P2inboulder
Geez...Nobody mentioned the 9/15/82 show. Probably the best CC show other than '76. Playing > Crazy Fingers set opener. First Touch as an encore.

Forum MVP John A Posted August 30, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted August 30, 2010 First shows are always a little tricky. In hindsight, they look great but when we remember the show....there isn't a lot (about the music) we can remember. Indeed. My 1st show was 10/20/84 Syracuse. My most lasting memory about the music was the Revolution encore. I remember thinking, "how can these guys dare play this song and not bother to learn it first." Listening to the tape years later, I probably should have been a little more impressed with, for example, the Jack Straw jam.
Brian NJ
for those who were in attendance at the la bamba show.. i wondered recently what was the general initial reaction when jerry busted out la bamba? was it "this is cheesy" or "FUUUUUUUUUUUCK YAAA!" ?? Hey Jordan Howsit? One of my few memories from that time period. When I first heard La Bamba my reaction was WTF then turned into a smile that grew to lip cracking laughing. If my memory is correct and it may not be, I think the run at MSG that year had only one repeat song out of like 7or 8 nights ----La Bamba. Pugdog
That's gotta be cool for those of you that were at the original GD shows and then years later at a DSO recreation of the same exact show...ultimate flashback material! I've never even thought of that particular aspect to DSO's recreation philosophy/approach...Damn, that would be awesome...I hate thinking it is not possible for me to ever have this experience...ever...it just cannot happen... How many of you folks out there have had this experience? My only luck is perhaps coming across a SCI cover band in a decade or 3 that recreates String Cheese Incident shows and it happening to be one that I had seen...hmmm...yeah...not much of a chance at this point. I guess my strangest dso show was my first dso show.....as we were moving thru the show I realized once eaton did the mama>mex looks like rain ( 3 bobbys in a row ) that I may have been at the original GD show? Sure enough, as the second set started, it became clear that the show we were listening to was a nassau show in 1981 ( 5-9-81 )..For the rest of the show I racked my tiny little brain to try and figure out the exact date..It was kind of fun...I turned to my buddy Dan Brustein and said "I think it was 5-9-81"..once it was announced, he looked at me and mumbled " you have problems ! " I was hooked after that..not only was the show outstanding, I finally found the music again, some 6 years after Garcia died.. Love DSO!!

Stargazer
after seeing the 2 spectrum august '80 shows we told our parents we were goin to dewey for the weekend but somehow ended up at the cap centre for the 8-31-80 show did pretty much the same excuse thing the next weekend for drive the up to lewiston maine...young and free were the days.... i personally thought the cap center was a suck place for shows, seeing as its near d.c. with crappy sound, hard security and blah shows, it wasnt very friendly at all.. at anypoint during the 87 la bamba phase i was tempted to break down my gear and split......velveeta deluxe! this time slot would have been better utilized with some classic/traditional material as opposed to what was popular on the big screen... Wow, 39 posts on a Cap Center thread and only the first time my sentiment about the nightmarish security has been echoed. A lack of friendliness indeed. But I don't concur with you on La Bamba. Just a nice little indication that Jerry was having a blast on stage, jovial and (temporarily) free of hard drugs. The "time slot" would just have been a few extra bars of Good Lovin'. zwyts
fitting playing cap center shows at such a hellish, unfriendly venue as 930 club.....It is unfortunate that DSO can't play State theater anymore I assume for monetary reasons....though I understand they are not a volunteer band and need to make money to make music best cap center show I attended was 3/15/90, though I have a soft spot for the underrated 3/9/92 as a sidenote, kind of a bummer to do these shows on Yom Kippur in such a heavily Jewish area.....It will prevent my attendance, but I understand scheduling is tough and there are many considerations to be weighed
