Dancin' Fool
So, I had this tape in college labeled "Best of Live Dead", acquired from who knows where. It had a version of Comes a Time that I have been in love with ever since (not that I have very many versions, if any others at all!). I was describing this Comes to a buddy who has a much more thorough grasp of the catalog than I could ever imagine, and the next time I saw him, he plops down two discs on my counter and says "here's that Comes a Time you wanted". Well, I just did not believe that it could possibly be it, as I had only described the tune as having majestic, flowing pretty piano, by I believe Keith (and that It goes right into a very uptempo Franklin's). Well, indeed it was the version I was talking about. By now, I'm sure most of you people know I'm talking about 10/15/76 Shrine Aud. My question to all of you is: are there any comparable (dare I say better?) versions out there? One reviewer mentions some versions from 5/77, and also Chula Vista '85. Before I search those versions out, I would like to know how others feel about this version, compared to others. Thanks in advance!! http://www.archive.org/details/gd76-10-15.bertrando.vernon.11655.sbeok.shnf ps....
woodpile
While I don't have any one specific show I have always been partial to 71- 72 ,I tend to like the more raw and unpolished versions.Such a beautiful song,it always puts things in perspective for me
Pugdog
It's a beautiful song... Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see? Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe." Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill, only love can fill. Been walking all morning went walking all night I can`t see much difference between the dark and light And I feel the wind And I taste the rain Never in my mind to cause so much pain. Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see? Gotta make it somehow on the the dreams you still believe." Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill, only love can fill. From day to day just letting it ride. You get so far away from how it feels inside. You can't let go cause you're afraid to fall, But the day may come when you can't feel at all. The words come out like an angry stream. You hear yourself say things you could never mean. When you cool down you find your mind. You got a lot of words you've got to stand behind. Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see? Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe." Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill, only love can fill, only love can fill, only love can fill. Forum MVP John A Posted July 16, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 16, 2010 My question to all of you is: are there any comparable (dare I say better?) versions out there? One reviewer mentions some versions from 5/77, and also Chula Vista '85. Before I search those versions out, I would like to know how others feel about this version, compared to others. Chula Vista '85 is flawed - there's a pretty serious lyrics gaffe. The 5/77 version you're alluding to is likely 5/9 in Buffalo. That puppy is "just exactly perfect." For those who like the more emotive aspects of the mid to late 80s versions, there are some good ones in '85 (better than Chula Vista certainly). I'm a big fan of 12/27/90, both for the beautiful, gradual transition out of Estimated and the great jam into drums.

Forum MVP jfolks Posted July 16, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 16, 2010 okay let me preface this with the statement that i am a self-proclaimed comes a time aficionado.. i have ranted about this song on here before, as it is my favorite grateful dead/jerry song of all time. it is my most spiritual song of the whole catalog. that 76 shrine aud CaT is okay.. but its not even close to the best. the vocals are pretty strong and the segue is cool, but there's better guitar work out there.. the best comes a time: 5-21-77 lakeland, FL... (this show is on dicks picks 29, so its not on the archive). listen to jerry's vocal.. fucking sublime.. and the first guitar solo-- HOLY SHIT BALLS! i mean this jerry solo may actually make you cry (or high, one of the 2 for sure). and my favorite post-keith comes a time is: 4-4-87. http://www.archive.o...21.sbeok.flac16 check out the hand jive that follows! happy listening! caution: listener may experience extreme happiness and euphoria

This is my favorite out of the four or five that I've studied all week. My band happens to be adding this to the catalog tomorrow night if all goes well, and I can't wait! I like Phil's work on the later 70's... the rawness of 71/72 is always appreciated but I think he made more of a song out of it in 76-78.

RB Blasphemy from one who was in attendance for 5-9-77 I actually prefer the slower matured 77 version...but it's all a big subjective grateful dead bathtub...lovely that there are so many to choose from....but jerry's falsetto on this version is super sweet! Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted July 17, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 17, 2010 Never heard of the tune.... You've probably heard it... it is the one that starts off kind of slow, has some guitar that builds for a little bit, then gets back to some more singing and guitar before it ends. It is one of those that people really like to talk during, so maybe that's thrown you off some. Not to be confused with similar songs like that Stella Blue thingie... Pugdog
I dig it slow...the gravity of each line hangs in my heart...attaches roots, and blossoms. http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-05-04.sbd.mccarthy.1321.sbefixed.shnf As far as it being THE best Hunter song...hmmmm...At times definitely I like some of the later songs...but I think it all is very subjective to the individual and their "moment". From the land of the midnight sun Where the ice blue roses grow Along those roads of gold and silver snow Howlin' wide or moaning low So many roads I know So many roads to ease my soul

Forum MVP comesatime Posted July 17, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 17, 2010 It's my favorite Hunter/Garcia song ... the lyrics are beautiful and always make me reflect on things a little whenever listening to it ... I recently downloaded DSO 2/4/10 Milwaukee on good advice from Gary ( Greyhead ) ... the whole show is a burner with a beautiful "Comes A Time " in the second set , I'm listening to it right now ... Guest jazz-man
So many good versions to listen to, like a Dead smorgasborg! I can't pick just one (but Buffalo 5-9-77 is in the lead I think). Thank folks, smiles all around.
