into Cryptical....just seems right........

It was weird at first when they hit Other One when you are so programmed to have it in the 2nd set...that's what was so cool about experiencing this 69 trip---totally challenges some of my usual GD 'programming' and yet it is just so pure GD....hard to explain, but I suspect others have experienced that sense as well...

Sittin' on Top was a blast and some really fun dancing down on the floor after mellowing back out into the Cryptical,,,,and then nice to slow it down again with a Hurts me Too....

The Lovelight needs its own paragraph here.....my goodness.....! Uhhhh,,,,wellll.......this was definitely the full meal deal.......such a great feeling when they first kicked into it and got the boogie sesssion going again and the entire band just seemed so well prepared to play the shit out of this song....it absolutely kicked ass...... and part of what definitely needs to be noted here is Barraco's freaky "channeling" of Pigpen.......he did a FULL on Pig Lovelight rap and indeed made it challenging for all of us guys not to just grab the gal next to ya and start kissing her!!! (Was really wishing my wife was there at this point!!)....the rap was fun and it went on and on at the steady groove but you could just feel the band building the energy up so they could completely rock out again and finish just tearing this one to shreds....it ripped so hard and the crowd was not contained----just completely dancing their asses off with complete roof blowout!!!!!!!!

And I heard at least three different people mention at setbreak how Barraco sounded so much like Pigpen and that it was getting a little eerie......

Crowd was well ready to trip out into the Dark Star after set break and it was a full musical exploration into lots of different territory and a good energetic set-up for the rest of the night....all right on.....felt really good and drippy in the Cosmic Charlie...

The other thing that needs it's own paragraph is everything that happened after the super sweet Bid you Goodnight.....the crowd was already going nuts and filling the hall with roars of gratitude and then,,,,when the sound crew dude brought Lisa's mic out,,,,HOLY SHEEESH.....

Have you ever been in a zoo or seen footage of monkeys going bonkers and jumping around at full throttle, yelping, jumping, grabbing the cage, etc......? Well................

And that was before SHE even came out!!!!!!! When she did step it out, it got even nuttier and everyone was just so PSYCHED to see her after getting rocked so hard from 69....it definitely appeared overwhelming to her (in a good way of course) and when her smile bursted out it just seemed to feed the crowd even more.......Lordy, Lordy.....

I am a huge fan of Lisa but her presence on stage that night was really something....and can I just say that the Alligator>Eleven just SMOTHERED us........SMOTHERED us down into the ashes of the fire of everything that had been flamed up and burned out that night.....unreal yet so real,,,,words useless......other than Thank You, Lisa.....!

This NW run simply kicked ass....Covered so much musical territory, completely went all the way to complete rock out and back on in to sublime sweetness. I don't know if I have ever done 4 nights in a row, even when I was younger (not that I'm that old, facing 40 this year), 3 seemed like my limit last year, and I was curious how 4 was gonna affect the system. I am exhausted, yet inspired and spaced out beyond belief, and still very sleep deprived, but I gotta say, I felt like I was getting younger and younger each night!!!!! HEH HEH HEH......

Humongous thanks to the band and crew for swinging up here to the NW.......this has become such a fun ritual/tradition to shake out the winter and burst into Spring.....

Barraco is just an amazing musician. He's the best there is..... ANYWHERE! I've been seeing that dude perform since the late 70's first in a band based on the East Coast called Timberwolf....then with the ZT's and later with P& F.....and of course tons of shows with DSO. That LOVELIGHT that they did in Tarrytown was also just jaw dropping sublime stuff. In another times forgotten space......

The lighting at McDonald Theater was crummy; backlighting from the

band's lights and a gentle wash from above but nothing from the

front per se, so, sorry, and, of course, my camera's mike clips

when it gets real loud, but I think you'll still appreciate:

"Take yo hands outa you pockets":

"Reason tatters":

between verses:

"Glass Hand Dissolving"

(sorry, cuts right at "shall we go"; memory card filled up)

Island bro, you said it all! What a great pleasure I just had reading your post out loud to a friend of mine. I had chills and my hair on my arms stood on end. You hit it right on! Usually when I see a few shows in a row one always stand out as better or not as the case may be, The band was on fire both nights, and last night looks amazing too. I have to just stand back and be so incredibly grateful to DSO for keeping the music alive for me.

This is a band that is devoted to keeping the love alive, and I am devoted to seeing them more than any other! This is the time my friends, we are so lucky! Thank you DSO (this includes everybody) you all work so hard I hope you know how much we appreciate you!

I too have been impressed by the younger crowd. They've got it, they know the songs, they know the lyrics, and they groove!!! Yippeeeee

Smiles, can't wait to be on the playground again sometime soon!!!

Hey,,,thanks for the positive feedback from ya'll above---appreciate it, and glad these words were useful to ya since, as we all know, this particular music experience can be pretty hard to put into words...

But, honestly, I thank all of you guys and gals for keeping these boards active and interesting....I've been reading them for years (especially reviews) and finally realized it was time to get off me ass and 'give back' by trying to put out that which I feel I've already received from many of your reviews/posts over the past few years, in particular. Must admit, I've never participated in any online community before and don't even have a facebook page or anything of the sort (well, I DO have an email at least!) so it's been fun to dive in and make this more of a '2-way' street...

Besides that, I'm thinking that documenting highlights in life like outrageous DSO shows in the reviews boards may come in handy some day when I'm 92 and in the rocking chair and reflecting on the good times in this life...dig?

This is a great community around this band and my experience is that it just seems to keep getting better....somehow or another, it appears that we all have the opportunity (responsibilty?) to do what we can to keep it going in that direction....

This music is literally in our DNA and DSO is truly the band that takes it beyond beyond

Many thanks,,,,,,

I have to agree with what Emma said, though I only get to see DSO a couple of times a year, when they come close to home. I love everything about the scene and the sound of the music. DSO for me, is the best. Only wish I could go to more shows than i do. The best band and fans going right now is Dark Star Orchestra. Bar none. Thanks again! I will make it to some more shows this year, Eugene show absolutely blew me away.Iv'e said it before, but I love that your keeping the flame alive or lit! This is the real deal!!

I'm still trying to gather my thoughts around this night. I had a feeling it was going to be a 69 show as soon as Eugene was announced....what could more perfect for that scene and venue?

The first set warmed up quickly with Hard to Handle and by the Lovelight the crowd was in a frenzy. The GD's lovelight that night was 29 minutes long and DSO played it for 28 minutes. Pig's spirit was surely in the house. A super long and dirty rap by Mr. Barraco....this one is not for the kids folks.

Second set was transcendental. Beautiful He was a Friend of Mine....gorgeous jamming on that. Sick Dark Star. I walked through the back at that point and what a scene. People with facepaint and bells running up and down the halls, little kids dancing, people spinning in the lobby, perfect Eugene ambiance. No one drunk. No one acting like an asshole (well there was one guy later in the show- I think he was shipped straight from Sayreville, NJ).

Then came the Doing that Rag- a song I haven't listened too a whole bunch of times and was NOT expecting to go into the jam it did. Unreal....that might have been some of the hardest dancing I've ever done. Then of course a very cosmic charlie...I'm not a huge fan of the song but I love the early ones as they are really drippy as Island Bro said.

Baby Blue was beautiful and a very meaningful song to me- that was when Mr. NJ came in. I swear he was the only person talking in the venue. But oh well, I was blissed out enough I was able to ignore him.

Bid You Goodnight was one of the most sacred moments I've ever had at a show. It was as if the whole house was praying together and the spirits of Jerry and Pig were watching over. Everyone was smiling, singing and dancing. There was a woman who was singing a beautiful harmony with the band next to me- normally I'm not into people singing along but she had a gorgeous voice and was hitting high notes that fit right in with the band.

So if that wasn't enough already, we were treated with a mini 3rd set. Holy alligator. Hands down the best I've ever heard. I have no clue what was going on with those drums/percussion but I felt like I was going to levatate right out of the venue. Then came my eleven which I was super happy to hear. The Lindy/New Orleans was a great way to end it. What a night.

Great to dance with dear friends and see the Williams crew there! So many fun dancers in the house. So far my favorite night of the tour....I think.

By the way, if you listen to the original show, the Baby Blue, despite some vocal flaws, is one of the more heartfelt baby blues I've heard Jerry do.

I remember once upon a time the prevailing assumption was that pre-70 shows were un-do-able for inability to fill the scatting shoes of Pigpen. Glad to see that's been overturned. Just goes to show you don't ever know...

decided to download this show today from the spring west coast tour. It sounds just as good on recording as it did that night....(yay, it wasn't just the.....!) I love when I can listen to a show and can almost see the energy oozing from the speaker. A fun night to relive....and so crystal clear in the memory....smiles everywhere, gorgeous dancers, the smelly guy standing on the floor that probably didn't shower in 7 weeks, the kiddos dancing in the back, and the folks running around in costumes. Oh yea, and there was music too.

the alligator-Eleven is brilliant.....

and I got chills listening to the bid you goodnight again (on the same file as Baby Blue, at the end); its great that you can hear the audience....those were a few magical minutes inside the mcdonald

go give it a listen

Quit hammering away at how great this show and the whole Pacific Northwest tour was last spring. :) I get it!!!! You're torturing me.

I could have been there. I had the vacation time and the money. The flight was reasonable. I procrastinated (stupid and lazy) and eventually the flight was too much. I ended up using my vacation time on rainy days in May at home thinking about what could have been.

do you want to hear about Colorado or Alaska instead?

btw- there is no use in regretting or would haves or could haves. It distracts from whats actually happening now! next time, buy the tickets. I'm sure the universe had a reason why you didn't go for it though, and that's where trust comes in! It all makes sense eventually.

I already read your review about Colorado and Alaska. I handled that better because I was never going. It always hurts more when you actually made plans, reservations, etc and ended up canceling. Its like just because I booked a hotel and looked at flights on orbitz somehow I was supposed to be there. I do this all the time too. I look at shows that I might travel to, end up not going, and then when I see the setlist I'm like, "Doh, I was gonna go to that." When in reality I was never gonna go.

You are wise Lisa. I shall take your advise and run with it.

Even though I was never going, I was sad when I saw the Terrapin Nation setlist. Green Grass of Home. I love that song. I was sad for missing that song alone and the rest of the set looked amazing.
