While friday night was quite fun, last night blew the roof off. Fantastic show! Those who picked friday over saturday, well, im sorry.

Setlist to follow

Friday night was a lot of fun due to the company (and as Mango said, y'all missed out on Saturday for real) but the setlist and the playing were both "okay." Was not very impressed but there were moments as the night got progressively better. I knew they would be bringing it for Saturday. Saturday was absolutely without a doubt the best I had ever seen Melvin, Stu, and the rest of JGB. Melvin was so electric and lively the entire night. Fantastic solos and I think he sounds great on TWLWMYD. Stu sounded great vocally and on guitar all night. Really peaked some of the jams and also created some beautiful, subtle moments. I thought his playing the night before was perhaps a bit uninspired and didn't touch me like Saturday night did. Given some time, I think Stu could really mature into something consistently special. Saturday night truly wowed me though.

Anyways, thanks to everyone who came out and had a good time with me. It was loads of fun...

I Want to tell You (Lennon/McCartney)

Thanks Stone. I noticed it wasn't played too often (12 times in total?) in JGB... February and March of 76, December of 86, and February and March of 87.

If you could recommend a show with a good performance of it, it would be much appreciated. I do like 76 and 87 JGB a lot in fact. Surprised I never came across this tune.

Grateful Dead also started covering this in '94 and '95.

Here's a nice version from Madison Square Garden courtesy of our friends at Lazy Cow.

On second look, it's probably not one of Jerry's better moments...

Garcia never bothered to really learn the lyrics when he played this again in 94. Therefore, all the versions were basically a mess in places. It was a perfect example of why ALL of his songs should have been on the teleprompter. If they were going to use it for Days Between then put every song on there, just in case a situation arose when it was needed. Better to have it and not need it then the other way around.

I'm positive he would have said he wouldn't want that and that it would have taken away from his enjoyment of performing on a really basic level, but it is my opinion that if he had tried it for a tour, and had it for the first word of a verse whenever he needed it, it would have cleaned up his songs and the shows a great deal, and it would have added to his pleasure instead of detracting from it.

He once said a perfect show for him is when nothing was memorable, in the sense that nothing stood out. I basically think he meant when things went off without a hitch. In terms of lyrics, he sang a lot of songs and so he would occasionally miss a lyric, but starting in about '91, he started missing them at an increasingly alarming rate and that, in and of itself made things stand out--I'm sure to him even more than us (maybe I'm not sure about that, but semi-sure).

I wish I was in charge of the telepromters when they got them (which they probably should have done sooner) cause I would have put every single song up there, not just the newer ones and songs like Visions. Someone should have done it, whether he asked for it or not and just done it for a tour (they wouldn't have been fired). I remember hearing that it was expensive to do for all the songs, which I didn't get then and still don't. I think he would have preferred glancing at that thing once in a while rather than missing so many lyrics. Yeah, it would not have been as real or whatever, but I honestly think he would have liked how it helped clean up his songs verses whatever loss in organic feel.

For example, if he had had a teleprompter in '94 with every song on it, all the versions of I Want to Tell U would have been really, really good.

Good point about the Just Exactly Perfect Brothers band...thanks as always for the insight. But would you really have wanted to have been in charge of anything there?

David,

Do you know what show marked the official debut of the teleprompters? And if they weren't using them for something like I Want To Tell You, what were they using them for, besides obvious things like Visions and I suspect Days Between?

Opinions vary regarding this. First hand memories of things past aren't vary accurate as any trial lawyer or psychologist will tell you. It is my opinion that the first time they used them was in December of '94. He needed them about 3 years before that.

They had most of the new songs on there I think. Vince thought Tell U was on there in '95 but I don't (at least not the one I saw). For some reason, Garcia used a music sheet (like John) for Lucy in the Sky...don't ask me why.

I have a feeling it was a more complicated process than it would seem. Like I said in my earlier post, I think it would have REALLY helped for all songs: Jed, Terrapin....whatever.

Saw JGB at the GAMH in San Francisco this past weekend. This was my first experience seeing this band, so I can't compare with any previous shows, and I have no idea how the NY shows compared to SF. All I can say is what I saw was just outstanding. Truly inspired playing from the whole band. Stu Continues to blow my mind. Have now seen him with DSO, Frontstreet, and now JGB. He is truly a versatile musician, and a real pleasure to experience with whoever he is playing with. He really seemed to be channeling Jerry's spirit this past weekend. i would close my eyes and at times it was as if Jer was still up there singing and picking that guitar. I look forward to seeing JGB again.

Hey Stu if you happen to read this: Please play more often with Frontstreet in the Bay Area!!

I was told that there are plans to play more Front Street shows so stay tuned....in fact they will be back at Don Quixotes in Felton at the end of April (30th I think). JGB also added more dates in the Bay Area in April- San Rafael and Oakland I believe the weekend of the 22nd. Lots of good music coming up!
