Fun show. Highlights for me were Jack Straw, The Thrill is Gone(Really sick, never really heard this song before..), Two Souls, Cumberland, Weather Report(Mattson throwing down, his acoustic skills shining), and Reuben and Cherise>Makes no difference(song by the Band, also played by Terrapin Nation on 12-30-10). Cool to see the band is this acoustic setting for sure....I'll be stoked to get plugged back in tonight :)

Thrill is gone...I assume this is the BB King song? Sung by? Mattson?

not sure who wrote it, mattson sang it. I think 'a voice from on high' is actually 'i hear a voice a callin'.

Yes, Lisa. The Thrill is Gone is by B.B. King and A Voice from On High, Mangosteen, is the name of the Bill Monroe song that includes the lyrics I head a voice a callin'. Love that stuff! Wish I could have been there last night.

Thrill is gone, sung by Garcia, included in the movie Smoke sound track. They actually made a video of it with Garcia appearing in a top hat... (Remember seeing that video lots when he passed in 95.)

He played it as Garcia/Grisham as early as 90. I'm listening to the Warfield Feb 2nd, 1991 right now. Thrill is gone is smokin.

I love that Garcia/Grisman version!! I had it as my ringback tone on cell phone, and my buddy keeps saying "I love that song on your phone, what is it?, The Chill is Gone??" Yeah, the chill is gone...

2/2/91 is absolute gold. The 1st show Garcia and Grisman played together in their reunited musical affiliation, and I don't think any of the subsequent shows were ever better.

I have a 1995 Deadbase that lists a Garcia and Grisman show on 12-17-90 Sweetwater, Mill Valley,Ca. It shows one set. I know sometimes an old Deadbase gets it wrong but 1990 seems pretty late to be missing shows.

We taped these shows.

As did we. B&K 4011s->Neumann Power Supply->Panasonic SV255 DAT. Mics hand held at chin, 110 degrees ORTF, one person behind the "drink rail" (2nd level, which is eye level with the stage). The 2/2 tape is brilliant. The only issue is that the crowd noise is a few decibels louder than the music, due to the acoustic nature of the performance. Fortunately, the crowd is totally silent for the music. This tape is a poster child for a digital editing workstation to put a limiter on the between songs applause. One day....

Redeyed,

Yes, technically they had played that Sweetwater gig. But due the nature of the Sweetwater, it was more of a private rehearsal gig, so I still count 2/2/91 as the first public performance of this group.

After I posted it dawned on me that was probably what happened. I almost edited my post but I figured I would get an answer and move on. Your right, that is a hot show. I would say so hot, that anyone out there who loved Jerry and hasn't heard that night is in for a special treat. Find it now!!

Last verse of Two Soldiers last night sent an electric surge through my body. So much emotion in that voice.

I don't think "The Thrill is Gone" was on the Smoke soundtrack.......seem to remember it being "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by Jerry Garcia Band. Either way....both great tunes. Love the playful flirtation bewtween Jerry and Ahley Judd :)

Think you mean Two Souls, not Two Soldiers... Two Soldiers is one of my absolute favorites, and I hope that some day DSO will play it! Such a sad, yet great story in that ballad!

No I meant Two Soldiers. I can see how I confused you. I see they played Two Souls at this show. When I said it moved me last night, I meant last night at my home listening to it. I was telling lisacat about The Thrill is Gone from Garcia and Grisman 91 and I told her to also listen to Two Soldiers from that night.

We are on the same page. Two Soldiers is special.

It's been almost a week since the show, but I am still glowing from the brilliance of this fine acoustic performance. I will now try my best to give it a focused review:

"Dire Wolf" was a good choice for a first set warm-up, and the "El Paso" that followed also seemed to help get people in the mood. To finally see an acoustic version of "Jack Straw" was a treat, and completely unexpected. "The Thrill Is Gone" was just spectacular, with Jeff really LEANING into the vocals, and sounding quite like Jerry in parts. His solos were inspired, and the rest of the band could not have been more supportive... a true highlight of the evening for me. Speaking of highlights, I was probably one of the few attendees who was absolutely ecstatic to hear "Shade Of Grey", and I am so glad Rob Eaton chose this one. While Bobby's "Heaven Help The Fool" album does not appear on many "Desert Island Disc" lists, I have always enjoyed this song from it, and hope DSO plays this one more often. A moment of humor surfaced when Rob Eaton asked the audience: "Fat Tuesday is coming up pretty soon, isn't it?", not knowing that it was, in fact, that very day! Many in the crowd shouted "It's Today", and Rob sheepishly said something like: "Doah!" A guy standing next to me then yelled "Iko"... and the band, of course, obliged with a terrific version, in honor of Mardi Gras. "Two Souls in Communion" was a fitting tribute to Pigpen, who died 38 years ago on this date, and Rob Barraco lead the band beautifully on this number, with great help from Lisa on vocals. "Cumberland Blues" was an excited romp, with a guest drummer sitting in for Dino. This song works very well acoustically, and the band worked the crowd into a frenzy toward the end. "Esau" was fun to hear, bit I must admit that I find it more appealing in the electric format. "Bird Song" was a perfect song choice for the set closer, and what a fine version it was. Full of peaks, valleys, and emotions... another highlight,, for sure.

Set 2 opened with a wonderful version of "Weather Report Suite", which is a natural selection for an acoustic show. Rob Eaton's vocals were spot on, and the backing vocals were so harmonic it gave me goosebumps. The crowd loved the segue into "Let It Grow", and the "I AM"s were sung by one and all. "To Lay me Down" was given a tender, soulful treatment by Mr. Mattson. "Unbroken Chain" was another unexpected gem, and I never thought I would get to see DSO do this number. Kevin gave it his best shot vocally, and his bass playing was exceptional. I loved his facial expressions during this song, and he seemed to having a blast with it. Lisa took "Chimes Of Freedom" to a level bordering on rapture....it really seemed like we were in church at this point (and, in fact, we were in our own version of "church", without the guilt, lies, etc.) having Lisa enlighten us to the best of Mr. Dylan's lyrics."Chimes" is by no means my favorite Dylan tune, but she brought the house down with this song. Of course, Lisa could sing "Mary Had A Little lamb" and I would swoon... such an amazing set of pipes !!! "Dupree's > Mountains of the Moon was just another example of how much Jeff Mattson adds to this band... great, late 60's treatment to both songs, and I closed my eyes to see the light. "Oh Boy" was a fun choice, and the band seemed like it had a blast on this one, as did the audience. "Ruben and Cherise" was another surprise, and got the crowd pumped for what was to come. "It Makes No Difference" was a heartfelt tribute to the Band, and the emotions coming through this version were palpable... a major highlight for me. "A Voice From On High" was also gorgeously sung, and "The Weight: was another crowd pleaser. "Ripple" was delivered gracefully... a perfect end to a fantastic set of music.

The two encores were short, but fun. "Drink Up and Go Home" was a hoot, and "Goodnight Irene" was just stellar, as i had voted on this number to be the encore when they were polling for such votes on the Tour Dates pages a few weeks earlier... and I got my wish !!!

A big "Thank You" to DSO, and to the ultra cool staff at Mexicali for making this an evening of music I will never forget.
