nice...thanks Rick. Haven't spent a ton of time listening to 68 stuff as its more difficult to find good recordings....I think I actually have this one on disc somewhere. Guess its time for me to get with the times and buy an iPod. Maybe it will be a new years resolution along with learning how to knit.

Very true. It is tough to find good recordings. I pretty sure some of the 66 and 67 violas were smoking hot as well, but I have been unable to find one I enjoy as much as the 2-2-68 Crystal

Heres a good one from 7-16-66. Sound quality is good. It has some of the old school dancing in the streets keyboard sound. I prefer the 68 and even possibly the DSO one from penns peak, but Jerry's playing is frenzied and delicious.

2/2/68 is one of the hottest versions of this song for sure. Another debaucherous version that stands up to that is 1/23/68, which is included on some Road Trips release. There was some discrepancy about the date as I recall...I think it's on the bonus disc. Eaton gave one of his DATS from that date to the world (it's moving towards the top of one of my waiting-to-listen-to spindles even though it's been out for 2 years) but I don't think it had the Viola. Things can get confusing about these early shows with some of the songs as to the exact date--I think Eaton may be one of the only people who really knows for sure.

Here is one of the earliest rehearsals we have from 66. It's kind of cool because you can hear the birth of Viola Lee Blues right in front of your ears. It begins its transformation in '66 from a traditional cover into the monster we see in 68, and the beginning of the beginnings of that metamorphosis was caught on tape ("Caterpillar into chryselis, or pupa and then...beauty.").

I wonder why can't I stop quoting Hannibal Lecter.

It's the last track that is so interesting. Pigpen is even singing and if I recall correctly he plays some harmonica too, somewhere on this song, which is pretty cool. Garcia throws idea after idea out there and everyone just follows along. The band has hardly just hatched as well and it's pretty clear that most are trying to catch up to Garcia, Pigpen and Billy but for those who love this song, it's a worthy listen.

I'll see if I can find that monster Viola I was talking about for ya Rick...I think I know the friend I lent it to (he's nearer to you right now than I).

(Our Billy wants to change too, Clarice.)
