goganious
Okay, Let me start off by saying that I realize that Deadheads and "famous grilled cheese" go together like, well...deadheads and grilled cheese. However, there is one "famous grilled cheese" stand that beats all the rest, in my humble opinion. Are any of you familiar with Mark's famous grilled cheese? He is often set up right on the main path as you head from the "war zone" to the main beach area. He's an older looking gentleman (maybe in his 50s?) with kind eyes and a big smile. At any rate, its not his sandwiches alone that make him worth a visit. They are delicious, and spiced just perfectly and priced reasonably as well. Its Mark HIMSELF, though, that makes his stand worth stopping by. He's just the kindest, nicest, LEAST crusty/creepy/space-case/wooked out guy you could imagine. 2 years ago, at the Ledges, I was just sitting at my campsite when my 2 friends came up to me and said "You have to meet our new friend Mark!". I was a bit leary, as I tend to be when my 2 attractive female friends over whom I'm quite protective make "new friends". However, upon meeting Mark, I saw that I had absolutely nothing to worry about. He kept talking about how he believes in paying it forward and about how you have to spread the love. His way of doing this was to make endless grilled cheeses for the entire weekend and give them away for free to anyone who asked. While he DID accept money for teh sandwiches, he would also happily feed anyone that stopped by for free. We asked him how he could afforde to buy all that bread and cheese and whatnot. He said that he must have built up some good karma or something, because a friend had convinced him to go to a casino, and he reluctantly did. Upon pulling the lever on the slot machine, he instantly won a large jackpot which fuynded all his Summer travels. He then promptly quit playing. This wide-eyed, loving fellow just kept talking about How he just loved everyone and was so fortunate to be able to share the music and the food and the friendship. Just a truly, truly kind and loving person with no ulterio motives that I could detect. Long story long: If you happen to see Mark (he's got a greyish beard, short grey hair, he's about 5 foot 10, and he's always making grilled cheese sandwiches), stop by his stand, grab a sandwich, and have a chat with him. You won't regret it. Mark the Grilled Cheese guy: Just one more reason I'm excited to go to G-Fest this year.

Forum MVP jfolks Posted June 11, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 11, 2010 Sounds like a really cool guy! but this thread reminds me of the best lot vendor EVER (okay, 2nd best.. but disc-o pizza is in a league of its own.. literally "the best fuckin pizza" in the world).. has anyone ever had "Frank's Mom's Pasta?" I used to see him at large fests (like bonnaroo and wakarusa) back around 04-05.. his name wasnt even frank.. he had a grey beard (i know, that helps a lot, right.. lol).. but this pasta is freaking AMAZING (like on par with disc-o, this pasta could be sold in a good restaurant) . it was 2 bucks for a heaping plate that you had trouble finishing. it was a vegetarian pasta with a homemade red sauce, and he sauteed the noodles with the sauce.. but he also sold the best grilled cheese ive ever had in my life. white cheese and a special garlic infused butter make it the best grilled cheese ever. and the sammich was only a buck! anybody know who im talkin about? Forum MVP Tom Banjo Posted June 12, 2010 Forum MVP Report Share Posted June 12, 2010 Mike, You need to come to the ledges. Get an rv if you can't really camp. I really hope camp kitchen shows up. We should start a fund to raise money if there not. I have the first 100. I never met Mark so I can't attest to his existence. If goganious will meet me at gfest, I can meet Mark. Mike. I will forever respect you for the way you have owned up to the title husband. I'm sure I will see you before hand. Maybe next year. Try not to call out those more active than you. You've paid your due and opinion will always be respected, but you could discourage new comers from becoming old friends by challenging them. Take care of patty both you n your family will always be included in my daily thoughts. You are a good friend.

goganious
As Comesatime pointed out, over 174 views and no replies substantiating my claim. Perhaps Mark was a "one time thing" and not a G-fest regular. Either that, or something I partook in (over and over again) that weekend gave me the erronious belief that all the festival food I was eating was much tastier than it was in reality. At any rate, I'll be on the lookout for Mark again this year. If he isn't around, though, I always have Disco Pizza to fall back on. See you all at the ledges!
