Can we get the poll on this to get some form of stats? How about if we did a whole tour of elective set list as well?

Eaton's got a poll going , originals vs. GD sets ... 33 to 26 w/originals leading , but some of us are flip flopping as we think about it , so you probably can't go by us here , Dino ... :D

sure, yes to all of the above. New ideas, freshness, creativity are all very appealing notions. Too much prediction leads to choosing other priorities over certain shows because it loses that "fear of missing out"

as far as fan-submitted setlists, I'm not sure how that would work for a whole tour....would seem like a huge gamble on the band's part and difficult to coordinate. But I could see doing 1 show to get a little fan involvement. Would probably have to limit submissions as well so there aren't tons of setlists to review....

I voted yes for original set lists.

I voted no for fan submissions and terrapin nation tour.

I loved the TN set at Gfest and I would love to see some more TN, but I'm not interested in a whole tour. I would certainly enjoy DSO expanding their live music repertoire and I know they would deliver classics, unknowns, and originals at a high level, but in the end, I still prefer GD and I wouldn't do more than a few shows or a TN tour. I like the idea of TN opening for DSO or possibly mixing one or two TN shows into a tour.

I love the way DSO plays GD and therefore, although I prefer recreations, I would still attend as many shows as I could on an all original set list tour.

I think fan submissions would be repetitive and logisitcally a pretty large undertaking. A program could be designed to collect the submissions fairly simply, but avoiding repetitiveness and deciding the number of songs for a show couild be difficult. I prefer to let the band handle this responsibility for the most part. Like someone previously said, maybe one show on a tour with fan votes or doing fan votes for the filler like DSO has already done.

Please pardon my ignorance but what is Terrapin Nation? Someone on this forum told me but I forgot.

its the name the band goes under when they choose to play non-dead stuff- some mixed in with Dead stuff too.

The most recent one was at the Ledges I believe July 1- with some really different song selections. Prior TN shows were mostly comprised of Jerry Band, The Band, John Lennon, CSNY, etc....stuff very much in the same type of genre as the GD.

This is the Ledge's setlist:

streaming.gif 07/01/2010 Nelson Ledges Quarry Park, Garrettsville, OH Setlist: Terrapin Nation Celebration Mississippi queen (Mountain) ; Peace Train (Cat Stevens) ; End Of The Line (Traveling Wilburys) ; Lake Shore Drive (Aliotta-Haynes-Jeremiah) ; Doctor My Eyes (Jackson Brown) ; Evangeline (The Band w/ Emmylou Harris) ; Rock The Casbah (The Clash) ; Ride Captain Ride (Blues Image) ; She Thinks I Still Care (George Jones)

(Nothing But) Flowers (Talking Heads) ; Skin It Back (Little Feat) ; For What It's Worth (Buffalo Springfield) ; Mansion On The Hill (Neil Young) ; Taking Care Of Business (Bachman-Turner Overdrive)

Encore: Run Mary* (by Dark Star Orchestra and Robert Hunter) ; The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)

Notes: * Dark Star Orchestra original song written with Robert Hunter first time played

Prior to that - check setlists from mexicali blues- thats where many of the TN shows happened- here's a couple setlists:

Show: 1432 • 07/15/2007 Mexicali Blues Cafe, Teaneck, NJ Setlist: 07-15-2007 Original Setlist 1: Cripple Creek, Dear Prudence, Easy Wind, Money Money, Pride of Cucamonga, The Business, Hrd Rain's Gonna Fal, Bobby McGee, Lazy River Road, Hey Joe tease*, BE Women**, Music**

2: Shakedown, Ray Gun> Playin> Drums> Space> WRS Preluse> WRS Part 1> Let It Grow> American Spring> Playin

Encore: Stir It Up

Filler: None

Setlist: 11-26-2006 Original Setlist 1: How Sweet It Is, Good Lovin, Catfish John, Easy Wind, King Bee, Ophelia, Bird Song, You Ain't Woman Enough, Memphis Blues, Touch

2: Second That Emotion, Sing Your Blueas Away, Sailor> Saint> Help> Slipknot> Franklin's> Drums> Space> Who Do You Love> Walking In Your Footsteps> Miracle> Days Between> Gloria

Encore: Sisters and Brothers

Filler: None

Notes: Special guest keyboardist Rob Barraco -

I'd LOVE to see some TN shows by this incarnation of DSO....I think the Zen Tricksters had some really killer setlists that incorporated material other than the Dead and I'd love to see DSO take some of that on since Mattson is in the band....

And I'll add to this that there's one song that Mattson wrote that I'd also LOVE to see this band do....called Shine your Light...beautiful song with a great jam....

agree

I think originals should include more non-GD material

In an 8 song set, why not have 3-4 non-GD songs not currently being played by other bands at the level DSO can preform them at?

whether it be classics, unknowns, or anything that is new and fresh

and with these songs

have MORE LISA singing LEAD!

imho, Lisa is the ace in the hole for DSO

and she is not singing enough

lead or backup

How about an all Lisa tour?

with her out every night singing songs out of her current repertoire

and new songs DSO has never played before

The early TN set lists look great, but I'm not sure those set lists couldn't be performed as DSO.

Agreed. IMO, I feel the band is in a place where they could venture out of the norm....I guess there are a lot of questions floating around- do fans want more straight up GD- will that sell more tickets, or will more originality sell more tickets? But the way I see it is that the band playing at its best is going to sell the most tickets and I feel especially with this new incarnation of DSO, that they are their best doing the electives. Granted, there are some exceptions- like the 69 show I saw this weekend and the pre-73 stuff.

and I will say this, after reading some of the killer electives played on the east coast, there are folks out here that were really wishing they could get an elective rather than a recreation this tour.....we get a lot of GD out here....some dance to the GD every other weekend or so. A whole bunch of electives would be really well-received!!!

oh and as far as Lisa goes, AMEN Bobby. I don't know how many times her filler performance came up in conversation at the hotel after the show Sat. night. That woman has some pipes and a ton of soul behind them. She could rock some Gracie or Janis just fine. There is a Grace Slick solo album floating around out there that I have heard bits and pieces from and she could do some of that material beautifully. Or I believe as someone else on this board would agree with too- they could dig deep to the Great Society stuff- could totally hear this band do Sally Go Round the Roses. Stick that right in between an Eleven and Cryptical and you got some real psychedelic elective material.

This may be unfair to the band, but I'd like to see Terrapin Nation open for DSO too. It would be like the last New Year's run with Donna and Jeff opening for them. That was heaven. I'd settle for less than a whole set, 45 minutes?

Like dancinfool, I'm in it for the dance. Doesn't matter how beautiful it is, if I can't dance to it I won't return. I love Jeff's playing and have no problem dancing to it. At aaaaaaall. He has made me laugh several times as he took over my marionette strings. The early shows are new material to all of them and will become more danceable with time. Right now they are intellectual candy and I felt truly honored that they played one at my home venue.

I agree that we have not been getting enough Lisa. Terrapin Nation opening could give her some air time. Or even a Lisa opening band. Wouldn't that be something? Kevin should be singing all the Phil parts. In my Darkstar Wars movies, Kevin is Yoda; there is wisdom to be had in his voice.

The others are Princess Leisa, Hand Solo, Luke Keyswalker, R2DNo, Robboc3PO, and Chewea. No insult intended towards anyone (just a little giggle, just a little light).

I think they need to keep mixing up the originals with the recreations. As someone else stated, the majority of people go to see Grateful Dead music and would be dissappointed to find out they were getting a Terrapin Nation show. I would like to see more Terrapin Nation material mixed in, but I think it should be the filler material at the end as opposed to an opening set.

"Well", said Pooh, "what I like best", and then he had to stop and think. Because although eating honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than you were, but he didn't know what it was called.

DSO brings me joy....I could care less what they play. I'll be at the shows with bells on.

Originals preferred over recreations.

Terrapin Nation shows are an incredible treat and the more the better.

I would also love to hear the band take on some Airplane with Lisa up front channeling Grace.

Knowing what the recreated show will be before the show would be a let down for me. Even recreated shows are a bit of a let down for me. I prefer surprises, and even more the novelty of different songs from different eras that Original shows allow.

That all being said, a 69 recreation trumps everything...

I'm not sure that an all Terrapin Nation tour would be a good idea. I thoroughly enjoyed the set I saw at GFest though. As someone else said, I think Terrapin Nation would be good as a filler or perhaps an opening set or even a show or two on tour... but not an entire tour. I think the people that want to see DSO (or at least most typical fans) want to see the music of the Grateful Dead performed at a high level. At least for me, the music of the Grateful Dead is what speaks to me and DSO is the best at playing this music at this particular moment in time in my opinion. The Terrapin Nation stuff is just good ole fun that I can certainly groove with and I would definitely enjoy any and every TN set I see... but what can I say? I'm a deadhead...

As for all elective tours. I'd be very much down for that. I love the recreations and electives both so much. I'm really split down the middle with having to choose between them. Both have a special characteristics that I enjoy very much. I think the freedom and creativity really opens up with the electives and that could be a lot of fun for both the band and the fans (for an entire tour.) But then again, I think recreating GD setlists is one of the selling points of the band. In the end, it shouldn't really matter too much what the setlist is as long as they play the music of the Dead and they play it well, which they always do. :)

And the fan submitted setlists. I like the idea but I think it is really just too much of a process. I know it's quite the tedious and arduous task for Rob E to create and pick the setlists but he's been doing it for a while now and I have all my faith and trust in him and I think that would be the best route to take. Fan submitted fillers are a good idea as done on previous tours though.
