Forum MVP kdubfan Posted March 26, 2011 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 26, 2011 I'm sure everyone on here knows this song but it's always nice to sit down and read the lyrics. You might see somethig that you can't hear or look at it from a different side this time around. Enjoy. They're selling postcards of the hanging They're painting the passports brown The beauty parlor is filled with sailors The circus is in town Here comes the blind commissioner They've got him in a trance One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker The other is in his pants And the riot squad they're restless They need somewhere to go As Lady and I look out tonight From Desolation Row. Cinderella, she seems so easy "It takes one to know one," she smiles And puts her hands in her back pockets Bette Davis style And in comes Romeo, he's moaning "You belong to Me I Believe" And someone says, "You're in the wrong place, my friend You better leave" And the only sound that's left After the ambulances go Is Cinderella sweeping up On Desolation Row. Now the moon is almost hidden The stars are beginning to hide The fortunetelling lady Has even taken all her things inside All except for Cain and Abel And the hunchback of Notre Dame Everybody is making love Or else expecting rain And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing He's getting ready for the show He's going to the carnival tonight On Desolation Row. Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window For her I feel so afraid On her twenty-second birthday She already is an old maid To her, death is quite romantic She wears an iron vest Her profession's her religion Her sin is her lifelessness And though her eyes are fixed upon Noah's great rainbow She spends her time peeking Into Desolation Row. Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood With his memories in a trunk Passed this way an hour ago With his friend, a jealous monk He looked so immaculately frightful As he bummed a cigarette Then he went off sniffing drainpipes And reciting the alphabet You would not think to look at him But he was famous long ago For playing the electric violin On Desolation Row. Dr. Filth, he keeps his world Inside of a leather cup But all his sexless patients They're trying to blow it up Now his nurse, some local loser She's in charge of the cyanide hole And she also keeps the cards that read "Have Mercy on His Soul" They all play on penny whistles You can hear them blow If you lean your head out far enough From Desolation Row. Across the street they've nailed the curtains They're getting ready for the feast The Phantom of the Opera In a perfect image of a priest They're spoonfeeding Casanova To get him to feel more assured Then they'll kill him with self-confidence After poisoning him with words And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls "Get outa here if you don't know" Casanova is just being punished for going To Desolation Row. At midnight all the agents And the superhuman crew Come out and round up everyone That knows more than they do Then they bring them to the factory Where the heart-attack machine Is strapped across their shoulders And then the kerosene Is brought down from the castles By insurance men who go Check to see that nobody is escaping To Desolation Row. Praise be to Nero's Neptune The Titanic sails at dawn Everybody's shouting "Which side are you on ?" And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot Fighting in the captain's tower While calypso singers laugh at them And fishermen hold flowers Between the windows of the sea Where lovely mermaids flow And nobody has to think too much About Desolation Row. Yes, I received your letter yesterday About the time the door knob broke When you asked me how I was doing Was that some kind of joke ? All these people that you mention Yes, I know them, they're quite lame I had to rearrange their faces And give them all another name Right now I can't read too good Dont send me no more letters no Not unless you mail them From Desolation Row. Forum MVP kdubfan Posted March 27, 2011 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 27, 2011 This song just goes to prove the genus of Bob's song writing skills. The lyrics don't have to be long to be sweet. Though this is a very short song I feel it's perfect. Not one note or word needs to be added to this beautiful song. Simply perfect. Close your eyes, close your door You don't have to worry any more I'll be your baby tonight. Shut the light, shut the shade You don't have to be afraid I'll be your baby tonight. Well, that mockingbird's gonna sail away We're gonna forget it That big, fat moon is gonna shine like a spoon But we're gonna let it You won't regret it. Kick your shoes off, do not fear Bring that bottle over here I'll be your baby tonight.
Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted March 28, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 28, 2011 This one doesn't get as much play as some of the others, but between Dylan and the Byrds there are some nice versions of it. And the performance of it on the TV special celebrating his 30th anniversary of something or other was really fun... Clouds so swift Rain won't lift Gate won't close Railings froze Get your mind off wintertime You ain't goin' nowhere Whoo-ee ride me high Tomorrow's the day My bride's gonna come Oh, oh, are we gonna fly Down in the easy chair! I don't care How many letters they sent Morning came and morning went Pick up your money And pack up your tent You ain't goin' nowhere Whoo-ee ride me high Tomorrow's the day My bride's gonna come Oh, oh, are we gonna fly Down in the easy chair! Buy me a flute And a gun that shoots Tailgates some substitutes Strap yourself To the tree with roots You ain't goin' nowhere Whoo-ee ride me high Tomorrow's the day My bride's gonna come Oh, oh, are we gonna fly Down in the easy chair! Genghis Khan He could not keep All his kings Supplied with sleep We'll climb that hill no matter how steep When we come up to it Whoo-ee ride me high Tomorrow's the day My bride's gonna come Oh, oh, are we gonna fly Down in the easy chair! Forum MVP kdubfan Posted March 30, 2011 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted March 30, 2011 I cranked up Pandora this morning and had a good laugh over this... I SHALL BE FREE Well, it took me a woman late last night I's three-fourths drunk she looked all right 'Til she started peelin' off her onion gook She took off her wig, said, how do I look I's high flyin', bare naked out the window Well, sometimes I might get drunk Walk like a duck and smell like a skunk Don't hurt me none, don't hurt my pride 'Cause I got my little lady right by my side She's a tryin' a hide pretendin' she don't know me I's out there paintin' on the old wood shed When a can a black paint it fell on my head I went down to scrub and rub But I had to sit in back off the tub, cost a quarter, half price Well, my telephone rang it would not stop It's President Kennedy callin' me up He said,"My friend, Bob, what do we need To make the country grow?" Forum MVP kdubfan Posted May 24, 2011 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 24, 2011 Isis I married Isis on the fifth day of May But I could not hold on to her very long So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong. I came to a high place of darkness and light The dividing line ran through the center of town I hitched up my pony to a post on the right Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down. A man in the corner approached me for a match I knew right away he was not ordinary He said "Are you looking for something easy to catch ?" I said "I got no money". He said "That ain't necessary". We set out that night for the cold in the North I gave him my blanket he gave me his word I said "Where are we going ?" He said "We'd be back by the fourth" I said "That's the best new that I've ever heard". I was thinking about turquoise I was thinking about gold I was thinking about diamonds and the world's biggest necklace As we rode through the canyons through the devilish cold I was thinking about Isis how she thought I was so reckless. How she told me that one day we meet up again And things would be different the next time we wed If I only could hang on and just be her friend I still can't remember all the best things she said. We came to the pyramids all embedded in ice He said "There's a body I'm trying to find If I carry it out it'll bring a good prize" It was then that I knew what he had on his mind. The wind it was howling and the snow was outrageous We chopped through the night and we chopped through the dawn When he died I was hoping that it wasn't contagious But I made up my mind that I had to go on. I broke into the tomb but the casket was empty There was no jewels no nothing I felt I'd been had When I saw that my partner was just being friendly When I took up his offer I must-a been mad. I picked up his body and I dragged him inside Threw him down in the hole and I put back the cover I said a quick prayer and I felt satisfied Then I rode back to find Isis just to tell her I love her. She was there in the meadow where the creek used to rise Blinded by sleep and in need of a bed I came in from the East with the sun in my eyes I cursed her one time then I rode on ahead. She said "Where ya been ?" I said "No place special ?" She said "You look different" I said "Well I guess" She said "You been gone" I said "That's only natural" She said "You gonna stay ?" I said "If you want me to, Yeah ". Isis oh Isis you mystical child What drives me to you is what drives me insane I still can remember the way that you smiled On the fifth day of May in the drizzling rain. Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted May 24, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 24, 2011 One of his shorter offerings, and brilliant (aren't they all): Mama, take this badge off of me I can't use it anymore. Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door Mama, put my guns in the ground I can't shoot them anymore. Forum MVP gr8fulpair Posted May 25, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 25, 2011 The agony of this song grips me every time I hear it - particularly with the way Bob sings it. Forum MVP kdubfan Posted May 28, 2011 Author Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 28, 2011 I have been playing Dylan extra heavy this week due to him turning 70. I have to say it don't get any more iconic than Bob! He has to be the most famous and influential musician/songwriter of all time. We are all very blessed to have him with us today. Get out and see him while you still can. :)
Forum MVP FunkyBass13 Posted May 28, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted May 28, 2011 Don't Think Twice Its Alright This song was first on the 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. This song touches me deeply. I had a very close friend take his own life almost 5 years ago and I can't help but to think of him everytime I listen to or play this song. It was always one of his favs and we use to play this together a lot. I have found myself thinking about him a bunch over the last couple months. Ryan I love and miss you brother. Forum MVP chuckvegas Posted July 29, 2011 Forum MVP Report Share Posted July 29, 2011 This thread is worth a bump, and here are a couple of prime lines from another work that is always and forever in my soundtrack: Though you might hear laughin', spinnin' swingin' madly across the sun It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run And but for the sky there are no fences facin' And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're Seein' that he's chasing. Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to Hey ! Mr Tambourine Man, play a song for me In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you. Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves Let me forget about today until tomorrow. Forum MVP Tea Posted January 12, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 12, 2012 One of my personal favorites..... Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press Whoever it is I wish they'd cut it out quick but when they will I can only guess They say I shot a man named Gray and took his wife to Italy She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me I can't help it if I'm lucky. People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts Even you yesterday you had to ask me where it was at I couldn't believe after all these years you didn't know even me better than that Sweet lady. Idiot wind blowing every time your move your mouth Blowing down the backroads heading south Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth You're an idiot babe It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe I ran into the fortune-teller who said beware of lightning that might strike I haven't known peace and quit for so long I can't remember what it's like There's a lone soldier on the cross smoke pouring out of a boxcar door You didn't know it you didn't think it could be done in the final end he won the wars After losing every battle. I woke up on the roadside daydreaming about the way things sometimes are Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are making me see stars You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes Blood on your saddle. Idiot wind blowing through the flowers on your tomb Blowing through the curtains in your room Idiot wind blowing every time you move your teeth You're an idiot babe It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe. It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped What's good is bad what's bad is good you'll find out when you reach the top You're on the bottom.I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed your eyes don't look into mine The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone faced while the building burned I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees while the springtime turned Slowly into autumn. Idiot wind blowing like a circle around my skull From the Grand Coulee Dam to Capitol Idiot wind blowing every time you move you teeth You're an idiot babe. It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe. I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishing I was somebody else instead Down the highway down the tracks down the road to ecstasy I followed you beneath the stars hounded by your memory And all you raging glory. I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me You'll never know the hurt I suffered not the pain I raise above And I'll never know the same about you your holiness or your kind of love And it makes me feel so sorry. Idiot wind blowing through the buttons of our coats Blowing through the letters that we wrote Idiot wind blowing through the dust upon our shelves We're idiots babe It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves. Forum MVP Tea Posted January 13, 2012 Forum MVP Report Share Posted January 13, 2012 This one has always been a favorite: Eat it I think Bob would love to try this out. While he's at it, why not: MMMBOP You have so many relationships in this life Only one or two will last You go through all this pain and strife Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast And they're gone so fast So hold on to the ones who really care In the end they'll be the only ones there When you get old and start losing your hair Can you tell me who will still care? Can you tell me who will still care? Chorus: Mmm bop, ba duba dop Ba du bop, ba duba dop Ba du bop, ba duba dop Ba du Mmm bop, ba duba dop Ba du bop, Ba du dop Ba du bop, Ba du dop Ba du Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose You can plant any one of those Keep planting to find out which one grows It's a secret no one knows It's a secret no one knows no one knows (Repeat Chorus) In an mmm bop they're gone. In an mmm bop they're not there. In an mmm bop they're gone. In an mmm bop they're not there. Until you lose your hair. But you don't care. (Repeat Chorus) Can you tell me? You say you can but you don't know. Can you tell me which flower's going to grow? Can you tell me if it's going to be a daisy or a rose? Can you tell me which flower's going to grow? Can you tell me?
