blown away last night....stellar performance. I think even just between the last west coast tour and this tour, the band has gotten even tighter, stronger, and finding their way through and between the notes with perfect flow and grace. I was completely running on fumes going into the show wondering how I was going to get through it and somehow they pulled every last bit of energy I had in me out and I danced as if I had a full tank. There were so many great moments last night- particularly in the first set with the Sugaree, a beautiful Looks Like Rain, Row Jimmy, and a perfect Mission in the Rain- I am filled with gratitude every time I hear that tune. And the Wheel spun me for sure.

Also had a really sweet moment connecting with someone who used to work at the Crystal a few years ago and was there the night I was roofied at the show. She was the only venue staff member who was kind to my friends who were trying to help me and she also helped carry me out. I recognized her because she came to the Eugene show the night after the Crystal show and I had found out there she had helped me so it was really great to be able to thank her again.

Kinda lost my marbles a bit at the Portland show so still piecing it together but luckily they all bounced back up off that springy floor and landed in more or less the right spot...

First off...the way the venue was managed was a little different---this time they actually let us go in and out instead of being locked up in there for the whole night with no fresh air during the set break so that was a huge improvement. And after last year and witnessing them dragging people out left and right for lighting up, I must say that I didn't notice any of that happening this time but what I was noticing that night was not always necessarily reflective of reality so take it with a grain of salt....

On the downside, that damn barrier between the beer area and the rest of the floor just keeps drifting further and further out into the space on the floor over time....Years ago at other shows it was WAY back off the main dance floor. Plus the way they do that barrier with the double curtain fences, it wastes a tremendous amount of floor space that could easily absorb like 150+ people if it wasn't there. (However, I know that the venue has to make $ and sell drinks and that all supports the band, etc,,,BUT there's got to be a better way to seperate the alcohol area without wasting floor space!!!) And once again, they seemed to let a 'few' too many people in the door so space was a bit tight and kinda like a sauna in there, but, hey, we were in Oregon and people were ready for a real good time....

This was definitely one of them shows where you were REALLY ready for the Promised Land at the end of first set since things were moving real slow with the LLR, Row Jimmy, Mission, etc.

Loved hearing Row Jimmy--that tune has so many great memories wrapped up in it for me... and they totally took their time with it,,,,truly sweet. I wasn't expecting Mission but it was so refreshing to to come out of the sauna and step outside during the setbreak to discover a nice light rain (after a beautiful warm, sunny day earlier) and take a walk around a few blocks with that tune still in my head....thank goodness for being with old friends or othewise I woulda just kept walking and walking and forgotten that there was still a show going on and a second set to return to....

And heckuva 2nd set....little looser on the dance floor with some space to dance and what a fun 2nd set----- really helped to kick right off with Samson and get the energy MOVING! And getting that floor bouncing is so much fun---I love how it seems like floor kind of dances you instead of you dancing on the floor when it gets bouncy.. :D Some people kind of don't like the springs under the floor and find it awkward and distracting but once you find the groove with it....it just kind of propels you....

The most fascinating musical part of the evening for me (and I thought there might already be a comment or 2 about it here...) was how slow the Wheel was turning...I have NEVER heard anything like that!

It was as if there was goops and goops of molasses caught up in the wheel and it was just creeping along. Again, given my state of mind mentioned above, I'd like to hear some confirmation from others, but everyone I was with all felt the incredible slowness of how they were playing it. It was fun and interesting...totally different to dance to than your more typical Wheel......It was so slow, I honestly wondered if this was the band's little trickster energy on April Fool's Day!!,,,,,But, why the heck rush a song like that, anyway??!! And after the St. Stephen-NFA sandwich followed by Eyes and then some ripping drumming it just felt good to slow WAY down. The Wheel was turning, but just barely......smooth and steady,,,,,nice and easy....................I'm definitely going to be wanting to listen to this show again to check that out, specifically, and I'm also now very curious what the original '76 was like....

Nice to come out of a show with some homework to do and study these things.....

Around n Around was REALLY fun to finish off with to just keep the energy moving after sugar mag and US Blues and keep the floor bouncing..... :D

Careful out there....sometimes when one or two (marbles) get misplaced for a long time or lost indefinitely a world of hurt manifests itself...

It's a marathon out there....Long Journey.....

a dream come true: a dso show in my home town!!!! any show that you ride your bike to is a good one!!!

The show was incredible. After the first 3 songs, i thought it may have been a 75 show (considering it was april fools day)..but that was cleared up as the songs continued.. lots of highlights, but Eyes was out of this world. 5-10 minute guitar solo before the first lyrical stanza. they were doing the 74 style eyes jam (with the deep parts that are similar to king solomens), and jeff comes out of the jam with the most incredible euphoric release.. the whole crowd cheered in unison as jeff brought the jam back around!! (can't be properly described with words.. hopefully a tape will surface and suffice). DSO is on fire right now!! My once empty cup is now overflowing with what only love can fill!!!!

Sitting here in the city of roses, i can't help but think how much I owe to DSO and the starhead family for my current life situation. If it wasn't for this band and the friends I made along the way, I would not be living in Portland, OR. It was DSO that took me to both coasts (and Europe) for the first time. Following DSO taught me that America wasn't as shitty as I thought it was, and that there are a lot of really cool places to live/visit in the US. DSO manifested the travel bug within me, and is directly related to my discovery and infatuation with Portland and the NW corner. Thank you dso and starheads for all the music, love, wisdom, and generosity you have shared with me.. for better or worse, i am who i am largely thanks to dark star orchestra.

Thanks, and I hear ya,....believe me, I know....

But these days with home life, job, wife, plenty of resposibilities, things to take care of, more than full plate of tasks and linear thinking, etc.....it actually feels somehow useful to let a couple (marbles) drop out to lighten the load and roll around on the floor and see what they look like from that perspective....as long as they get gathered back up timely (as you say) and tucked back in their proper resting place......

Long journey, indeed....
