Jk Moving Away From "jerry" Voice

I have been listening to some of Furthur on GDRADIO while I am hanging in Houston for the weekend with my son who is sick with an ear infection and I have to say JK is moving away from his Jerry sounding voice to a more Original sounding tone. I know this is what Phil and Bob have been asking him to do for a while but it seems he is really pushing himself vocally, very different.....Dr.V

I agree. Actually I first detected the shift during JK's last few shows with DSO, especially Hagerstown. For the first time JK was inflecting his voice with vibrato, something completely missing from Jerry's vocals.

While I respect JK's choice, I prefer his "Jerry voice". My .02.

i think his voice is more like jerry, without trying to be jerry...

I think JK has always sounded like JK. His play list is evolving so therefore his voice. Its weird but my favorite JK stuff lately has been the non jerry material...Love the Magnolia Mountain! Love the Easy wind!

I got to give Furthur big props for rolling out diverse, creative setlists as they dust off old tunes and incorporate new ones...teaming up tunes that were never side by side before...last nights first set looks and sounds really good...peace...SJ

I haven't posted on this topic since I first read it because it makes me sad. A lot of you have seen this music evolve and change throughout your lives, and though from the sounds of it some of those changes were often hard (and some more than others) but I do believe it seems many of you have gotten used to these changes and evolutions and are mature enough to accept it and roll with it.

We fell in love with the Grateful Dead BECAUSE of JK. Because he sounded like freakin Jerry! We met and fell in love with each other because DSO brought us together. Of course we love DSO with Jeff (jesus, he makes us dance harder than any other guitarist around!), and we love seeing JK play with Phil and Bob because it is special and otherworldly and it is awesome to see him get to "be himself".... but.... well.... maybe it is incredibly immature, but we just want to stand in front of him while he plays like Jerry, like, forever. Nothing else in the world makes us happier than holding each other while he transports us to a world we never saw but know we KNOW. And it doesn't happen as often when he doesn't play like Jerry.

I'm gonna confess it: we sit around and listen to old DSO with JK almost as much as we listen to the Dead and we talk about the way things "used to be" (hahahaha, which is SO FUNNY since Jon saw his first show just before Rob B joined and I didn't see my first show til 09) and sometimes, well, sometimes we freaking cry... though not as hard as the Deviled Egg did at that last show on the rail.

Jon walked into the room the other day after listening to a clip from some of those first Oakland shows and told me that Phil and Bob broke his heart. Wish there was a facebook page for that one.

HOWEVER: I get it. We get it. I know these sentiment are just those of an idealistic couple that found each other after stumbling into a rainbow full of sound that neither could ignore, then just when they thought they could finally enjoy this magical, life changing THING together, it was snatched away before they even really understood what IT was. We have toured both bands since the deal went down, and though I think we'll ALWAYS be SELFISHLY completely tore up over what happened, we freakin dance our asses off at both, and get shocked into motionless wonder, and feel like the room is giving way into another reality where we really are all sisters and brothers, on a regular basis whether it is DSO or Furthur that we are seeing. Because THIS MUSIC is not something that can be owned, and you can't use your ego to play it or view it or you are missing the point. THIS MUSIC is one of the strongest living spirits in the world today, and the musicians who have deadicated their lives to it are my heroes and ALWAYS will be.

SO, at the end of the day, let John sing any damn way he freakin pleases.... I know that is how a mature person is supposed to feel, after all. But, I can't help but be forever young in quite a few ways and one of those is that I just wanna see JK play like Jerry forever.... Jerry's sound is one of the only sounds that really makes my spirit feel free, and JK captured it just exactly perfect, and we will always miss THAT. But the sounds my ears and feet are hearing now are changing my life, still, every day. JK has brought a dynamic back to the way Phil and Bob play together that makes my heart melt. Do you guys SEE the way Phil looks at him half the time? and Bobby is starting to do it to.... they SEE the music.... maybe more.

I can't express how grateful I am to every deadhead EVER and every deadhead musician ESPECIALLY for keeping such a beautiful experience so vibrantly alive for my generation and those to come. It is a great feat to have a community with SO MANY controversial, outrageous, joyous and sometimes just plain obscene opinions that are all born out of a central love for a sound and experience that is unique to a certain family of people that despite their differences, all seem to be sure of one thing and one thing only: the music never stopped.

I get it. There is nothing wrong with loving the new DSO and missing the old. I pretty much thought I was over this whole change and then I read your post and I felt a little sad. Only for a second.

You 2 are not the only ones that miss JK. He will always hold a special place in my heart. He is a huge part of why I became a deadhead, if it is okay for me to call myself that. I feel more like a Starhead and although I go see Furthur and other dead related bands, I will always feel most at home at the Dark Star show regardless of whose on stage. That being said, I miss JK and listen to JK DSO recordings a lot. Been a while since I cried, but I won't say it never happend.

I miss the old days too Mrs. D!! But no other generation of Starheads or Deadheads can say that there was every this much beautiful music being played by two totally different entities.. I mean DSO is on FREAAAKING FIIIRE right now Mattson is the man and I am so Grateful he joined DSO, and Furthur is slowly starting to become "Uncle Johns Band" so to speak.. So now not only dowe have DSO and Furthur but we also lucky enough to have 7walkers, Rhythm Devils and other amazin GD Cover Bands all around the country.. I feel we are truly blessed to have so many great musicians spreading the love!! But you know what I want to see most (besides JK with DSO)... A Dead Reunion with John at the helm! THAT would be a sight to see...

I totally agree that we are blessed to have such great music to hear from so many different bands. The music is whats lacking. We have 2 power house bands in my opinion. DSO is as good as ever and Phil and Bobby are making the best music I've ever seen them make (never saw GD). I guess its like the Bobby line from Looks like Rain (I've gotten used to having you around...) I did a lot of DSO shows w JK. I still do a lot of DSO shows. I pretty much spend every minute of my spare time and create as much spare time as possible to go see DSO. So after about 120 DSO w JK shows I had gotten used to and comfortable with the sound.

This second set is pretty darn good...especially the Mountain song right through fire...creative and powerful jamming...

I really enjoy Mountain Song. I have listened to this before.

I was front row center for Mountain Song in Chicago in November. I thought it was incredible. Phil was so into it. I don't like how much Phil sings in Furthur but he nails this song. It fits him.
