John K (Band) At The State Theater

Hey all,

Anyone venturing to the State Theater in Falls Church, VA this Saturday (December 11, 2010) to catch the John K Band? I've been to a couple of their other shows (first time as a band in Adams Morgan and a NORML benefit with Tom Contstanten in D.C.) earlier this year and thought they were terrific. Having a JGB-style band playing in the local area is something I've been dreaming of for a long time. Then, to have John playing lead guitar? Wow, doesn't get much better.

Should be a great time -- they choose some really cool covers (e.g., The Police "Walking in Your Footsteps") -- plus all the great R&B-flavored jams you know and love. Anyway, I'd be up for a drink or something beforehand and live not too far away (15 min drive), so let me know if anyone is up for a meet-up or to talk some music. There is a good Irish bar caddy-corner to the State or we can make other arrangements as necessary and/or amenable.

Thanks for the heads up. As this is my favorite venue in the country (and it's 15 mins from my house), I do believe I will check out this show.

I sure wish DSO would revisit the State Theater..............hint hint......my patience with the 9:30Club is nearly extinguished.

My VERY good buddy who lives near this venue wrote a review for our GD email rant of burners and I thought I would pass it along here, just for the people who are interested. Just imagine one of the funniest people on earth when picturing the narrator

OKAY sports fans (800 USA DEAD tip of the hat...) here's the report from Falls Church VA....Buckle in and read (Stone won't read this cuz I write too much....but who cares - the rest of you can enjoy)

first of all ....take a quick glance up at the list..YES that is WAY TO GO HOME.....making an appearance....maybe the first time I've HEARD the song in 17 years...thankfully --short of maybe a DSO show-..and one .i've happily forgotten....

AND you'll notice some unrecognizable ones that are JK originals. Both off which were two of the HIGHLIGHTS of the night for me.

Let John Sing....is not required here - it is a foregone conclusion.

It was refreshing and oddly and obviously congruous to the way Jerry had JGB at his disposal to play songs he wanted and sing EVERY song and solo his fucking brains out with no holds barred.

JK did just that....

VENUE:

First off the State Theater is our home venue and one of those sad barely-realized suburban theater redeux's that hosts horrible cover bands 80% of the time and bad jam rock and old guys who don't really make the big time in DC anymore (i.e. Johnny Winter, David Allen Coe - classy acts..that no one sees OR too many old fat Virginans go see - minus the DC hipsters) DSO was a frequent tupac there...from 2005>2007 before they mysteriously stopped booking there and played only in DC or down in Richomnd / Norfolk area.

AND Baltimore at the lame as Ram's Head Live. Its crowd is always easier, kinder, gentler than DC 930 club (hated, dreaded venue) but still somehow LAMER,nerdier..and WAY less musically knowledgeable

THE SHOW

We stood about 10-15 Ft away...i row off the stage...which is barely chest high...and there were only a few folks down there at the beginning

We have seen him play 1) "Nobody Told Me" with Terrapin Nation on NYE 2007 (DSO's alter ego band - Stone and I witnessed at Glenside, PA)

but he LOVES this song. he plays it a lot and it was a nod to the John Lennon anniversary of his death...and he nails the song...

and kills the vocals and FOUND A WAY TO SCRUB the crap out of solo late in the song (those who are lame enough, including ME to check JK's Facebook Page will see the scrub shot, taken RIGHT in front of me by Gabe Jones, my buddy --we BOTH noted this moment as an EARLY statement of where we were going)

awesome

2)Tin Roof Shack is a bluesy number that rules...showing that the BAND itself was ok....keyboard guy was pretty good / decent..BASSIST....was a ginerbread gangly badass...who despite some bouncy stage moments was a ripper and a talented guy and made a solid backbone for John to play against.

it was, in fact bassit, Larry Joseloff's bday..

Larry Joseloff's main band is called "10 Ft. Tall" Keller that's for your trivia bank and mentioned here solely to delve into needless information.

band got warmed up and together here...

NEXT things got GREAT with a JK orig song 3)"What's Become of Mary?" which I fucking loved. a great Whoaaaaa vocal part and some AWESOME FAT soloing.....good lyrics...and a feel good groovy song...he got going here.

next the hippie-go-lucky anthem 4)"Any Road" from George Harrison's last record....which is great. but full of zen-hippie imagery lyrics.

JK sems to love this song too.

again more great soloing...and very great vocal performance

NOTEWORTHY: around this time I noticed JK was BARELY opening his eyes as he sang. the crowd was not crushing or too big at all BUT my theory was too many weirdos are TAKING FUCKING PICTURES of him ( including my buddy Gabe) which becomes sort of distracting.

too many idiots think they need 300 + photos per song of everyone who performs. ...I don't get it personally..... he gets into it, as we've seen before which is also a huge part of it....but I hate digital cameras for what theyve done to the first rows of small venue shows.

people don't treasure the moment at all and are too busy catching their picture for stupid facebook ( which has some sick pics of this show btw! go there NOW!)

ok what happened next was fucking great... John announces the following: "The next song I wanted to be our first Grateful Dead song of the night....and just so you all know....Robert Hunter did write the words to this song.." as if to give a disclaimer for the reaction...as he lauches into the oddly, eerily familiar into to 5) WAY TO GO HOME.......

(after I stopped laughing VERY hard for about 10 sec) I realized JK would not only SING this better than it ever WAS sung by Vince, but of course he NAILED the bridges . changes of this song with his band 4000 times better than the GD and got NASTY on the guitar parts. A VERY VERY amazing reworking of a song we've all had to realize was the best of the Vince tunes..which is listed as the first example definition of "oxymoron" in Oxford English dictionaries.

it was funky, bluesy and great.

I sung along LOUDLY despite the odd glances from the people next to me....during the WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to go HOME parts.....

THEN we went JGB style with a CRUSHING 6) That's What Love....w/ guest Sax player...who was ok but sounded great a la Legion of Mary...but only 5000% less awesome than uber-burner Martin Fiero.

I think the drummer's abilities were stretched thin here...but Larry the bassist ripped and JK just sodomized the solo slot here...

the keyboard guy was NO Melvin Seals ( he looked more like a Development Office Finance Director or something..) and chose the Korg keyboard piano sound vs a B-3 sound...so it was a different thing...

NEXT UP: here's the deal I ALWAYS LOVED AND WISHED JGB HAD played the following song and it freaks me out a little to see JK playing it now..I was SUPER INTO THIS TUNE IN EARLY 90'S and played it all the time and wondered if Jerry would ever bust it out.

Lyrically its a bit incoherent and rambling with stream-of-consiousness lyrical flow that he was never particularly keen on....

I'm taking about 7) "Cleaning Windows" the Van Morrison song.

(I had seen it before on setlists and SHOUTED this out about 10 sec before they did it...not realizing until later they were on a setlist.

I thought I was badass. but alas just guessed right)

I just dig hearing the songs he's choosing...and hearing him PLAY so well along to songs that ARE the type JGB messed with...such a treat to get him out of the Furthur / DSO box.....and out and loose to play what he wants.

this is the real deal with this....This is what made JGB so cool. was songs from other people I LOVED getting guitar work that just developed a given song into something new...and with the Garcia flair.

I really think this could be a fun continuum for JK and something that keeps things moving in a good direction juxtaposed to his Furthur assignment and touring duties.

next up 8) Larry Joseleff ( trying to get all on here to memorize this name) bday greeting from crowd , with JK laughing his ass off, which I'd never witnessed..

AND then a Feel Like Dynamite.

JK sings everysong of course but he REALLY got down on this, vocally...and growled alot...a la Merl Saudners ( I miss Merl -- the GAMH shows I saw were epic and my 8-1-2000 limo ride around town with him talking to me about his friendship with Jerry was EASILY one of the most incredible conversations I've every had in my life)

set ended strong....crowd got thicker and more burnt...and we went to 1/2 time.

* note the 45+ min intermission was painful and too long....and was due to extended stage and sound checking for the tribal drum crew

they opened set 2 with

9) How Sweet...and then an oldy orig song JK introduced as one he wrote 15 years ago with Hairball Willie called 10) Sister Smiles...pretty cool...then some others....

noteworthy was the 15) 2001 (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) which is a Phish cover I guess? <deep sigh> which was admittedly cool...to hear John playing the CRESHENDO guitar licks of this familiar piece....but (sorry Keller) FUCK Trey Anastassia or whatever his name is. Not sure why this is in the setlists now... but

the other cool thing was during a slowed down FUNKIFIED 13) "Women R" John did a noteable lick of the VOCAL lines of "Dixie Chicken"

I SWORE he was gonna do a sandwich of this...but he did not. it was retooled enough to NOT sound like a GD cover.

which was a cool choice for JK.....and done throughout the evening.

I know this is an exhausting review...but still I was psyched to get to see JK back in a small room with about 20 people around me for the first few songs for the first time in a long while......

he rips and plays so well and I've seen him at least 10-12 times at the State with DSO at close range and miss this now that he's part of Furthur.

You bastards in SF get this at rehearsal shows but we're only gonna get these nights it looks like..which will be fun.

as long as Katy and John K live out here....there will be some DC heat to check out. AND hopefully some nights where Melvin gets booked with them again.....and guests show up.

could be a cool new thing...I want to see even smaller places with his band...

and GET HIM TO START A BLUEGRASS SIDE BAND where he'll play fiddle and acoustic....and do some old & in the way covers and play the bluegrass outdoor show circuit in the late spring summer.

that's on my wish list.

i HOPE YOU all read this at work. It is far more important than anything you do.

sorry it was so long. And the full show was not reviewed.

ps- BEST THING HEARD YELLED from the AUDIENCE:

two guys yelling.." I'M GAY FOR JOHN K!" which was so stupid it was brilliant.

This is so great. You and your friends should have a public blog, your writing styles are very readable and the information you give out is really interesting.

Thanks all! Peace out!

I was there for the show. I had a great time.........it was great to see John play again. I had been front and center for Furthur in Fairfax on 2/15/10 (the best reserved seats I've ever scored.....thank you!)

My girlfriend and I both enjoyed the moderate crowd and the awesome venue.......LOVE THE STATE THEATRE!!!!! (hate 9:30 Club)

John appeared to be relaxed. Like another poster said, it was nice to see him untethered from the (perceived) confines of the Furthur apparatus.

Fun song selection. Loved the bass player!

Thanks John. Great to see you posting here. I look forward to seeing you around town more often.

Congratulations on an amazing career.

Giving it a listen right now, great stuff. The sound quality of the recording is pretty decent. The "That's What Love Will Make You Do" rips, and I love that he's covering Poi Dog Pondering, one of my favorite bands. JK, if you read this I think that you'd do an outstanding cover of "Complicated", so consider it :)

Another drive by political post....

The Republicans don't have to come with a great candidate. Obama will probably lose due to how ineffective the American public views his administration to have been during the period of Democratic control of both the House and Senate. The American public has made a statement in both the Obama election (08) and the midterm elections (10) that they desire change and want to see something different from Washington. Unfortunately, the Democrats and Republicans are in bed with one another and our mostly concerned with maintaining their strangle hold on power in America. The legislature, the executive, and the judiciary no longer provide checks on one another and support one another in the desecration of the Constitution of United States. If Americans really want change to be realized, just about everyone currently in power in the United States needs to be removed. However, Americans appear to be too complacent, lazy, or distracted to take a stand anymore. Hell, many Americans have never read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Therefore, few Americans know and/or realize that this is not the America that the Founding Fathers envisioned. We have reached a point in American history where we must decide to have a peaceful revolution and replace all those currently in power or accept that the great American experiment was a failure and stop pretending that America has vastly different values than the other political structures of the world. The terrorist proved that faced with the possibility of violence American governments (legislatures, executives, and judiciaries) will remove our liberties and the American public will stand idle and let it happen. Hopefully, the people will soon realize that the greatness of America does not stem from military might or economic power, but from the acceptance of Natural Law and the freedom of man. The Founding Fathers believed that our rights and freedom did not come from the government, but from the Creator and that no government could justifiably make laws that infringed upon these freedoms. Vote for Obama (probably the Democrat's candidate, although they may ask him not to seek reelection and the primaries could be close) or vote for the winner of the Republican primary; you will simply be voting for business as usual and they will continue to legislate away your freedom and break their own laws while doing so. Just my 2 cents. Sorry for the drive-by political post.

If you care to continue this conversation and I imagine that most don't, please start a thread in the politics forum. JK and his band and those seeking information on them don't deserve to be inundated with a political discussion. Once again, sorry I know this isn't the right place for this.

Harrumph! Too right, they're both corrupted sides of the same coin that tell us what we want to hear while doing what they wish while remaining in the pockets of the corporations and their lobbyists which have only their bottom line, and not our best interests as a people or a nation, at heart.

/end political statement

As far as JKB is concerned, I stand by my desire to hear them do more Phish, Poi Dog, and original music!

Thanks...that's nice of you to say.

It's also true, I very much enjoyed reading you wax philosophic on "Stella Blue." I consider myself to be a decent writer and enjoy scratching that itch from time to time, but I'm not sure I could hold a candle to your eloquence, at least as it relates to The Dead, though I'd imagine it stretches to other subjects as well :).
