I was hoping their would be more recent DSO shows uploaded onto archive.org by now. I would really like to get a chance to listen to more of the shows they've been doing lately, especially since Mattson is really melding with the group so well. Any tapers out there that might have any info on this? The last show thats been uploaded is from July 31.

Many old school tapers don't want to tape the shows as the say "why tape DSO when you can listen to the original". We know there is people out there that want to hear this stuff. Plus you can't listen to our elective shows as they are the original. Releasing everything we record is not practical because it is time consuming to mix and master the long shows. ... And we care too much about how it sounds. We don't release sub par recordings.

My suggestion is that more of you need to pick up the taping hobby and become tapers for your fellow DSO enthusiasts.

Perhaps a taper can shed some light into the proper taping process for others wanting to be able to do this. It's important to know how t do it right.

There is more any more people video taping and there is a bunch of new stuff available on youtube (thanks go to those who do this). However, sometimes the audio is not that great. The thing to do here is to match up a tapers recording to the video someone films for better sound.

And.... if you want to get a little more sophisticated, you can grab a few of your buddies to bring out their video camera and you each could concentrate on a particular few shots. You then can edit the video together and grab a tapers recording and have a nice live shot concert. And if the video is good enough, maybe you could even (possibly) convince us to drop our recording on to your video. Someone would have to be into editing video for fun but it can be done.

Here's a recent recording of mine of The Schwag at Schwagstock 45 this month with Stu Allen and Melvin Seals...

http://www.archive.org/details/schwag2010-09-17 (Soundboard)

(Listen to Melvin's tone in "Feel Like a Stranger"!!! Unreal!!! It turned me into a puddle...and those around me slowly followed suit. ;)

I just started taping about a year ago and it is daunting at first (what isn't?) and then it all gets fun! You faithful Starhead followers should invest in a lil setup. Here's what I went with and the built in mics are great...I just raise it with a mic stand, set it, and try not to forget it! :icon14:

This bundle has just about everything you need to get goin!

Here's a straight AUD recording (my very first!!) of a front porch acoustic show at Schwagstock 44 using the built in mics and a simple mic stand

:)

I'd love to hear some more of these Mattson shows myself!

Shit dude, my roommate has an H4 and is a sound engineering major. His recordings came out pretty good. I'll ask him a few questions and see if i can invest in a taping rig somehow. The plot thickens...

These recordings ain't too shabby. and by the way, Melvin is fucking killing it on this shit.

im with vorty on this.....its time the casual fan takes the initiative to contribute to the taping instead of expecting others to do for you....its not as hard or daunting as one may think.....it may take away from your experience at a show or make you feel better knowing that not only did you see the show but you also have it on tape to share with your friends......my initial interest came from wanting to hear again what i just saw....of course that was during the casette master days where you could pop it into your tape deck for the ride home...

id be happy to help anyone who wants to learn......stop by the truck at load in and we can discuss...the gears on board, just need an operator....i vote joseph since hes there all the time anyway....

theres a bunch of shows at home on dat for those who want to volunteer to transfer/upload.....im outta time by the time break comes around....

I concur that was HILARIOUS.On a mention I have thought about trying to get into taping.Backin the day I had several taper friends,I remember one day at telluride with his mics on the visor of his hat.Had to stand very still allday.Never thought hed make it but he did.Seriosly though I am functionally deaf in my left ear and my right ear is starting to go.So here is my question does any taping devices have the technology to set levels for me.I would hate to invest money for a futile effort.

most, if not all recording devices, weather tape or digital, have level meters that are set by the taper manually by visually sighting the sound levels on the screen, not so much by what they are hearing.

once youve taped a show or two, and transfered it, you will find the comfort spot on your level meter. from then on its "set it and forget it" as you will have the confidence to roll the tape and enjoy the show withour worrying so much about your levels. you will have to check every once in a while to make sure the sound volume of the room doesnt change too much, usually its a small change in volume as the sound board tech usually has it dialed in at soundcheck, but you still need to check it.

a good place to learn more and look for gear, either new or used is:

www.taperssection.com

if you have questions, someone on that board will surely try to help you out with your quest for quality taping techniques, gear etc...

Speaking of taping, watch this!

 Sounds like my Girlfriend....i love the mono-tone voices!!! Totally makes the video.

Anywho, here are a couple more of my recordings from Schwagstock 45...

This is David Gans' Friday set:

http://www.archive.org/details/dgans2010-09-17.acoustic

:icon14:

(check out "Down to Eugene" and "China Bird-Star Melody" if you only have time for a few) ;)

I couldn't think of a name for the medley, you can hear Gans loop in Cassidy, Chinacat, Dark Star, Bird Song, etc all into a cosmic fusion of bliss.

:icon14:

Oh, here's Jimmy Tebeau's (founder of The Schwag and bass player for both The Schwag and JGB) Sunday Solo Acoustic Front Porch Session...check out "Mountains of the Moon>Deal"...it covers nice ground. Oh, and he uses only an acoustic bass for Big River through a Camp ZOE Blues improv....it's pretty cool. Nice acoustic Cassidy and Desolation row too!

I'll have Saturday's show along shortly...Seeing Melvin Seals play Dead is a wonderful thing. The guy's a groove machine...throw Stu in the mix and buckle up!
