Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted January 27, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 27, 2011 I think a lot of folks already have some damn fine recordings of both spring and fall 77' Indeed. That is probably why it won't happen. But think of the quality of the $450 gargantuan coffee table box set! My favs - been getting off on 25 (New Haven & Springfield, 5-10 and 5-11-78) yesterday and today. Then there is the ever popular 15, the afore-mentioned Englishtown, and 14 (Boston 11-30 and 12-2-73...a highlight of my freshman year). Then there is 3 and 29 (had to drop out of tour to walk at college graduation so missed Pembroke and Lakeland). Damn, once you get started on this topic it is hard to stop...cue Streisand "The Way We Were"...

Well Chuck, It's because those heady days are indelibly printed on our souls...for me the combo of age, footloose freedom, incredible mind opening drugs and the and at the very heart of it all..the center of that universe in the moment was the Grateful Dead...pulling us in and bringing us together like staples to a magnet.. Forum MVP cm_hayden Posted January 27, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 27, 2011 Always enjoyed DP 1, even if for no other reason it was number one. But for pure listening pleasure DP 13 continues to rock my boat.
SeanAY
Englishtown '77 is just a sonic assault! I'll go off the beaten path and make mention of the first song, because I can't think of a more thumpin', more rockin' version of "Promised Land" in '77! The "Peggy-O" is sweet to your soul, and the "Half-Step" is a sharp, monster rendition. It's one of my favorite first sets of the year because of the dichotomy between the alternating Bobby and Jerry songs; Jerry's tenderness and chemistry is really special at this show. He makes the hairs on your arms stand up during FOTD, Peggy-O, Half Step, etc. Meanwhile, this is Bobby at his bombastic best in '77, showing substance and showmanship can go hand in hand. It all comes to a head in "Music," where Jerry matches Bobby's spastic energy for a crackling set closer. When I think of what the official releases have the potential to do, I think of this show. It's like someone shoved a rocket up this band's ass while strapping jumper cables to their fingernails! The energy is astounding.

Oh yea!!!!! How could I forget #12? I have an alarm clock that plays CDs. I once had the Eyes from DP12 as my wake up song. Problem was, I would just lay there listening. I get up earlier than my wife and I was waking her up somewhere in a 12 minute Eyes. It had to go. If I'm trying to teach someone about Phil, I alway play them this Eyes. daytrip16
DP # 30 March 25 is a Hells Angels benefit party. Donna Jeans first show. First set the band plays behind BO DIDDLEY. First and only ARE YOU LONELY FOR ME BABY. The jams during Bo Diddley set are outrageous. Guest jazz-man
Is DP#2 the one from Halloween Columbus, OH? Killer. And the one from Winterland that has disc 2 (I think) open with Terrapin where Phil is rocking the chords. Nice Bertha opener (with Close Encounters tuning before it). Are there no more DP's? Is it all Road Trips and Vault releases now?
