Covers

Not sure if this belongs here or in other bands but I thought this might be fun and interesting. We all know that the GD played as many covers as they did originals and as it has been said many time, it was sometime hard to tell what was a cover and what was original because Garcia had that special ability to make any song he played sound like his own.

So my questions is, with the exception of Grateful Dead versions of covers, who has taken someone else's song and just fucking ripped it. Now this could be something like Joe Cocker doing his own take on Help From My Friends or Hendrix doing Watchtower. Doesn't have to be someone doing an original take but just someone who takes a song and really nails it. I know that there are probably a million choices, but that kind of is the point. What really does it for you.

I'll start it off with this. Not exactly an original interpretation but I challenge you to find someone other than the original to absolutely smoke this song.

Love Reign by the Who (as done by Pearl Jam)

I once seen The Missing Man Formation it was Vince with Kimock and most members of Zero do a Stones cover of You Can't Always Get What You Want. Kimock still plays this and the one I seen was on fire!

For some reason I can hear Jerry singing Honky Tonk Women... It would be too cool if DSO or TN would pull that off some time.

Johnny Cash covering Will Oldham's (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) "I see the Darkness" (Oldham is doing the back-up vocals)--don't watch the vid...takes away from the power of the song.

Calexico and Jim James covering Dylan's "Goin' to Acapulco"

Neil covering Bob's "Tom Thumb's Blues"

Johnny Cash covering Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat"

Listen to the ending for the surprise and for the incredible dueling piano and organ!

And for one of those that most definitely has the 'spook,' Neil covering Don Gibson's "Oh, Lonesome Me" ...You gotta listen to this one real loud.

Lastly, the Be Good Tanyas covering Jeremy Lindsey's "Scattered Leaves"

Slightly off subject here, but sort of appropriate...........and I swear this is true..........I saw a Viagra commercial last week and the background music was "Good Mornin' Little Schoolgirl". Blew my mind, for a myriad of reasons. Has anyone else heard Viagra "cover" this tune???

String Cheese Incident does a dank "Mighty Quinn" too...Nershi's voice is perfect for it.

Overall SCI is without question my second favorite! The moments of synchronicity during their songs and shows are matched by no other "jamband" I've encountered with the exception of the Grateful Dead themselves. I don't know if it's lyrical or just IT...I tend to believe it's the latter. They just have the magic. They have such a wide array of styles and an arsenal of artists that bring SO much heat to the table it tingles my toes and cheeks. They sound organic at times and completely spacey-funk the next. For a 6-piece band they cover worlds of ground...It's like boarding a cosmic ship on a trip across the universe with full confidence you'll end up landing with a smile on your face and renewed sense of life!

Oh....they also do a beautiful "Across the Universe" by the Beatles...and "Why Don't we do it in the Road".....Oh, and "Come Together" :icon14:

String Cheese Incident is like if The Grateful Dead had a baby with Old and in the Way and then that baby decided to have a baby with the lovechild of Phish and Keller Williams...and then you have SCI (To me) ;)

Note: I haven't even experienced an Incident live...these opinions are purely based on the plethora of live "On The Road" recordings I've been obsessively collecting and the few DVD's they've released...they're wonderful...I prefer the earlier (less electronically infused) stuff (1998-2002 ish)

Sorry for the threadjack...I will start a topic in the Other Bands section devoted to the Queso in due time....esp since they're back on tour! :D

I did see this and thank the dark stars above it was not the Grateful Dead doing the song.

I did crack up though :)
