Gus B
yes i prefer the recreations, and dating back to last year at hampton beach that's 3 consecutive electives at the same venue i understand the system they use as far as going back 5 shows/ years and making sure every show is a different era, and 3 electives in a row busted that system so to speak if the model is changing i have no issues with that, it will just affect my future participation the laryngitis issues that rob b promptly alluded to were extraneous variables that affected their decisions it seems however, so not a big deal just like how a forest fire from quebec hazed up my memorial day in massachusetts, what are you gonna do ? Sounds like a personal problem! The model was evolving years ago. For myself who has been seeing the band since 2002, its been a welcome evolution. And I know there is a BUNCH of people that agree. It keeps us on our toes and its nice to hear tunes that GD played rarely or never. Not to mention some of the setlist/song combos that have never been done before. Check the Wellmont setlist and tell me you wouldn't have wanted to see that. If you didn't enjoy Hampton because they were original shows.....seek professional help. Get used to it cause they ain't gonna stop doing original shows ANYTIME soon!
Guest wingedjoe
well i had a scary time at hampton beach, I have been seeing them here since 05 and always have had a blast. Anyways there were undercover cops in the venue, they one i ran into was under 30 and looked just like a fan. i sneaked a couple tokes from a bowl during intermission. there where a fair amount of people smoking, and only about two security guards, i though i was under the radar for sure. anyways dude follows me up the stairs afterwords an taps me on the shoulder telling me to follow into the corner and that im not in trouble. Here is where it gets interesting, he tells me he saw me puff and that he could arrest me but he said he wasnt there for that. He said he was given the task of finding 12 people and bringing them back to the station to test their eyes to see if they are on any other drugs. I freaked out, i was tripping pretty good also and this was the last sort of thing i needed. I pleaded with the guy to just let me leave, i gave him my bowl and my little nug. Now here is the only good part, he let me go! Now it may not have been a "good thing" to miss that second set. But i dont have a freaking court date and that is what really matters. Just thought i would let you know that there are actual undercover cops in the crowd. I didnt know that this sort of thing happened. Never heard of a undercover in a small show like this. Hampton Beaches main source of income seems to arresting people. Cant even say i wont come back because it really is my favorite place to dance. But i absolutely will not puff there ever again. Im really pissed i missed that set. I really loved mattson, he blew me away with that BirdSong. Really wanted that St. Stephen, hey if you guys read this play it again at mountain jam! see yah there. tbones
that is the truth, barraco and jeff were asked in an interview what phil told them he wanted musically from them...there answer was that he didn't tell them what he wanted ,he told them what he didn't want and that was he didn't want them to sound like the grateful dead..also word is that barraco was asked to leave because he sounded too much like a grateful dead keyboardist...how lame!!!! [/ What ever the case may be ,our gain . Back from angels camp, I have a perspective to add to the mix. On a good day I see the negativity towards Phil as a way to support DSO. However, I see my friends from DSO supporting their favorite band by posting "stories" to prove a point that Phil is a bad person. I could spend my time trying to argue with the determined but in the end I know that you cant be someone your not. My thought is that to support DSO on a broad level we should drop the BS and focus on good things. This message board is damaging to DSO. Most will disagree with me and take offense but going to Angels camp for the weekend and experiencing the Grateful Dead again in its purity got me thinking about all the things posted on here and It made me sad and distracted. My loss.

Yes, it's true. My wife and I were hanging on the soundboard rail, and I began talking with a security woman. I was kinda harassing her for participating in the "round up" of smokers. The big lug/no neck security guy was chomping at the bit to get people, and they all would gather in a group, pointing at the floor, and talking on their walkies. Then the big lug would proceed out to the floor, I suppose to "get" someone. When I said to the security girl "why are you guys SO HARD UP to get people smoking pot", she indicated that the State Police sent in 6 undercover, and they (Casino security) had to make sure they were following proper procedure. It just makes no economic sense to spend money that way. You know this is a "detail" for most of them, which means they're making good overtime $. Next time I'm there, I'll have no problem asking if the undercovers are there that night. Can't hurt to ask!! As far as the shows both being electives, BRING IT ON!!! Nuff said. Later... Jeff's voice was torn up so we wanted to take it easy on him because we still had a week of tour left. 80 % of the time when we play multiple shows at a venue there will be one re-creation and one elective. As for Phil firing me because I play too much like a dead keyboardist--nonsense.(no puns intended)

Your rendition of hey pocky way was scorching!! Your really are the ultimate hybrid of everything great about dead keys, honestly i think you might be better then any of the deads keyboard players. You always keep me dancin' , keep on shining.

I would have never thought to ask, like i said i have never heard of undercover cops in a club. Its especially creepy that they where there to scan peoples eyes that they determined may be using drugs. that is so invasive, those piglets need to read the constitution. Hey DSO play Boston more!!! they just re-opened the roxy (now the royal) and we have a new HOB. Plus its decriminalized. Fuck the Hampton Beach Police. You guys should seriously look into the lowell concert in the park series, that place is the best outdoor venue around here. ratdog played there a few times. Super nice park on the river, in the middle of the city. perfect size for you guys too, book it next year you wont regret it.

Guest Lisacat
why I love the casino- it is the perfect dance floor- my opinion of venues is based on the dance-ability of the floor- the feng shui, what the actual floor is constructed of, the amount of space around the stage etc.... Hampton is a nice wide venue which allows for lots of room on either side of the stage, the floor is not concrete, the stage is low enough so you don't feel like your neck is going to fall of by the end of the night if you want to watch the stage, there is easy in and out to take a break, etc. All of the venues which have been my favorites have similar qualities- Hilton AC, Henry Fonda, a couple places the band as only played once- lancaster, and Hilton Head. Crystal Ballroom would be great except they divide the floor for the under 21/over 21 which makes it difficult, same with e-factory (although that floor does not have much give to it). As far as the cops go- I wouldn't have even noticed it unless people pointed it out to me....I think if you behave yourself they leave you alone. I had a much more difficult time at the Mighty High trying to dance on mulch and gravel.
Forum MVP jfolks Posted June 10, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 10, 2010 this undercover incident reminds me of the last NYC Governor's Island show.. there were like 20+ uniformed NYC cops, and they watched and allowed people to peacefully toke.. hell, the chief/top-cop even sang along to eyes of the world!
