Just got up and around from last night's show.

What a show!

The first half was a kind of cowboys and RIP pig pen (who died on that date in 73? i think i heard) iincluding a big iron I have only ever heard at that awesome place Nelson Ledges Quarry Park and the second half was one of those electric wonderpieces that makes you aware of two things 1) that the dead's old electric shows brought everything together in a way that had never been done before and 2) that DSO faithfully recreates the experience in a way no one else does at all, anywhere.

It was an unbelievable original setlist that included a rousing standing on the moon and then the worlds longest unfinished unbroken chain with Kevin on vocals and a light show and percussion and guitar sound that was better than faithful recreation, because, coming out of unbroken chain into the rest of a show and then back in is SO over the top.

I sort of came back to things from dancing w/ my best bud during dark star, but their was a top notch lighted and sound carried rhythym devils and then the show dirfted into beatles songs with the whole crew getting into it, among them, my fav a dear mr fantasy hey jude that was so smoking hot.

as ones who has thought no one would be watching us, we both grooved hard to a hard rocking Why Don't We Do It In The Road (fwiw, someone MIGHT be watching you, which, it seems is WHY you don't do it in the road, ugh).

And i know I am skipping tons of great stuff but a Morning Dew that was hard to believe. It showcased just homw much DSO are such top quality talented musicians and showmen and showwoman. I love that song and listen to it a ton (there seems to be some story that it was an anti war song, which is great too), but DSO Tore It UP!

Anyway,, on a night that was thrown by incredibile rain and road flooding, the day after Ash Wed and two days after mardi gras (when the pros are resting up), DSO showed you can play HARD on a Thursday night right here in big beautful washington DC and fill a place up with fans, and that DSO can reward them with a killer show.

( RIP Scott Larned) (RIP Pig) and the list goes on....Brent Jerry and Vince, among tons of others.

Thanks DSO. :dsorocks::dsorocks::dsorocks: Thanks Walther

Y'all were bringing home the party when we need it the most!

Thanks for the spirited review, kenneubonz! Sounds like an incredible show and I heard that the band had another sold out show too! Here is the complete set list, which looks absolutely miraculous! Makes me even more excited about my next shows at the Great American Music Hall. I hope I get an Unbroken Chain. Haven't heard this by DSO yet but I was in Philly when the GD broke it out and I have always love this song.

Set One: Dancing In The Street ; Cold Rain And Snow ; Cassidy ; You Win Again ; It's All Over Now ; Ain't It Crazy (The Rub) ; It Must Have Been The Roses ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again : Ramble On Rose ; Big Iron > Mystery Train

Set Two: Unbroken Chain > Standing On The Moon > Greatest Story > Lonesome And A Long Way From Home > Dark Star > Space > Drums > Unbroken Chain reprise > Hey Jude > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude finale > Why Don't We Do It In The Road? > Morning Dew

Encore: Werewolves Of London

Notes: Sold Out

Highlights--

Old school dancin, no lisa.

Roses was sick, not a huge fan of it, but Jeff nailed it, and there's no where to hide in that ballad.

Memphis Blues, fantastic, I haven't seen Eaton do it without messing up, absolutely huge.

Big iron, mystery train, are you fucking kidding me, genius combination, that should be a staple...

Lonesome, more Jerry, Jeff is a beast on Jerry tunes, he's got the quickest hands.

Hey jude fantasty- can't go wrong with that, Barraco= perfection

Do it in the road- perfect spot

Best Dew I have heard Matteson produce.

Herdy's elective birthday show, nice job buddy...

Why we coming back.

Fantastically played show by the boys last nite. Love the energy of the original.

First set with some interesting turns, well run jams in Cassidy, All Over Now.

Mystery Train was funky upbeat and rocked the house to close.

Brilliant journey to the the first verse of Dark Star.

Getting the candyflip of the Unbroken out of space-great call.

Quality execution of the Jude>Fantasy>Jude by Rob.

The Dew was absolutely epic, Jeff, you the man.

Werewolves an appropriate encore for the original.

Great to see Chuck, Herdy, Eric, Debbie.

See you in Hagtown tonite.

I spent the entire show perched on the balcony since I am nursing a pretty mighty chest cold.

Perhaps my low energy level affected my perception, but I felt like the 1st and 2nd sets were like night and day different. The first set felt soooo mellowwww.........like a jet plane taxiing on the runway and making a few accelerated runs and then taxxiing some more, but never achieving lift-off. By the time the first set ended, I found myself hoping that they would step things up in the 2nd set. This is DSO after all, and I knew that I would not leave the dance hall disappointed. In roughly 75 shows, I've never left feeling disappointed.

Well, the second set came and the DSO jet achieved lift-off in short order. I really appreciated the variety of tunes in the set-list in the 2nd set. The complete Hey Jude-Fantasy/Jude reprise was awesome. Rob B. nailed the vocals on that big time. The Dew was epic.......Mattson's virtuosity really came screaming through on that one. I also really dig Eaton's rhythm work on Dew, especially when the song is peaking.......well done gentlemen.

I also really appreciated Lisa's spirited energy last night. I felt like her enthusiasm really sparked the band to step it up a notch. I hope Dino is OK. He looked about like I felt last night. At times during the first set I thought he may do a face plant into his snare drum. If you are indeed feeling under the weather, Dino, get well fast.

Lastly, thanks DSO for returning to the State Theater. It's my favorite venue in the entire country. :dsorocks:

For the record, the Jude>Fantasy>Jude was my call... Being it my 300th DSO show, and my "birthday week", I asked Rob B. if he would play the Fantasy>Jude for me, and he told me that he would definatly do it for me. This is the first time the B3 has been on that stage since Scotty passed away... Thank you Nick for letting that monster onstage, and Rob B. for honoring your promise. I love you guys so much!

Eaton played the Big Iron for me, and he did a fantastic job with that one! The Mystery Train was fuckin' SIIIIICK!!!! The whole show was just amazing, and I can't thank the band enough for making my night! By far, out of 301 shows, this show ranks up there with the bestest! Saw my first DSO show at The State Theater so what a great coincidence that my 300th show would be there! My 100th show was at Irving Plaza, right after Scotty passed away, and number 200 was at The Ram's Head in Baltimore.

Thank you, for a real good time!!

like my best buddy herdy, i too have seen 300 plus dso shows now and still ask myself every time I leave a show " Is this band REALLY that good? " I love you all so much and cannot imagine life without dso :(

my buddy tommy west, who has seen hundreds of gd shows like myself was considering leaving right before the dew, due to a big day at work the next day...i asked him to please stay and he said it was probably the best morning dew he had ever heard....i, as well, felt the same way...i just cannot get over how great jeff mattson really is.....and such a nice guy as well....thank you for being part of the dso family Jeff.

I really like this recent review of this show. Here are some excerpts. I did 4 shows on this past run and I loved every single one of them.

"There are very few bands that can consistently captivate, motivate, and inspire audiences across America for over 1O years"

I remember walking down the boardwalk in Ocean City N.J in 2002 and seeing the marquee that said DARK STAR ORCHESTRA TONIGHT. I said wow thats the DEAD band I heard about, I have to check them out. Over 100 shows later I'm still going, and the feeling I get when the lights go down for a DSO show hasn't changed. SHEER JOY!

"One of the most experimental parts of the show was an extended electronic drum solo that felt like a moment at a Floyd show, but showed the audience what the band members could do beyond simply playing DEAD tunes"

Although sometimes unheralded, and not in the forefront Dino and Koritz are ASS KICKERS, plain and simple. I'd put them up against anyone right now...including Russo, who's also a beast.

"It is difficult to find someone at a DSO show who doesn't look like there having the time of their life. Whether you are an aging Deadhead, or a new devotee you can't help but to sing and dance all evening. The happiness that one feels at a Dark Star concert is a testament to the bands ability not only to recreate an experience but to captivate audiences time and time again"

So ok maybe we can find one person. ;) I guess I fall into the category of aging Deadhead cuz I did just turn 50....but one thing I can tell you is that when I'm at a DSO show I feel like a kid again. Its the days after the shows, that remind me that I'm not.I have been nursing a sprained knee since the run and I actually threw my shoulder out in Tarrytown (I have no idea how, so that was a first while not competing in a sport) and had to put it back in place against the wall, because Ernst looked at me like I was psycho when I asked him to pop it back in for me. Maybe I dance a lil' hard, and am a tad out of my mind, but damn it sure is fun! I just think that all of us that are on this bus, during this time, are very blessed....and history will play that out. To my Sisters and Brothers..... I  YOU!! We'll take that ride again! LONG LIVE DSO!!
