Forum MVP Dstone5553 Posted July 13, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 13, 2010 But if you held a gun to my head and said how many times did you see the gd, I couldn't tell you. Same here but I could tell you within a +/- of 10...but not with Garcia in general.
Forum MVP anddave Posted July 13, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 13, 2010 I distinctly recall on the lawn at Riverport, uncertain of the year, overhearing an animated debate about whether there was any significance to show count. I heard one guy hold forth: "Yes it's very important to know how many shows you have coming up!!" I liked his thinking.
Pugdog
I also forgot that I had some sparkling unused tics for the Brent Shoreline run that got cancelled when he passed and the fall '95 fall tour. Made me sad all over again. I actually had a little book that I wrote the set lists on--after the show of course. Awwww...reminds me of the JGB show that they played in it's place that has since been released on DVD and practically worn out in my DVD player... "That Lucky Old Sun" melts my heart...so does "Waiting for a Miracle"..awwww..."I Shall be Released" too. After watching the smiles Brent and Jerry exchanged and the visible/sonic/cosmic energy Brent brought to Jerry and vice versa I can't watch "Shoreline" without getting a lil misty. You're lucky to have those old stubs Man. I've started a journal of sorts where I jot setlists, thoughts, and all of the quirky lil happenings/characters....and those mindblowing moments of synchrosity I've only encountered at GD-related shows. It's going to be an encyclopedia before I hit 40.
Gus B
While not seeing Jerry does not make you less of a deadhead.....there is definitely something to be said for seeing him. No disrespect to anyone who never saw him. But boy oh boy, if you were lucky enough to see him numerous times up close and personal, you might have a different take. Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted July 14, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 14, 2010 I never saw Jerry. Anyone that reads these forums or knows my probably knows that. I am only 23 years old. I still consider myself a Deadhead. I keep ticket stubs, but not religiously. I don't care if I lose them or misplace them so I would say I have about 50% of the ticket stubs of the GD related shows I have attended. I could tell you +- 5 on how many DSO shows I have seen and a ball park on the Ratdog and Phil and Friends (probably still within in 10 because the number isn't over 30). Gus, I certainly agree with you that seeing Jerry must've been something special. While I don't think you had to see Jerry to be a Deadhead, I certainly think seeing Jerry makes you special even if you are not a Deadhead. I can still feel Jerry's presence in my day to day life and I never saw the man in my life. I guess if you were there it doesn't seem that special, but being one of 60,000 in Giants stadium would've been special to me.

Rick...ANYTIME Garcia was plugged in, and you were there to witness it, it was special. Whether you were in front of the board at a stadium in Philadelphia or Jersey or on the rail at the Warfield in San Francisco. Trust me on that. I'm sure the same can be said for those who appreciate genius and saw Charlie Parker or Duke Ellington or John Coltrane or Bob Marley or John Lennon or Stevie Wonder or Bob Dylan or Tom Waits or... Forum MVP John A Posted July 14, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 14, 2010 I just found a whole bunch of my mail order tics in the garage a few weekends ago during a spring cleaning (my wife is VERY organized). I used to bend and almost have them entirely teared for the person at the door so as to avoid their butchering of our precious tickets. I also forgot that I had some sparkling unused tics for the Brent Shoreline run that got cancelled when he passed and the fall '95 fall tour. Made me sad all over again. We're two freaks in a pod. I too did the "pre-tear bend" routine on my mail order tickets. And I too have those unused tickets from the canceled Shoreline Brent shows. I remember it was pretty cool that they sent the unused tickets back to you after issuing the refund. What's REALLY cool is a buddy of mine has all the back stage pass series from the 90s tours that form puzzles. Anybody seen those?
Rusty the Scoob
Man.... I really am jealous of you guys that got to see the big man. I believe you when you say it was special. Pugdog - That might be my favorite music DVD of all time if only John Kahn had been at that show. I just can't get past his absence.... I need to hear that fat P-bass groove that he lays down. Forum MVP John A Posted July 14, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 14, 2010 Yep - Kahn was there alright. And so were the group of linebacker sized frat boys in the row directly in front of us (about Row N; sect 102; center - so much for the "sweet spot") that were on ecstasy. Not a happy thing for the tape we were making! Once we realized how high they were, it was clear there would be no "negotiating" with them to curtail the whoops and hollers. ducats
Awww, man, all real Deadheads keep their ticket stubs. And the set lists are hand written on the back. If they've "seen Jerry" then they stopped doing this after he passed. If not, they do it for DSO. agreed-but you could'nt write the tunes down until in the lot AFTER the show - no cheating allowed. Rusty the Scoob
I feel like I might be missing something....who did you think was playing bass for JGB at that show? Nobody as far as I can tell. Kahn was just standing there holding that stupid little Steinberger with the sound turned nearly off. Just my little joke... he was so good in the 70's and 80's and then just disappeared from the mix. It frustrates me because I'd love to have that pro-quality video of him when he could still contribute.
Forum MVP John A Posted July 15, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 15, 2010 Kahn did tend to disappear in later years. Literally as well, as he seemed to hide behind the drum kit.

I think I saw 3 Giants Stadium shows and one report I remember reading was 90K. Capacity was 79k (I think) at the old Giants Stadium for a football game; add the field GA and it could have been done. I remember thinking it was outlandish at the time, but everything you read is true.....right?Dstone is exactly right, every time Jerome plugged in, wherever/whenever, was special. Even more so these days!

Even more so these days! Summer of '89 east coast stadium tour JFK, Giants Stadium, RFK. I distinctly remember a report that there were between 80,000 and 90,000 in that bowl in East Rutherford. I remember late in the 2nd set the seated crowd started to spill over the wall onto the field and it became a sardine can down on that field. It was cool to watch from above, and damn glad I wasn't on that field. Security was absolutely useless.
Guest Ammagamalin Crew
Kahn got lots of shit for helping enable Garcia. He was musical genius but definetly liked the taste..... It was probably Jerry keeping John in check and once JG was gone JKahn OD. If you think it was tough for us losing Jerry, just imagine what it was like for the mighty Kahn? (and Bobby for that matter) Remember Jerry's last show before he went into the coma in 1986 @ RFK when Bobby introduces the band during Satisfaction and then Jerry goes to the mic and says "and my all time favorite person Bob Weir!"? They were on fire that night.

They were on fire that night. Ahhhh, 86 RFK - the mud bowl. It was a toasty 98 or so in DC and people were passing out left and right. They brought out fire hoses and started spraying down the people on the field and made a huge field of mud which everyone proceeded to turn into a slip-n-slide play area. Also during the national weed drought of 86 and some joker actually tried to sell me bong resin in a cellophane wrapper - "uhhhh, I'm good bro". Bought a tour shirt (Petty, Dylan, Dead) and had it laying on the back of my hatchback - a damn firework came screaming across the parking lot and (no shit) landed directly on my shirt on the back of my car, exploded and burned a large hole in the shirt before I had a chance to wear it......
