Guest TheBearsPaintball
I'm putting together a collection of songs with religious themes (shouldn't be too big right?) Suggestions on songs or specific performances would be appreciated! Heres what I have so far: Voice From On High 5-15-70 Cold Jordan 5-15-70 Gathering Flowers for the Master's Bouquet 12-26-69 Gomorrah 6-04-82 (Jerry) God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen 12-08-91 (Jerry Grisman) Turtle Dove song from the Jerry/Bob Christmas PBS special from the 80's We Bid You Goodnight date suggestion? Forum MVP FunkyBass13 Posted February 3, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted February 3, 2011 I know I'm not really helping the cause, but isn't any good Dead show a Religious experience in and of itself? I always thought so.
Advisory Board Herdygerdy Posted February 3, 2011 Advisory Board Report Share Posted February 3, 2011 isn't any good Dead show a Religious experience in and of itself? I always thought so. Amen Hallelujah Peace Other songs that bear religious statements (sorry if already listed) I'll Be With Thee Greatest Story Ever Told Gomorrah (I know this was said, but what a great tune) brain farting here, but quite a lot of Dead/JGB tunes have religious/spiritual lyrics

Forum MVP John A Posted February 3, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted February 3, 2011 I'm loath to mention it because I never liked it, but JGB's "Throw Out The Lifeline" would certainly qualify.
Forum MVP Michael Doc Watson Posted February 4, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted February 4, 2011 ...Palm Sunday- only played Mar 18-19 in 78 Wow ! That's a surprise to me. It's such a good song on the "Cats Under the Stars" album...played twice on the CD version I have....a CD that just keeps finding it's way into the car player. The other day I was thinking how it would be cool if Terripin Nation would play the whole "Cats" album on Sunday morning at Grateful Fest. religious songs from that JGB CD which has "bonus material"... Palm Sonday Rain ( maybe we can count this one) Gomorrah Magnificant Sanctuary Band I'll Be With Thee Mighty High Down Home and ending with an alternate take of Palm Sunday Peace and Love Doc

Pugdog
"When considering particular songs that use biblical imagery we find songs that have a theme running throughout all the verses, and songs that use only short references to biblical material. Estimated Prophet, Sampson and Delilah, My Brother Esau, The Greatest Story Ever Told, We Bid You Goodnight, Cold Jordan, and Blues for Allah exemplify songs of the first instance. One More Saturday Night, Eyes of the World, Playing in the Band, Throwing Stones, Deep Elem Blues, Knockin
Guest TheBearsPaintball
Thanks for the response! I've enjoyed looking up all these songs and even hearing a handful I hadn't before! I'll post when I'm finished with it, maybe make it available somehow.
