Heck yeah! I've really taken a shining to the Boston show, my man and I were just talking about these shows last night, but we didn't realize today was the beginning of the anniversary of those shows! Thanks for making it easier to pick what show to listen to today!!! (sometimes it's hard to pick which one to put on, you know!?!)

I never got to see the Grateful Dead (the curse of boring parents and being too young! lol) but the stories I've heard on lot about these three shows are some of the best! Like how so many people didn't go to Barton Hall because of the weather and other things, only to have their friends that did go tell them how epic it was and whatnot. Ah, for a band to be born out of the folklore of American music and what it is to BE American, only to have their fans pass their own folklore down those of us who really don't care about much else :) Since I wasn't even alive when these shows occurred, it means SO MUCH that I get to hear stories from the people who were there, sounds like it really was magical :)

Love purely,

Mrs Deviled Egg

What might the arguments be if one took the "different cities" out of the equation?

For starters:

10/18, 19, 20/74 Winterland

11/9, 10, 11/73 Winterland

11/30, 12/1, 2/73 Boston

5/24, 25, 26/72 London

4/27, 28, 29/71 Fillmore East (with 4/26 thrown in for good measure)

2/29, 3/1, 2/69 Fillmore West

Not too shabby a list, but I suspect the May '77 Super Trio would still get loads of votes.

I am glad to see someone put the 78 college tour up there. I think that this whole spring 78 tour is hidden behind the glow of 77 and the fact that the set lists are kind of standard. But putting that aside, the energy and quality is off the hook. All of Duke, the William and Mary Half Step and so much more. Getting past Boston, Barton, buffalo, I would second the Duke, VT and W&M.

Actually 11/4, 5, 6/77 not only falls within the original parameters but makes the "argument" not trivial.

Yes, that is one of the three packs that falls under the parameters and one that gets thrown into the argument.

Has to be consecutive days (no off days) and it has to be different venues. You can do two packs as well and it's usually Boston>Cornell or Cornell>Buffalo vying for the top spot, but the competition is much more savage. You can also do the two pack thing for specific years...like in 1985 for example, it would CLEARLY be 6/27 and 6/28.

Unfortunately, 85 was the last year you can play this, but when you get into JGB it's a whole new ball game.

And that Fillmore run John (2/ 27,28 and 3/ 1,2 /69) probably gets the vote for best 4 pack of all time--in fact me thinks it would most likely garner enough votes for the best GD run of all time (if ever brought to the floor) no matter the parameters!

So, so sorry Fillmore East '71.

The upstate NY spring and fall three packs were very different despite similar songs being played...Jerry had the wolf back, which to use a sandpaper analogy regarding tone...spring run was 300 grit(finer...less gritty) and fall run was 100 grit...way more bite coming off the stage in terms of Garcia. Spring run for me was fresh and light with 76 cleanliness infused...vocals were spot on for the most part... by the time the fall rolled around the band in general felt looser and willing to take more chances and thus when it was on it was wild and crazy...more peaks and valleys if you will...racous is a term I visit often when discussing fall 77 and on into 78 for that matter...Even though I was completely exhausted for the Sunday Binghampton show ...right from the get go with that 1/2 step opener.... Garcia fanning his ass off, I kissed any lethargy goodbye (along with other wonderful things kicking in)...and we were off to the races...anyway just thought I would chime in...BTW i talked to my bro in upstate NY and lo and behold a snowstorm hit on Mothers day... :)

Talk about savage, how about 5/10 & 5/11/72? (I'm a HUGE sucker for Rotterdam).

HelpSlip,

6/25/88 Hebron is sticking out like a sore thumb on that list. Unless there is a different Hebron '88 than the one I was at.

it does stick out compared to the rest, but wanted to include the only "different city/consecutive nights" of summer88 ...one of the hottest summer tours ever
